It takes a lot longer to walk a mile than drive a mile. Perhaps it would be better to use time rather than miles. You can do much more in 20 mins as oppose to 1 min.
if you have a bias against alcohol, keep it to yourself. you aren't changing minds posting material that is so narrow. humans haven't been using alcohol for thousands of years just to stop for some sad sack that comes on here and belittles it. alcohol in its entirety > you and i don't doubt that its here to stay for good. deal with it.

And thus drunkeness is still only a social or moral problem of the individual- there exists no jurisdiction for govt to get involved anywhere here. You wanna "protect" individuals, than do urself & everyone else a favor and worry only about liberties. The moment u start caring only about the liberties of each individual instead of some sanctimonious ludicrous notions like 'war on drugs' or 'war on alcohol',etc
IFartOnFatKids, it's legal to drive high?? Really?? That's about the dumbest thing I heard/read recently. Let's start with the simple fact that it's illegal to be high, regardless of whether or not you're even driving.
And sobriety tests don't define the law, they're just an enforcement device.
Driving high may be less dangerous than driving drunk (according to some research; obviously it's still more dangerous than driving sober) but that doesn't make it more legal.
They should have mentioned that it takes far longer to walk a mile drunk than it does to drive a mile drunk. I'm not sure if the per hour statistic is much more useful though because what you really want to calculate is the risk of gettig home alive and it's ths same distance whether you walk or drive.
its got to be almost impossible to be drunk enough to lose inhibition to do terrible things yet sober enough to overpower a person on the street, one punch one kick is all it takes to stop them. Of course there are plenty of people assaulted while drunk because their easily overpowered
Personally, I think people who drink and drive either don't think they're drunk or don't care.
Also, I don't think people really care about walking drunk because the only person who will get hurt is the person walking. *Unless they're hit by a car, then whoever is driving has to pay*
cars r bad and full of toxins anyways. sleepy truckers on speed&soda. the risk is great always on the road. were tearing da earth up. drunks just laugh and eat. wine tastes good sometimes. just slow down so you can see. smoke med mary jane and eat carrots. be safe on the road america. don't wander, just wonder and walk straight.
I don't think people are considering the penalties when they choose to drink and drive. The reason is the low probability of getting caught. The rational calculus is to take the risk and DUI. The only way to increase detection is to violate civil liberties via some kind of police state surveillance. This is why it is not worth it.
I'd rather be unsafe and free than safe and live in a police state.
I'll take my chances with the drunk drivers, thank you very much.
a enforcement of existing rules is not a police state, just have a few more cops looking for bad drivers, stop them and charge them for bad driving drunk or not.
in guelph they cancelled bus servises at night because of drunk passengers imagine the deaths as a result, who in their right mind would pay for a taxi every time they went out and got drunk.
Putting substances in your body that alter your mind in terms of decision making and reaction time make the entire world more dangerous to you. You become less like a human and more like a dog, or cat. And yeah, they get hit by cars.
I have never heard of anyone die while walking or driving on either of those drugs.
Oh and its LEGAL to drive high.
If you can pass a sobriety test you can drive high ( its almost impossible to fail a sobriety test while your high, unless your a fuck up like yourself).
So please, next time you decide to try and act smart, don't...
@IFartOnFatKids driving high... what are kids these days being taught? to be stupid? If you are high and get pulled over, you can be arrested for being under the influence of a controlled substance. and besides, comparing it to caffeine and saying it's a "mind altering" drug is being very vague when looking into detail of what each actually do. So please, next time you decide to try and act smart, don't.
5 times as many deaths per mile walked than per mile driven. a car often goes 70 miles per hour, a person goes about 3 miles per hour.
Compare driving drunk for half an hour and walking drunk for half an hour and we have (70/2)/(3*5/2) = 4.67, so driving drunk for half an hour causes about 4.67 times as many death as walking drunk for half an hour.
how you present the data can make things sound very different.
70mph is too high, there aren't even any roads in my city which go that fast. Also, I don't see the point of introducing the "half hour" if you divide the numerator and denominator, then you don't affect the result. ie 70/(3*5) = (70/2)/(3*5/2) Ratios are not quantitative. Lastly, I don't like how they just say "drunk", there are levels of drunkenness. When I've walked, it's because I was too drunk to even read the street signs.
Different presentations of the same data can give people different impressions. I was essentially presenting the same data, but it gave an opposite implication. Of course, I could have equivalently said "driving/walking for a year", but people would think "how often do I do that?" Half an hour was just a nice number for people to read.
And I agree that a simple "drunk" cannot precisely describe all scenarios. My point was just drawing conclusions from data like they do is rather bs.
I guess it's just that around here people (or at least my friends) tend to drive 70 for half an hour to get to their suburb homes from downtown. But even at 50~60 mph, driving is still more dangerous than walking when you equate the time.
The reason why they presented the data the way they did is because distance is a fixed value in that scenario: "A person has to travel X number of kilometers to get to his/her home from the bar"
Therefore the point that they're trying to make is that drunk driving home the X number of miles is 8 times safer than driving.
I think the way you presented the data is less informative. Who walks and drives the same speed (i.e. X divided by 30 min) to go from location A to B?
When it comes to accident rate, time makes more sense. We've all seen accident rates like "350 deaths a year", but hardly ever "12 deaths every mile".
Using the way they presented the data, we can easily infer that it is the most dangerous sitting in a chair drunk. Say even if there has been only one case of death sitting down and drinking, we'll have an infinite amount of deaths per mile.
Attempted murder should be a crime no matter what the reason the murderer had.
When people set out driving drunk, they have no intention of hurting anyone. They just want to get home. And most arrive home safely. So you can't equate attempted murder with DUI.
Drunk drivers are terrorists? That's real hyperbole.
8 times more likely per mile walked-- Ok- but how many more miles can a car cover in a trip than a walker? I don't think miles per accident is a good metric to apply equivalently to both cases here.
Perhaps drunk walking is more dangerous to the drunk, but at least it, unlike drunk driving, kills virtually no one. Drunk driving is worse simply due to the force exerted by a one-tonne titanium/aluminum/steel/carbon fiber missile.
Responsibility is what matters here of course. If you drunk-walk into a wild stream or in front of a car, all is fine. If you mow down a group of pedestrians, not so much.
well conclusion get someone sober to drive you home(taxi, friend etc), drink where you sleep or get a pill that makes you sober right away.

Road checkpoints violate the 4th amendment.
Do you want random pull-overs with mandatory breathalizers?
More cops are not the answer. Just make people make restitution when they damage property or hurt people whatever the cause.

When 1 of every 104 driver mile is by a drunk, how effective can prohibition actually be?
Think of a person at a bar, after having too many drinks, and with one way home... the car...
They know that 99% of the time, they can get the car home and not get caught. Having it be illegal is little deterrent.
And if they really DO get home, there is no harm done 99% of the time. No harm, no foul.
Look, I know that drunk driving is stupid, and I don't do it. But prohibition doesn't work.

And that will be just as effective as outlawing drunk driving: i.e. not effective at all.

There should only be a penalty for drunk driving if you actually cause someone injury or do property damage.
