  • Glossy ftw, if the glare annoys you outside use a ViewGuard Anti-Glare screen protector lol

I prefer the vibrant colors ^_^

  • I also prefer the silver screen this looks like a apple laptop to me all silver thats a mac laptop when I think of one. I like the black keys it brings them out amongst the silver case but prefer the silver screen like I say looks like a proper mac

  • This video has helped me, I am looking into both screens, I can see here the glossy is annoying. The reflections are terrible I couldn't stand that. And when paying £1500 for a laptop I must get it right its to much money to get it wrong. Ok the glossy colours are better but you see that when there side by side, your never gonna use them side by side so your not gonna notice. And the benefits of antiglare out weigh the benefits of the richer colours massively!!!

  • The song is freaking awsome.

  • what i wanted to say also, is the fact that no maker put this in specification. Some makers even mention main board details, but not this, which I think is quite important.

  • i just bought a new notebook. I took time to choose it. I checked everything I possibly knew about computer. But after purchased I noticed the glares and reflections. I use my notebook outdoor a lot.

I notice many people liking glossy, but it kinda bothers me. I hope after awhile I will get used to it.

  • having only had a glossy finish, i can't compare the two... but i can say that the glare factor is only a problem if you're sitting in direct sunlight. and even then, it still an unpleasent viewing experience. Im not saying its any better or worse than the matte finish... I'm only saying that its not as bad as people make it out to be.

  • Glossy <3

  • Awesome, thank you very much that was very helpful.

  • Or if you really like the black bezel, get an antiglare filter to stick on.

  • i like matte more, matte is good for my eye

but glossy black color looks good

  • Thanks for the USEFULL compairison, I intend on purchasing a MBP next year for school and could decide between the two. Every other review ends up on a debate of "I like bklack border, so glossy better", "No, I like silver border better so matte better". I personally think that the aluminum border is slicker as it matches the rest of the MBP, however the glass makes a very nice finish, but this is a seperate debate. I am interested in what SCREEN is better, and thanks to this video I can decide.

  • Perhaps matte has a thinner viewing angle, but my understanding is that laptops are still personal computers, not theatre screens.

  • useful video. nice.

  • i love the grey around the screen. I got the 15 inch basic model 2011, i SO wish apple made all there screens with grey around them, with the free option of black around the screen

  • I'll pay for matte screen if apple are willing to make the frame of it black. grey looks like back to the discrete macbook pro.

  • EXCELLENT review bro, nicely done.

  • summary @2:09

  • glossy sucks. reflections reflections reflections. i don't give a crap about brighter colors. the fact is that reflections are annoying as fuck. i want a screen not a mirror. yet glossy dominates the market. fuck glossy. i fucking hate it.

  • @digitaldown lol, ultimate rage ? :D

  • @digitaldown reflections are easily avoidable and if you intend to game you shouldn't be outside in the first place and would already be aware of how to avoid reflections.

  • @lordloch i don't game. i work. avoid reflections? easily avoidable? you're a dumbass.

  • @digitaldown Says the person who can't form simple coherent sentences or knows how to use basic grammar. Oh never mind, you're from United States; that explains everything.

  • @lordloch You nitpicking twit. Check your last post for grammar, dickhead. It wasn't perfect either. stupid english teabag grammar police

  • @digitaldown Actually it is perfect, go cry some more at the end of the day you know deep down that you are actually English yourself; after all you descended from us.

Aww look at the little American crying on the internet throwing profanity left, right and center because he is inferior to those with higher education.

USA = Unlimited Supply of Arseholes, kind of makes sense don't you think?

  • @lordloch Actually it is not perfect. If you're higher education was worth anything you'd see that. Really.

  • @digitaldown I understand you, but it doesn't dominate the market. Matte dominates the market. At least 95% of the screens are matte.

  • @guuso123 At least 95% of the screens are matte? whrere? Maybe in the Netherlands. But here in the U.S.A. it's all glossy. Hardly any matte screens here.

  • @digitaldown K I didn't know. In The Netherlands it's almost all matte. site : tweakers . net

  • @guuso123 You can translate it with google translate.

  • awesome explanation!

  • Fantastic video, thank you so much. I've been equivocating over which stand-alone monitor to get with a desktop computer for a while, and this was just brilliantly helpful, and saved a lot of time to boot. Great stuff.

  • This was so helpful! I also loved the font that you used!

  • Nice video.... vibrant does not mean accurate=== I ordered anti gloss hi res...... Faggots use macs? you mean faggots with money? Go use ur pc bitch

  • Not a bad video for a faggot who uses mac's

  • pretty good. My asus g74sx 3d laptop has a matte screen finish. There is a glossy version as well. Asus are great engineers that for the matte screen finish they have given the unit a stronger LED backlit display. My display is brilliant

  • ok. the less strain on eyes just bought me.. matte. even though glossy colous are nicer..

  • love my glossy display on my mpb17 2011.

using it indoors, for school and stuff (game-artist).

  • Glossy is sort of like putting on a fresh coat of wax on everything -- everything appears richer and more vibrant, but it's artificial, and won't show what is truly there like a matte screen will. Really, the best advice is for people to actually go out and look at a matte-screen themselves and see what it looks like to make up their minds.

  • Great job!! Very fair and square, and very helpful :) thank you.

  • nice video, matte might be the better choice for a designer, and gloss for a movie watcher...

  • Actually, for the 'Sager NP5160 / Clevo W150HN', the matte screen comes with it, but for glossy it is 50 dollars more.

  • I still can't decide! I had a 2011 15" Glossy but returned it because it had problems, but now it's just really hard picking which one to get. Is there really that much of a difference between the two or are some people exaggerating? Can't the settings be tweaked also? I'm leaning towards Matte, but someone help me! Lol, :P

  • many thanks for this video :) ....... keep going forward

  • HELP! I really need help to choose which is better , could anybody tell me what's positive about both?

  • @planerhys121 watch the video

  • @planerhys121 lol

  • thank you for this video.

  • I'll probably just get a matte macbook pro and a glossy screen (since the screen's gonna be sitting indoors most of the time anyways

  • u see, for me, if the bezel on the matte screen was black, there wouldn't be a problem here. I like the matte screen but HATE the white bezel.

  • glossy just just hurt my eyes..... :(

  • I have been editing video and photos for years and never heard of anyone saying that an LCD was delivering true color. If you want true color you would use a high end CRT display. This claim must mean something other than what it sounds like. Maybe it is easier for an eye to identify clearly a color with matte...

Also, if the color is not what you think you want, why not use a calibrator then some personal adjustment to give it English.

  • I've had a glossy mac for a while and wish I had gotten the matte. This is a MIRROR. The worst is watching a movie and seeing my face in the screen. The glossy is horrible under sunlight or any bright conditions, severely limiting where you can work. As far as coloration goes, the increased brightness, contrast and saturation of the glossy does not necessarily make a better image. The matte can achieve just about the same intense imagery in a darker room.

  • great video but i still can't decide :p

  • @metallica5959 i know right...

  • how about doing colorcalibration on both screens, much more accurate calibration of colors on the matte version because there aint sheet of glass between the screen

  • Matte FTW!

  • i want matt!

  • Professional Graphic Designers Still like the matte. The glossy is nice to look at but i cant live with it every day its a pain in the ass when you take it outside.

  • Can't I just get a glossy MBP and a Matte anti glare screen protector afterwards? Would it make a difference? I prefer Matte surfaces on touchscreen devices since I hate smudges and glossy is a virtual fingerprint/dirt magnet, however on a laptop where I hardly have to interact with the screen, I prefer Glossy for it's looks on the MBP (love the black Bessel). If you regret afterwards, get a matte protector.

Either ways, nice video comparing pros and cons of both...

  • thanks for the video! very thorough!

  • Very fair video clearly stating the benefits and disadvantages of each option. This video has helped in my decision making. Although I like the look of the glossy screen, I cannot let that distract me from the fact that I'll be using this MBP everywhere. Matte is a better choice, it seems, for what I'll be doing. Thank you very much for the video.

  • I think glossy can sometimes be better outside (or under lots of light).

While glossy screens have some specular reflection, the total reflection of a matte screen is typically more. It is like comparing a 'very dark' mirror to 'less dark' paper. Which is worse is very hard to say, but I have found that glossy screens can be repositioned easily so that most of light is reflected away from the viewer's eyes. Matte screens cannot be repositioned like this because they have no specular reflection.

  • Without actually looking at both machines side by side, this is the best video representation I have seen of the comparison.

    Thanks!

  • Thanks for doing the comparison it's going to help me on my next purchase. Anyone....suggest some sites were I can compare low prices but using the real McCoy. Thanks

  • Unfair test matte had more apps on its dock!!!!!!!

  • @Ronny27562 :)

  • Thought this was about matte vs glossy paper.. =/

  • very helpful, thanks

  • could you compare them outside?

  • Great side by side comparison between two screen types. I am going to use mine indoors mostly so I decided to go with the glossy and simply add an green onion anti-glare filter.

  • this is the EXACT video I was looking for! thank you sooooo much! thumbs up for your video!

  • Are you ready to make a Krabby Patty?

  • @SirFakeName

    Krabbimitsu.

  • which is better for watching video and movies? or surfiing the web and video chatting?

  • Is there noticable grain caused by the Anti glare coating on the matte screen? My Dell ips u2711 is matte and whites are not pure. You constantly see the grain from the anti glare coating. It feels like the screen is constantly dirty, like dust or something. Is this also the case with the macbook pro matte screen? Or does it look like the good old matte macbook pro before the unibody?

  • 'What you see on the screen is what you print'

    ...yeah, right

  • haha song from the krusty krab training video

  • Looks like i'll be getting the matte, they should get matte macbook pro 13 inches. ugh, make me spend an extra $600 why dont ya?

  • I'm on outside my house using a 13 inch Macbook with the brightness all the way up and the reflections are there but they don't bother me because the brightness on this is intense so I can enjoy using it outside without any problems. I was using a 15 inch Macbook Pro Antiglare outside with the brightness all the way up and I didn't like it because the brightness was not as intense as the glossy one. I didn't get reflections, but the screen was dimmer. Glossy FTW!!

  • Matte rules ;)

  • i don't understand why anyone would get a glossy screen....i was watching a movie on my friend's macbook pro and it was unwatchable with all the glare....it is sooo annoying....i wanted to throw the laptop out the window.

  • Thank you soooo much! Thank you! Thank you!

I've spent hours searching for it and you helped me to decide between them as soon as I finished watching your video.

In my case and for my needs... MATTE!

Again, very very very THANKS! !!! :)

  • Fantastic Comparison! Great work!

  • 'they seem fairly identical in color and picture quality now' imho i just don't think so because like you said before the colors seem to be like washed out and we can even still see the same, can't we??? the picture seems obviously better thanks to the glossy screen

  • I nearly turned off when the music started and the subtitles came up (instead of voice). But I am so glad I didn't! Thanks for the video this has thrown up some really good points and excellent comparisons. I can really tell why people buy the anti-glare and why others prefer the glossy.

I'm going to buy myself a MacBook for design at university and because of this, I'm pretty set on buying the anti-glare model for better colour accuracy and outdoor ability.

    Thanks again!

  • according to ergonomics experts... paid by apple.

  • Good thing this isn't one of the other biased videos. I'm glad I chose matte :p

  • Matte = WIN. From what ive seen in this video mate is the finish for me! Thanks for finally getting me to decide.

  • i really wish they made the white macbook and 13 macbook pro with matte screen,

  • I like both screens but I prefer the glossy because the colors do look more vibrant. I had a 15 inch Macbook antiglare and I loved but this new one with the glossy screen is way more elegant and super nice looking. Also the design on the glossy is more appealing than the Matte on the Macbook Pro.

  • this help me decide which one to get. thank you!! great video and I ultimately chose to go with the anti glare option with Apple, even though its extra cost but be worth it cuz it be more versatile in all lighting conditions.:)

  • the glare on glossy is horrible. i hate glossy.

  • As a designer, photographer and print publisher. I recommended matte screen. You won't regret it. True color and less strain to your eyes. I live my external matte screen over my glossy HDX 16 laptop screen which looks total crap when placed side by side to my 23inch LG monitor.

  • I love Matte screen aka true color but silver bezel I'm okay with that. At least it's medal frame more durable than plastic black.

  • I just don't understand why Apple decided to use a silver border around the Matte Anti Glare screen. Having a black border matches the MBP better.

  • It's funny, my laptop has a glossy screen (the only option available for MacBooks at that time, no MacBook Pros 13'' yet, sorry) whereas my 24'' 1920x1200 16:10 external display set in a controlled environment is matte.

    The world upside down!

  • the glossy screen makes the color look much deeper n rich

  • I'm a Photographer. I require that my monitors are calibrated so I am getting the best colours and contrast. I do not want to look at a glossy reflective screen when I’m working, or for that matter what ever I’m doing on the desktop or laptop. Glossy screens may seem to give punchy colours which is fine if you are into that. Blacks are fine on matte screens, black is black for me. I just feel that being a sheep and getting a glossy screen just because is not the right thing to do.

  • Great video, many thanks!

  • im going for the glossy i dont like the Matte border i like the black one better

  • Hands down the best comparison video on the subject (and I've seen a whole lot of them)! As I am debating a switch from pc to mac, hope you keep those macbook pro features videos coming. Cheers mate!

  • Thumbs up if you like this comment: Guys if you put a black macbook pro skin- speck brand on your macbook pro- it will fit the macbook pro antiglare a lot more than the glossy.

  • @ddimitrov007 i think the video is fair for both. i mention that colors r more vibrant on glossy, but perhaps unlike u, i go outside so i include the disadvantages of glossy. both laptops were in the same conditions and these r the unmodified results. of course i do try to get the most out of each display. it is unfair if u compare the best of glossy vs the worst of matte. so i compare the best of both. i dont support bias and 4 u to come and say to buy glossy without giving any reasons is bias.

  • @SwiftSilverSword

i think this was very fair! even though i got myself the glossy screen because it would cost me 150 (euro's for me) to upgrade to a matte screen and i already find myself that the macbook (pro's) are very expensive at least for me speaking as a 16 year old guy. however i do not agree with the fact that you said matte was better for fingerprints because i don't even want anybody to even touch my screen at all! all of the rest was very fair and true ;) nice video!

  • @SwiftSilverSword i thought this was very fair, thank you alot you saved me alot of money now i can see the ag screen is not as bad as people said it was

  • @ddimitrov007 The video is a fair comparison get your head outta your ass you are the biased one

  • @ddimitrov007 wow you're an idiot. I'd go as far as saying he's a glossy fan to be honest...

  • This video is great because it makes the point that the some of the criticisms of the matte screen can be partially alleviated by knocking the brightness down a touch.

I was really struggling to decide because I need true colour and outside visibility, but only very rarely. The rest of the time I'll just be using it for the web and watching DVDs, making me unwilling to sacrifice the glossy screen's "popping" colours for only occasional inconvenience. Now you've convinced me to go for matte :)

  • Very good editing, a nice video to watch

  • Out of all the video comparisons I've been look through on YouTube., yours was the best. Thanks for the comparisons, it helped a great deal what screen I will be choosing for my MBP.... glossy it is. Thanks again.

  • Its much the diference of a glossy tn and a matte ips?¿ in question of colours

  • which one would you say is better for a animator/ game developer. can't make my mind up.

  • @goldaceofspades i would say matte? main reason is cuz the color represented is closer to the true color. plus u wont have to strain ur eyes as much?

  • @goldaceofspades probably u want true color representation if u r animating, so i wud go with matte. if u r truly undecided. get the matte and connect it to a glossy monitor like a tv. this will allow u to see how ur animation looks on different screens but also if the monitor is much bigger u might notice a few details that u cud hv missed b4. sry 4 l8 reply

  • @SwiftSilverSword for gaming glossy is the best!!!!! Sure matte has not glare but glossy has a better picture and more vibrant picture. That's essential for gaming/graphics.

  • which font used in vid? please answer pleaseeeee!

  • @Psycna the font is called arctic. sry 4 l8 reply

  • Absolutely brilliant video. I was hoping you were going to give me reasons to get a glossy screen. But now I am more convinced than ever about matte. Only problem is PCs do not seem to come in matte - especially with long life batteries. Anyone got any ideas?

  • Huge thanks for putting this together. Very helpful!!!

  • This is making me cry ... I give the video and the uploader 5 carabaos (am from asia) ... i am an amateur designer and this is my first macbook pro ... all designer b\voted for the anti-glare version but then why did apple decided to have the border return to silver, it doesn't even look like the same material as the whole unibody. am sure most request for the anti-glare came from designers so

  • ... so why did they freakin overlooked that the black border looks great ... and is to be kept for either anti-glare or glossy versions. the silver border doesn't match the black keysss!!!!! wahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh :(

  • i am buying a macbook pro, this was my main concern thank you

  • for video editing i have the glossy. i rarely take my computer outside and for presenting i use a projector. no need to pay more for washed out colors, especially when editing videos you need all the colors you can get.

  • excellent! Thanks for posting, this is just what I needed to know

  • I am confused. I would use it mostly indoors and I want its battery to last longer. also I have a thing with my eyes straining very easily. Which one should I buy?

  • @Veradrix90 Then matte, +1 you can set brightness at lower level, thus longer battery life, +1 your eyes will strain less, -1 indoors under relative dark conditions w/o significative reflections glossy looks better. Result: +2 - 1 = +1 for matte (assuming all 3 considerations as equivalent.)

  • I have an older MacBook Pro with a matte display. I think the newer ones look better with the glossy screens (black border with black keys), but I hate glare >.< Does anyone know if there are matte screen protectors for the new MacBook Pro?

  • Excellent video

  • thanks for the vid...well done!

  • Excellent review best one ive seen. 1080p nice touch

  • Glossy one has a slightly thick deep black border around screen, so that makes and illusion that you think it has more contrast and more vivid colors. It's just a perception. Both screens are equal, except glossy is really reflective even indoors on a day. Matte is better. Just look at pro segment of the monitors, Nec, Dell, Eizo, they all make matte finish monitors for graphic professional and designers.

  • Matte is better

  • Matte is better as it's not so reflective.

  • fantastic video! the first one in about a thousand "glossy vs. matte" videos i watched today, that really seems objective and helps me to decide! thank you!

  • hahaha the m of the word matte looks like the end of a penis XD

  • Nice comparison!

  • i got the matte version for one reason. I am a graphic designer and i need to be able to have true color when working with prints.

  • Glossy display are better colors and bright, for indoor is perfect.

Matte display for outdoors, for people needed work with light of sun.

  • @iDavid3GS well even indoors u can hv glare on the glossy. rly the only way to reduce it is to be in a dark room which i usually dont like to be in (unless its 4 watching a movie). the reason y im saying that ppl shud get the matte is cos portability is important for a laptop. if ur gna keep ur laptop indoors all the time, then y not get a desktop? also u can connect the matte display to an external glossy monitor wen indoors to get the best of both. (at a higher cost tho)

  • @SwiftSilverSword Bang on! What is the point of a laptop that stays at home all the time? Better getting a desktop - it is cheaper, more reliable and has a lot more features!!

  • Thank you soo much you helped me in making my Decision i am going with Matte Display :D

  • thanks heaps! i'm buying a macbook pro 15" i7 this week for first time ever. but still have a soft-corner for windows :P

the anti-glare one comes with a while border, which i don't like the look of. so i'll buy glossy screen but as recommeded by chris pirillo, i'll get clearcal adhesive anti-glare sheet.. which is very inexpensive and i hear its good... so there's some measure to protect my vision and also not have distracting reflections. =)

  • @mavishill lol i was thinking of doing the same thing. but i have a complete lack of confidence in my ability to stick things. i would probably stick the antiglare sheet tilted or with dust or an air bubble under it which i wud find v annoying. the aluminum border rly is not that bad if u ask me. it makes the rubber black line around the edges look thinner, more precise and also matches the body more. its shudnt be $50 tho and i admit the glass panel does look better. just my opinion.

  • this is pretty much the Superbowl of screens... one question though, cant you just turn down the brightness a bit when doing a color test?

  • @cody8005 the reason brightness is at its max on glossy is to reduce glare, which is still noticeable even tho it is not under direct light. i agree it shud hv been done in a perfectly dark room for the color test but its unlikely that u will always be in a dark room so its also a more realistic test.

  • does the matte border stick out? cuz i noe the glossy one with the black border is completely flat.

  • @booiel3x the matte screen does have an aluminum border which does stick out altho that its very slight, its not perfectly flat like the glossy option. do u want me to send u a link showing the aluminum border in more detail?

  • @SwiftSilverSword Yes Please! awesome video & thanks so much!

  • @booiel3x ok, i sent u a msg with the links, im also gna put it in the video description for ppl who are interested

  • This is exactly what I was looking for - why get matte vs why get glossy!

Pretty sure I'm going matte now, despite the nicer look of the black bezel round the screen on the glossy. Thanks for the video!

  • great video. thanks

  • wow! i've been searching for a good comparison all day, this is great. thanks!!

  • very good presentation. Thanks so much. I am going matte.

  • wots that song? it kicks ass! ( glossy pwns )

  • @TechSmack its in the description at the very bottom.

quest for the best by david reilly

  • glossy pwns

  • A very good presentation. I actually just got my new core i7 Macbook Pro that I ordered in glossy because I wanted a higher contrast, more vibrant screen, but not only was the screen a virtual mirror, it had TOO much color. So I returned it and ordered one in matte. So much for all my research on which screen to get. Matte is definitely the way to go.

  • @CannonKnight thanks for sharing that. might i ask what size? 15"?

  • @SwiftSilverSword....I have the 17". Funny thing is for about 3 years now I've been using a 17" Sony Vaio laptop. The MacBook Pro is so much thinner and lighter compared to it, it's almost like a netbook to me. The MacBook Pro is what switched me to a Mac. It's an incredible piece is engineering.

  • @CannonKnight yeah, the macbook pro is a great piece of engineering and design. altho i wud have liked more ports like hdmi / dvi / vga or at least the cables out of the box for the mini display port.

  • @CannonKnight There's no way to modify the MacBook Pro display color saturation?

  • i still have no clue which one i should get

  • @zakattakk1 i would get the matte display. u can always connect to a glossy display when u r indoors and matte is better outdoors. this way u get the best of both. (but it is also more expensive since u need an additional screen)
