God, I can relate to this! I spent four years working at a supermarket and I honestly couldn't count the amount of customers who have been so awful to me. It's even worse when the problem blatently isn't your fault. I got so fed up with all the crap I recieved, I just started telling people, "look, I just fill the shelves, okay?"
However, I recently transferred onto nights and there are barely any customers - 80% of the stress my job caused me just lifted away!
What's infuriating is that the rude customers you deal with KNOW that they're rude, and they KNOW that the people they're being rude to are human beings. Do they care? No. They just tell you that if you don't like it, you shouldn't have gotten a job as X kind of worker in the first place.
If it was so easy to get a job wherein you didn't have to deal with rude people, there wouldn't be anybody left to work in retail.
Oh my god! Soooo true!! you've totally hit the nail on the head with this vlog. I've had a part time job as a sales assistant for about 3 1/2 years now and it's actually scary the amount of times i've longed to punch a customer in the face!
Hahaha that bit about people on the phone is so true! its really annoying. And the bit about customers shouting makes us stop wanting to help them, we will dig our heels in deeper just to make sure they dont get their own way. Im a sales assistant and like you said for the most part customers are nice, but when I go home I don't mention them I mention all the twats. Cant wait til my last day of work and god help my last rude customer
I can relate to this already and I've only just started my job. I work in a Monsoon and the vast majority of the customers are lovely, but there is the occasional one who gets huffy over absolutely nothing and won't even tell me what the problem is. It's like they're too rich to have manners. Blergh.
After working in retail for nearly 3 years now I have had quite a miserable time, I've had 2 customers soils themselves infront of me, I had a customer tell me I should not be on the till if I don't know what I'm doing, he was my first customer on my first day. One lady called me "boy" despite my very visible name tag, I then also had a man stand by my till telling people to go two stores down the road to get their ice creams for 10p less and that's only the tip of the iceberg.
Oh man. I work at a supermarket at the check-out. I'm also working on a video about... why customers suck, basically. So this is amazing! I'll post mine as a video response :)
I absolutely agree with your rant about when customers give you a credit card and there are insufficient funds. WHY DO THEY ASK TO TRY AGAIN? Yeah buddy, maybe money will magically appear this time. I also hate customers who scream at their kids while I'm serving them. It is just the most uncomfortable thing ever.
I completely agree my mum used to work as a sales advisor and a few times she would come home and complain about them. Whenever I see somebody like thinking they know it all and saying stuff to sales advisors I do actually say something cause I don't like people mistreating others especially when they are trying to do a job.
Also do you mind if I mentioned you in a vlog because you really do speak about points which I find interesting and many others would too. :-D

so true - but your tone seems way too nice and upbeat... give it more time, retail will make you even more jaded

@carlmander Just use the line from Confessions of a Shopaholic when they ask to reswipe their credit cards:
Salesperson: "Your card's been declined"
Customer: "Can you try again?"
Salesperson:*swipes just for the sake of it* "REALLY declined" :P
