  • There is really no need for me to do any tests.

My quad core CPU has a very small load on one of the four cores and latency is not an issue. I am able to run several soft synths as well as Guitar Rig four and session drummer 3 without latency problems.

  • @SlyOne571: Haha "Never test-drive a running system!" Great!

  • @RyuBlade1980 I would say that running multiple virtual synthesizers is an excellent test.

There is a great free application you can download called process explorer which will show great detail in regard to percentages of processor, memory and I.O. usage on any P.C. If you run this application while your recording program is running you can see where your weakest link in your system is. This will also show all applications running on the system and the percent of usage for each.

  • @SlyOne571: I understand. Really I do not want to put the device down. If it works for you, great! The thing is, you can't really tell how good or bad an interface is in the first days after installing it. And what you really do with several soft synths, guitar rig and session drummer is testing your CPU and not the interface. Again, I too think that there is no need to test drive it, because you seem to be experienced and you would recognize problems without specific tests if there where any.

  • I received my Tascam US-144MKII today. I installed the drivers and firmware upgrade and started laying down tracks. I really don't see any problems. I am recording using Sonar producer X1 which is Cakewalk's latest release. I am running the software on Win7 64bit on a Dell laptop, IC5 processor, 4GB ram. The firmware and drivers I am using just came out in June of this year.

I suspect drivers as the source problems. You could also try different recording software. Audacity is free and works.

  • @SlyOne571: Great! I'm happy that it works for you. Have you tried the two tests I suggested?

  • It is a shame to see anyone who would like recording give it up.

I have had years of digital recording joy.

Perhaps you need some computer help.

If you live in the U.S. you can send me a phone number and I will help you out.

    I am a computer engineer. mglenn@cs-kc.com

  • @SlyOne571: Wow, that is very nice of you! Thanks a lot! ^^ Well, with the M-Audio Audiophile, I do have a working system now. No problems. I just don't have any motivation anymore. Perhaps in a few months I'll start again. Still, I'd be very interested in your experiences with the Tascam interface. Have a nice week!

  • I have a US144-MKII on the way for testing.

I will let you know what I experience with it in a few days.

  • @SlyOne571: I look forward to that! You probably won't encounter this problem, though I'm not the only one in the wide reaches of the internet who has it. If you want to test drive it seriously, you should do two things:

    1. Check the CPU load! Because if you set the buffer size to very small, then the cpu load will go up to about 10% even if absolutely no software is active, just because the interface is plugged in. If you unplug the interface it will go down to 0-1%.

  • @RyuBlade1980:

    2. Measure the real latency by connecting an output with an input and a latency checker software and compare it to the latency value that the driver reports. When you use a buffer size of 256, the values should differ extremely.

  • What software DAW are you using?

I will be using Sonar producer X1 and , Sonar Producer 8.5

I also hope you know there is a firmware flash and new drivers released June 2011

  • @SlyOne571: Cubase LE 5, came with the Tascam. But to see if Cubase caused the trouble, I installed Reaper and had the same problems. Thanks for the hint with the new drivers and firmware, but I have abandoned recording completely. I had a long time of frustration with my Toneport and the tascam because of an IRQ sharing problem. When I fixed that after months of horror, I encountered the problem in this video. I then installed an M-Audio Audiophile and have no problems at all...

  • @SlyOne571: But the time of troubles with the Toneport and the Tascam had made me age quickly, I lost all interest in recording, my good looks and even my sex drive. I'm not looking back and just wish I had never started home recording at all.

  • Your problem has nothing to do with your 144MKII.

Check your audio recording settings in windows.

I am sure that you will need to mute "stereo mix" in your windows input settings.

    I hope this helps.

  • @SlyOne571: Dear SlyOne571, thanks for your comment! Your suggestion is importand because yeah in 90% of the cases, this probably helps. But I am 100% sure that in this case, it has nothing to do with the settings. The Tascam US 144mkII doesn't allow routing of the stereo mix anywhere. This means, even if you wanted to route the stereomix to the inputs, this interface would not be able to. In the windows settings it is evident cause everything is greyed out. You have no options of muting...

  • @RyuBlade1980: ...or allowing the stereomix to go anywhere. And the thing is: If it WAS a routing problem, then the unwanted recorded stereomix would be much louder in the mix. I appreciate your comment because like you say, it often is just a matter of the windows settings but not in my case. Greetings

  • Does the TASCAM US-144MKII works great so far ?

    i want to buy a interface to replace my line6 ux1 ..

    how do you feel ?

  • @neo69hk: Hi Neo, thank you for the question. To be honest, I finally quit struggling with my tascam US144mkII. I just didn't have the energy nor time to fight with it anymore. So I really can't recommend it to you. If you search the internet you will find many disappointed users. Right now I have an M-Audio Audiophile in my Pc and I encountered no problem so far. But to be honest once again, I was so frustrated with the Tascam that I lost all motivation to record music.

  • what microphone do you have?

  • @ninetysixGroup ^^ Well, I have a Beyerdynamic TGX58 dynamic microphone, but this recording was done completely without ANY microphones.

  • @ninetysixGroup Okay man thanks ;)

  • I hope you figured out what was the problem.

Dude, can I ask you tow thing, please ?

It has two line-in input and two mic input, right?

Does it mean you can record 4 things simultaneously in 4 separte channels?

if not, than how many things can you records simultaneously in separate channels.

Another of my concern is that I use a lot of "ping pong" stereo effects on my guitar while I sing. Would I be able to record my guitar in stereo while I record the voice?

In short,is the guitar chanel stereo?

  • @sgtpeppersplanet Thank you for your question. I'll write a private message. ^^

  • Oh, and thanks to everyone who helped me with interface problems. Special thanks to pico, ars ultima and 4feetsmaller. additional thanks to laguna and mavy.
