Hank B. Marvin, Grandfather of all British Electric Guitar Heros, was playing the very first Fender Stratocaster imported from the U.S.A. back in 1959: Fiesta Red w/Maple neck. Not a shock to see George playing Hank's choice of axe/colour: most of the blossoming young British guitar players all looked up to Hank.
would u let someone play in your band who stole ur girl away from you, even if it was 17 years ago? I am not really sure if I would, but George did. Great mature attitude.
George is someone I aspire to be as a slide guitar player. Honestly. I started out by following jimmy page and the old delta blues men, then to jack white and many others but george has a special gift when it comes to slide guitar. He's so crisp and clean with it it blows my mind. How he got to be that clear with it is amazing. Such underrated guitar player.
I don't know, i like it better in the key of G, but this live version is just so kick ass..... with clapton, the hot backing vocalists, and some more kick ass sliding not on the album. IT'S SO HARD TO CHOOSE :'(
when George went beyond the Ganges, a BIG piece of my heart went with him. I miss you terribly George, You will live forever in my heart and record collection. I know you are in that chariot beside Krishna. I love you my brother.
yes! clapton and harrison are two of my favorites guitarists, nate east one of my fav bassists, this album one of my fav albums! its amazin. i didnt know there was a concert video, tho, howd you get a hold of it?
By this time I am sure we would be having The Beatles together. But you know who killed that dream and with it a great musician. Live forever John and George.
He's just about my favourite slide player. Maybe there's better out there somewhere but I don't know their names and I frankly don't care. He just had an incredibly expressive touch on the slide.
@kitty9tales Warner Bros. Company filmed the whole concert- but never released a complete video of it for no real reason- probably because George was so underrated they didnt think the video would sell- its sad.

@QueenBeatlesWings George and Clapton were lifelong best buds, even Patti Boyd didn't break them up! I agree with everything you say, I'd just add that the famous rockstars that played with George did it for love of George as well as the prestige of playing with him. Jeez, Dylan loved to hang with George, Roy Orbison was a friend from way back when the Beatles opened for him, Carl Perkins idolized him
I always liked this song but damn this live version is so funky. What a gem of a song. And Georges playing is just top notch. No-one sounded like him. His guitars made a sound of thier own.
@mege8524 very true... as a boy George would practice til his finger were bleeding... George pioneered the concept of a band having a " lead guitarist" , though his Beatles leads seem primitive by today's standards, george was there first showing the way .... he could play anything with strings.
"Ringo" fans.... In honor of Ringo's 70th, I hope U will check out my "RINGO"video. It's very retro with Beatleish touches & was done as a labor of love and with the utmost respect for the Fabs. My attempt at putting a little bit of the Beatle spirit out there for Beatle fans. It's also my tribute to George Harrison's slide playing as well as Ringo's unique style.
2 of the greatest guitarists working together as friends influencing eachother greatly- I'm glad Clapton is alive to kind of represent George's guitar skills today.
couldnt agree more fellas...he was a perfect dark horse in front of other 2 beatles...but came out real strongly with his albums/concert for Bangladesh
I have always loved George's style. I remember an interview where EC was talking about George's playing once where he referred to George's simplicity of style as "self imposed", that is, he deliberately looked to extract the most tone and style out of fewer strikes on the string, shunning many of those cliches. As a result of this, and his natural ear for tone and style, George's style is wonderfully distinctive, as soon as he starts playing you know who it is.
Well, perhaps George Harrison's guitar playing is underrated by those who DON'T play guitar. But for those of who do, his world music influences, taste, melody nd inventiveness provide the blueprint for eclectic playing. And there can be NO doubt that Harrison's slide guitar playing, ranging from supple, melodic, and haunting to snarling, snide, and stinging was, in the parlance of the day, DA SHEEYAT.
George is criminally underated. Before Eric,Jimmy,Jeff,Eddie there was George. He was playing a Strat long before the rest as early as 67. Clapton sounded like him on Wonderful tonight and even started to like him during the early 70s with the beard. George just happened to be in the best band ever and was overshadowed.
Well Eric and George were very good friends. And spending time with another musician some of there style is bound to rub off on you. Cream's "Badge" has the Harrison vibe at the end, and "Wonderful Tonight" has that same vibe. But "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" was Clapton on lead and the 3rd guitar in this song sounds like a Clapton strumming pattern. Either way both are great.
@iggyshwartz That is true mate. George was also not allowed to put much material out while IN the biggest band ever. But his genius soon came out :) lucky us :)
@iggyshwartz right, I agree, plus he was a wonderful composer that did mach up his former friends John and Paul. And he was a spiritual man all the way through and brought this quality on top into Pop music. I am sure, we going to him again arround some time later, to enrichen the world again. Just like John, too.
@musicmanregina - we have to remember as well that George's era was just before the heavy bends era . He had to contend with the unwound G string makeing it hard to bend. It wasn't until string manufactureres started producing unwound 3rd string the same as E and B that electric guitarists started bending notes all over the neck. George was every bit a pioneer to Clapton and Page as Chuck Berry was to the Beatles and the Stones.
@iggyshwartz well Eric made best album for guitarist - Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton, which was recorded in 1965 , so George wasn´t first famous guitarist but yeah Eric used strat in 1970 with Derek and Dominoes. Both are great
@iggyshwartz Harrison's first Stratocaster was used on Rubber Soul. It was a 1961 Blue strat. John asked Mal Evens to get 2 Strats, and returned with 2 Blue 1961 Strats. George used it first on Nowhere Man. George's Strat was used much more than John's, and can be seen in it's psychadelic painted glory during the All You Need Is Love broadcast and the video for I Am The Walrus in the Magical Mystery Tour movie.
@iggyshwartz I so agree - but he wasn't "overshadowed" so much as elbowed out of the spotlight by two colossal egos when he looked to be a competition; after all, he was already the best-looking and most intelligent
@chrstnlmllr51 Agreed, though I'd probably say that he and John were intellectual equals (both the most intelligent, though). George once said that John and Paul were so busy being John and Paul that they didn't even really notice he was there. I think that's probably true. They had carved up the Beatles empire for themselves, and didn't really seem interested in sharing much of it. Then George went and released All Things Must Pass RIGHT after the band broke up. :)
@iggyshwartz i agree 100%! plus george wasn't a natural showman, he always let others play lead when he toured, but the competetive nature between him and slow hands, made him show his skills on this 1!!
@iggyshwartz Underrated singer, lead guitarist, slide guitarist. It's a shame he didn't perform more often, but we got QUALITY rather than QUANTITY with George!
@LesPaulKLO speaking of under rated slide players ... how about Mike Campbell (tom petty) and Ron Wood (with the Faces) Joe Walsh (was taught slide by Duane Allman himself!)
I was struggling so much trying not to go back to Japan, I missed his concert......... never had a chance to see him ever. One of my favorite of favorite artist.
I love it when people compare great musicians. When one achieves the level that these two have I just enjoy - maybe take notice of different techniques. Speaking of great slide I just saw Derrick Trucks and Susan Tedeschi - WOW. Keep it real friends.
@crazynicktaxi obviously you have never hear of Warren Hayes.... tell ya what ill toss in some Derek Trucks with him.... .youtube.com/watch?v=whs5uJEIt6U juss toss in your own www
Clapton is good...I never said he wasn't. I've just never found anything interesting in his playing. Chet Atkins,Jerry Reed,James Burton and George Harrison are my favorites. AND; Watch who your calling a fool. You sound like some green tinhorn kid.
I think it's because so many people are Clapton copyists. That's just my opinion. Eric's playing on "John Mayall and the Bluebreakers W/Eric Clapton", "Fresh Cream", and "Disraeli Gears" is very unique and interesting. With the bluesbreakers album he invented the Marshall and Les Paul combo and the standard blues/rock guitar tone. And with Cream his guitars "woman tone" was so smooth and cutting it is amazing. Id put George up there with him anyday though. I love them both very much.
Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed, James Burton, and George Harrison are your favourites? HALLELUJAH!!!!!!!!! Finally, oh Lord, FINALLY someone lists some REAL guitar talent!!!!
"Chester and Lester": Atkins and Les Paul jamming on Duke Ellington, CHECK IT OUT!
Ah, but Harrison, underrated but beautifully transcendent slide guitarist and elegant journeyman who takes us from the metal of "Yer Blues" to the funk and soul of "Don't Let Me Down" to the Beck of "Old Brown Shoe." Good stuff!
Sure, it's an average song Chickcoop but are doubting all of Harrisons playing? If he was still alove im sure he's take you under the table especially when he pulled out the sitar.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
As a guitar player myself, I can tell you this video showed nothing special. He certainly is an adequate player but nothing that even remotely approaches great and he would tell you that himself.
A "guitar player yourself??" Listen chickcoop, I am a professional guitar player versed in numerous styles; for you not to recognize or even acknowledge Harrison's idiosyncratic, sophisticated bottleneck slide phrasings reflects more on your own "guitar playing" limitations--and lack of taste--than it does on Harrison's mastery.
Como amo a este hombre! para mi es y sera siempre el mejor guitarrista, hay muchos ke hacen solos muy rápidos y no digo ke no sean buenos, pero nadie tiene el sentimiento con ese instrumento tan bello, como mi georgie.
We can say he is a very good guitar player. He belong to the best music group. Behind Harrison is the best guitarrist ever. George said that. His very close friend and Husband in Law: Eric Clapton.
And Yencrook is an " average" musical illiterate, and consequently his views on guitar playing, uniformed by any knowledge, are, well, "indeed nothing special."
For some more unique slide playing, please check out some of my videos! Thanks for your support, subscribe and comment! <3

I love it when people compare great musicians. When one achieves the level that these two have I just enjoy - maybe take notice of different techniques. Speaking of great slide I just saw Derrick Trucks and Susan Tedeschi - WOW. Keep it real friends.

Not many people could compete with George's slide playing.
OtherBeatles 2 years ago 4
Well, in that sense, Eric was never one to try to steal the scene. Also, Clapton came first, all those years ago with the Yardbirds.

George is THE most under-rated guitar player ever!

There are a few clips on the DVD collection but none of the entire concert. I would love to see it also.

Creo que siempre en su estilo siguió la estela de los Beatles, es decir creativo, y siempre buscando nuevas aportaciones... so great!

Clapton is good...I never said he wasn't. I've just never found anything interesting in his playing. Chet Atkins,Jerry Reed,James Burton and George Harrison are my favorites. AND; Watch who your calling a fool. You sound like some green tinhorn kid.
DirtSeven 3 years ago 2
I think it's because so many people are Clapton copyists. That's just my opinion. Eric's playing on "John Mayall and the Bluebreakers W/Eric Clapton", "Fresh Cream", and "Disraeli Gears" is very unique and interesting. With the bluesbreakers album he invented the Marshall and Les Paul combo and the standard blues/rock guitar tone. And with Cream his guitars "woman tone" was so smooth and cutting it is amazing. Id put George up there with him anyday though. I love them both very much.

Dear Dirt Seven:
Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed, James Burton, and George Harrison are your favourites? HALLELUJAH!!!!!!!!! Finally, oh Lord, FINALLY someone lists some REAL guitar talent!!!!
"Chester and Lester": Atkins and Les Paul jamming on Duke Ellington, CHECK IT OUT!
Ah, but Harrison, underrated but beautifully transcendent slide guitarist and elegant journeyman who takes us from the metal of "Yer Blues" to the funk and soul of "Don't Let Me Down" to the Beck of "Old Brown Shoe." Good stuff!

what a babe!!
this song is so groovy! mmm
I love George!

Clapton is the most over-rated guitarist ever. Same thing over and over and never wrote anything that good. Harrison is twice the artist.
DirtSeven 3 years ago
Bloody fool!!!
Clapton was a great guitarist...
Guitar player is not same as composer..
Yes Eric was not a very good songwriter...
But a phenomenal guitar player...
You know how tough his solo on "Crossroads" the Cream song is?
How could you have a stupid opinon like this?

It's the songwriting that I like and will survive.

George certainly was not an "adequate" player. An adequate player could never be the lead guitarist of the most famous band on the planet.

Sure, it's an average song Chickcoop but are doubting all of Harrisons playing? If he was still alove im sure he's take you under the table especially when he pulled out the sitar.

As a guitar player myself, I can tell you this video showed nothing special. He certainly is an adequate player but nothing that even remotely approaches great and he would tell you that himself.

Do You know Mr. George Harrison ?
mokogintaz 3 years ago 2
A "guitar player yourself??" Listen chickcoop, I am a professional guitar player versed in numerous styles; for you not to recognize or even acknowledge Harrison's idiosyncratic, sophisticated bottleneck slide phrasings reflects more on your own "guitar playing" limitations--and lack of taste--than it does on Harrison's mastery.

Como amo a este hombre! para mi es y sera siempre el mejor guitarrista, hay muchos ke hacen solos muy rápidos y no digo ke no sean buenos, pero nadie tiene el sentimiento con ese instrumento tan bello, como mi georgie.

absolutely true, not only was he a great guitarist, but was so humble about it he barely showed it off

We can say he is a very good guitar player. He belong to the best music group. Behind Harrison is the best guitarrist ever. George said that. His very close friend and Husband in Law: Eric Clapton.

I am agree. Technically on average level but he was very good about musical ideas on his guitar.
timmhg 3 years ago
Everything he did on abbey road was awsome. He played for the music.
jimmypage773 3 years ago 4
And Yencrook is an " average" musical illiterate, and consequently his views on guitar playing, uniformed by any knowledge, are, well, "indeed nothing special."

hmm... I understand why you would say that, but he is not the best ever. I would say Hendrix is/was the best
willypete2171 3 years ago
Could be Willy but Clapton played all kind of music.
It's about personal perception. Hendrix was wonderful too.
Regards.
