Well done, it's very clean. Impressive bow control. Your interpretation is different from others I've heard, but I like yours. Perhaps you could use a heavier accent between 7:44-7:49.
Beautiful Job Rachel! But I have to say.....it would sound better if it was a professional symphony that you're playing with...like the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. But you did a fantastic job!

Rachel's performance is simply the best. Better than Perlman, even. She has more rubato, and sostenuto when she feels it is warranted. Perlman's is too fast, and doesn't give the amount of "schmalz" that is required for this piece. She is also not afraid to attack the piece. Rachel is incredible...
I grew up with performing Liszt's "Hungarian Rhapsodies". My only guess is that Pablo Sarastre quoted the "friska" violin melody part of Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody no. 13 for solo piano right into his "friska" part of the Ziguenerweisen. That is why I adore the "Zigeunerweisen". And how about Rachel Barton Pine putting on her artistic pyrotechnics on the violin as usual! I guess this piece is the 11th hardest in the classical violin repertory!!!
this is one of the best Gypsy Airs i have ever heard. really like it ! Love the energy, the passions, the "singing" even at technical passage. I actually hear things that i did not hear before in this piece !!
Thanks for inspiration. I am going to work on it again and try some of things you did to it. Bravo !!!!
I absolutely love all of Rachel's interpretations. She came and performed with our youth orchestra, played this piece and the Thais Meditation by Massenet. Her playing almost brings me to tears, it was the greatest honor I've ever had.
i love this interpretation - she kinda uses adequate speed, not like sarah chang who just fastens up all the way to the end till even the notes are not straight any more...
although: why the hell is there such a big disagreement about 7:32 min between Rachel and the orchestra..??!
@handygangstazzz It's a slightly trickey place, but only slightly. The conductor doesn't seem to know the piece too terribly well; he has head buried in the score the whole time, and doesn't appear to be listening to the soloist at all. They're almost never together in the Allegro, and Ms. Pine is very precise, very rhythmical and very clear about her tempi and rubati. Maybe they had too few rehearsals.
This is the most flamboyant piece of the Zigeunerweisen (Gypsy Airs) there is. It is music transformed into firework of passion, virtuosity, and technical zenith.
Thank you Ms Barton, for making this concert for the public. It is most uplifting. Love and respect from Canada
I remain without voice. I love you for that, and a few other pieces too. Thank you very much, Madam. You are a talented artist and a very beautiful person.
dw, i agree, dont let the thumbs down get u down :D. I play at the con and all my instructors bag sarah chang to no end XD they also hate vanessa mae but meh, i kinda agree with them. Rachel is brilliant, she plays with passion and expression but her technique is brilliant... I wish the same could be said of the orchestra
Ms. Barton you are fantastic! I saw you last weekend in Santiago, Chile doing Bruch's Scottish Fantasia, and I could not stop my tears! we wwere moved and greateful to you for the encores you did especially the Heavy Metal, thank you!
Jackie DuPre on a violin! She is just fantastic. I can't wait till she plays in NY. I want to see and hear her. I was transported to heven on earth. Only Jussi Bjoerling moved me as much.
I decided not to use the mute for this particular concert because of the acoustics of the particular hall and orchestra. (Though I would always use a mute in the slow movement of Tchaikovsky, no matter what.) When doing solo performances, my mute of choice is a so-called "fake Tourte" (those soft rubber violin-shaped ones).
Yeah, the metal ones which slide up and down seem to inhibit tone on my violin even on the off position. Oh and I forgot to mention stunning performance :P When's Sibelius?
wow. very nice. love it. I hadn't seen a violinist sitting on a stool like this before, except Perlman. I want to listen to other performances and see how she compares. I wish the orchestra was more with her in some spots. 5:59 is cute.
Rachel had an accident several years back which severely damaged a leg and foot and I am sure she is much more comfortable sitting. People who are new to her may not be aware of why she usually sits when she plays. I am certainly no authority on her but she appears to not allow it to limit her as she travels all over the world--I think it may just be a "comfort" issue.
I come back again and again to hear how lovely..and I think certainly the soloist always has the option to dress with flair and expect them too..and it is a relief to not worry that the dress might drop below the "equater" during the performance. It is both appropriate and in good taste. The soloist always wears something special or at least this has been my experience in some 40 years of attending and playing in symphonies. That is part of the honor and they should get to shine.
Simply one of the greatest technical and artistic players on today's stage. Skilled musicians and enthusiasts should know that her intonation is almost always flawless. Combine that with great artistry--she needs to play with the best orchestras in the world.
Rachel must be a gypsy herself, and makes everyone who listens wish they were! When the listener feels the passion of the performer, and the composer, it's a performance well played. Bravo.
Absolutely right. The orchestra (even without the soloist is quite off). The conductor is to blame, mostly. This situation makes it very tough on the soloist. Nevertheless, bravissimo Rachel.
Thank you!! When you visited Ithaca a few months ago, I remember speaking with colleagues regarding your performance. One of the first things that came to mind after your Carmen Fantasy was, "I REALLY hope that she records Zigeunerweisen!" Congrats on another stellar live show! Now let's have some more METAL!
I think this is the best I've heard anyone play this piece. Thank you for that lovely playing. I was wondering though for the allegro molto vivace part with left hand pizz, i get every notes except for the c# with fourth finger pizz. Any tips?
I want to work on this peice next with my teacher, but I need to finish the rest of the bruch. Hopefully I'll be able to play it by then. :] Those left hand plucks look hard.
Interesting - that's the first time I've ever gotten that comment about this dress! Maybe it's an optical illusion because it's shiny. The top part is completely lace, so it's actually fantastically free to play in. Thanks for writing!
This is definitely the best interpretation of Sarasate ever! You may not know me, but we actually performed together in Valdosta, GA a few years ago. I'm sure it was one of the Paganini concertos that you were doing with us (VSO).
Anyway, this was amazing. You truly are God's gift to mankind!
Hi, everyone, thanks for watching my Zigeunerweisen video! Just a quick explanation about the orchestra - they are a volunteer ensemble, lovely people and very enthusiastic. Union rules for professional orchestras make it almost impossible to get permission to film and/or post video clips from their concerts, so my performance with the Highland Park Strings was a rare opportunity to have a performance with orchestra that I could share with all of you.
Excellent solo. Did the orchestra players get paid? If they did, they didn't deserve a penny of it. What a shame to spoil such a perfprmance with middle-school level of accompaniment.
I'd have to agree to a certain extent: The orchestra couldn't quite keep up with Barton, throughout, on the mood or timing (especially, in the Allegro) but an ensemble is only as good as the Conductor...this Lady is an absolute powerhouse on the violin, though! A joy to hear and to watch
I wouldn't critisize the orchestra so much. They are good players, and they just rushed a bit. It happens, and always hard to avoid :P I also heard Rachel rush a small small bit, but still I think that the performance is amazing and it's definately the best interpretation I've ever seen. Thank you Rachel...you really inspire me as a violinist myself, I only playing 1 year and 10 months and I am second chair first violin of my Jr High orchestra! :-)
You can really make the violin cry--your attack and approach takes you into a rapturous heaven!! Intonation was really great. I'll have to listen to this again. I've got a recording of you at age 19, I'll have to revisit that Sarasate performance too.
from 4:56 up to the Allegro molto vivace, intoxicating, exotic atmosphere. Violinists, no matter how "skilled" would just as soon be lucky to pull this off..... Rachel's execution and imagination working together, one urging the other forward.
Is this really a virtuoso video posted by the virtuoso himself???? Amazing, I'm a luthier, well, practician, or just a fan of Luthierie, and I loved your performance, never heard about you, but glad to find this in the Youtube, thanks a lot and keep posting
haha typical Barton...Amazing phrasing, great attack, to often this piece is played far to "lightly." And of course to top it all off for those of you watching, maybe your telling yourself this isn't played as well as the cd you have in your collection downstairs, but I challenge you to find a better live recording of this. Barton is the real deal, you wont hear many live performances better than this one right here.
Thanks for the all of the music Rachel. I remember seeing you at Orchestra Hall when I was in middle school. I'm 33 now! Your Allegro in C was just played on Wisconsin Public Radio yesterday. Kudos! Glad to see you're still doing well!
thiz would be one fo the zweetezt performance i've ever zeen.. and the way youh played zarazate iz not juzt magnificent.. it also containz emotionz.. bravo?!
Truly the best rendition of Zigeunerweisen I have ever heard...Once again you've taken one of my favorite pieces and made it even better like with the Devil's Trill. I could watch this performance over and over.
Incredible playing as always. I'd love to see your Erlkonig on here some day, and anything else for that matter. Are you on faculty anywhere as a teacher?
I'm on the road too much to maintain a studio, but I give master classes in almost every town I visit, and sometimes give supplemental lessons - thanks for asking!

3:09-3:13 has a nice contrast.
I'm most impressed by your left hand pizz. Or did you use nail pizz?
In my opinion, you're up there with the top players. Keep it up!

Amazing performance, she is simply astounding! However, I can't stand how the video keeps fading in and out of the two images, close-up and distant.
