God, I used to love him in person. He played a small club in Studio City in the seventies and I saw him every night. He was so hilarious and inventive, you never knew who he would do on a moment's notice. In the middle of Carol Channing he would suddenly turn his wig around and go into a flawless Dinah Shore. What a great, comic talent he was. RIP Craig.
The funny thing about this is that the late Craig Russell was imitating a woman--Mae West-- who was imitating a drag queen! LOL. Mae West after learned how to act with all of her exaggerated feminine gestures from her drag queen friends.
We put on a GLBT film festival at filmschool, in North Carolina, and this was one of our biggest shows! Saw this film as a kid and fell in love with it! Craig Russell and Hollis McLaren were amazing!
Sadly, Craig passed away! He had a talent of drag queen for many different roles! I watched this "Outrageous" few times...very funny and some dramatic! Craig dressed up as Mae West looked the same, wow...he fixed it up that real good job! Bless Craig!
To me, the Amsterdam show is one of the most fantastic pieces of entertainment i ever saw. It has it all...humor, sharpness, depth, beautiful costumes, an amazing voice. It's really such a shame that he isn't with us anymore. Such a talent! One in a lifetime. Thank you Craig!
One of great talents of my generation, used to see him sometimes at The Quest on Yonge St. always took the time to say hello and chat with everyone..and he was playing concert halls all over the world ! A class act all the way. Much missed.
he's out-mae-westing mae west.
