  • I'm trying to find guitar lessons for singing with more advanced guitar. All I find are ones with playing chords.

  • Thnx ur a great teacher!

  • Thanks! Been trying to grasp this trick for a long time now.

Also, do you think growing a beard and having messy hair, thus looking like you are having a crisis, helps you to deliver your music more powerfully? ;P

  • @SuperHysy Growing a beard and having messy hair are actually by-products of not working for "the man". Hence, when I wake up in the morning, I get the choice of saying, "shall I shave today, nah!". I'm not sure how it would help to deliver music though. If it helps you, then the answer is "yes!"

    :)

    e

  • Your hair always looks like shit dude, take a shower dang.

  • #Thankyou so much!!! ^_^

    you really help me...

  • my guitar's age or my guitar sage?

  • Isnt your pointer finger on G Chord supposed to be on 2nd fret 2nd string? Looking it up it says that but i see ur pointer lifted while playing Hallelujah

  • @akhkharas well it was how i described in first time you played it, just curious if thats an alternate way of playing it or if it was a simple mistake

  • @akhkharas

u might not ever read this comment, but it is an alternate way to do a G chord. u can do it either way. both sound the same.

  • this is cool! check out my videos! i play the guitar and the piano while singing cover songs!! check it out :)

  • you look like chuck norris....

  • @101flameboy I FEEL like Chuck Norris!

  • is it just me or does this guy look stoned and hung over?

  • I'm trying to figure out how to play the mandolin break of Losin My Religion, and sing the 'that was just a dream' bit over it. This video helps a lot.

  • ya you and your e-book... if only i had the cash

  • this really helps coming from someone who thought they could never sing and play guitar XD im breaking down apple blossom by the white stripes and doing it chord by chord is really helping my visulize how to sing it WRITE THE CHORDS ON THE LYRICS DOWN PEOPLE it really helps XD

  • @yourguitarsage you are wise my friend. thanks allot i learned last kiss by pearl jam for my girlfriend and this is the reason i can sing and play the song plus i have a new philosophy to tell my little brother to help him learn guitar. again thank you very much

  • yeah, this vid had the best philosophy than other vids :D

  • how do play a base note while picking something else and doing something with your left hand aswell?!?

  • Thanks this really helped!

  • Wow, you inspire me. I have to be honest I cant really learn songs from you, I cant learn visually, all I need is the chords and strum pattern. But you have really inspired me to learn guitar and I thank you for that.

  • @PeculiarLotus Thank you friend. Glad it helped!

  • you see, most of my friends will say that i have amazing natural talent, and i say

  • Thanks, even though I play Death Metal, this helped a lot =)

  • You make it look so easy. I want to practice right now! But it is a quarter til 3 AM, haha.

  • haaa! you are a god amongst men :3

this is something I really struggle with, and 10 minutes of following your advice has already yielded noticeable results :D

thanks for all the helpful videos, man!

  • One thing I must say is I found upon practising a song over and over again my instincts sort of played them easily and freed my mind for singing, and without even especially trying I found I could sing and play guitar at the same time :)

  • but i wanna strum on it....

  • Very Helpful! "Thank You". :)c

  • You couldn't say it any better than "Practice". 1% talent and 99% work. Thanks for these videos. You are a great person for making them. It goes that way for everything. I'm an actor and I feel I'm the best in the room because I eat live and breath a script when I get one. I do the same with playing instruments and it shows because I practice. People say it's talent except I know better then that but I'll roll with it. Sure I have talent. My confidence comes from being prepared.

  • @dormanbenton You are totally right my friend. It's our secret! Thank you for the kind words too.

  • @yourguitarsage It's just great when I hear you say that because I've come to the same conclusion. lol I could ramble on and on about it but I'll leave it at that. I've used many of your videos. I'll stay tuned! :-)

  • cheers for the help, tough stuff, but im persistent...

  • i think im just super retarded lol cant do it!

  • At 0:02 my opinion turned, now I think this actually WAS worth 10 min of my life. ^_^

  • Thats the way I learned.....I broke it down just like the way he said and I was self taught on guitar and I wanted to be able to sing some songs and did as the man said....Dont give up at all this info is true and will help you so take your time and dont worry about everyone else and play at your pace....Peace and Rock on

  • Thanks for this helped me :)

  • bout min 2:3, fuckin justin bieber did it,

  • @irocklalot Wrong, Justin Bieber practiced a lot. Plus, is that who you are saying is a genius musician?

  • @yourguitarsage yeah but sure he´s got talent too. usher wouldnt discover him

    if we wouldnt be talented

  • thats really helpful,, thnx ..

sir could you plz tell the song you singing ? .

  • We're all rockstars!

  • i learned psychology and singing/playing tips in one video. awesome !

  • I can't really play and sing at the same time. What helped me is to hum the song while playing the song slowly and then slowly progressing into lyrics.

  • @pinoysuperray18 possibly the best way to do it most of the time :P

  • You explain things real well there, in fact I had a conversation with my friend while joggin a few days ago. Now I know how to process the explanation of the thought process, KUDOS.

  • watched your videos and wish i was that good, you seem pretty good hehe, you should watch mine and tell me what you think and any suggestions on songs i could sing

  • Wish you where my teacher... :D

    Where do you teach guitar?

  • when he said michale jackson i thought "a lot of hard work and an abusive dad"

  • The whole "only play the chord " thing doesn't really work for metal because metal is so much harder. Any advice as for what to do when doing metal vocals (screams/growls) and playing stuff like trivium on guitar at the same time?

  • A sage you are.

  • Omg he sings !!! I thought he only did high pitch sounds

  • Thank you.

  • Hey man! I just posted a video of my playing and singing on utube! I was wondering if you could give some feed back on them? Tell what you think i could work on to improve on my singing and playing. You can find my songs under Knocked Down by Tony Canterbury and Thief In The Night by Tony Canterbury.

  • :D i love your examples hahaha

  • good lessons

  • my guitar teacher says basically the same thing [:

and this isn't very important, but keith urban is my favorite musican and i'm glad you used him as an example!! [:

  • Great advice man!! This has been keeping me giving me a problem for a long time

  • You need to know the major scale in chord form and the Circle of fifths.

Some people can pick this up over years of playing, put had they under stood the major scale and the circle those years could be a few days or a month or two.

People learn differently, but hard work pays off and it is the way most people learn

    Great Job

    THANKS

    Steveo

  • how do you do thing same concept but with a song with more strumming, like a D UDUD UDUD DU for 1 chord? (Taylor Swift's Fifteen)

  • could you make a video of how to play always the love songs or guinevere by eli young band please?

    thanks!!

  • You look like you just woke up lol

  • acrobats and accountants

  • this is great, i feel like im ready to join the circus now

  • Sage, I have a guitar tuner made by staggs, and on it you can change whatever key you wanna tune it to, But i cannot find the "Standard" Tuning. Heres what is one there when i go through it.

g,b,v, c u, d u, c key, f key, Bb key, Eb key. Which one is standard? Is it "G"?

  • ...finally catching up on some video watching...I like this one very much...

  • Been needing a lesson like this for a while! Thanks!

  • this is cool ;D

mhh boulevard of broken dreams by green day is good to practise singing and playing (:

  • Nice, thanks!

  • Keith Urban - Aussies Do It Best! :P

  • very inspirational words. thanks my friend. they say "practice makes perfect!"

  • thanks!!!! a lot!!!

  • Your an amazing teacher all your videos are great!!...you've taught me so much thanks a million :-)

  • you are the man......very smart

  • Thanks for this tutorial!!! =D

  • @Fishpks This is also helps with wind instruments as far as high notes and chops (lips). It also helps lock down rhythms and melodies.

  • WHICH ARE THE CHORDS?

  • @MrBono21

    Simple,

    C - Am - C - Am

    F - G - C

  • Upon saying you need to play the song slowly, which allows you to think about what you need to do -- Steve Vai has said the secret to playing fast is being able to play slow :p same concept, and it works ^^

  • @Fishpks So true. I tell my students that all the time. If you want to play fast, play slow, it will come, but not before it's time. Be patient. If you try to play fast, you will play sloppy and that kind of fast does not count.

    :)

    e

  • @yourguitarsage when i was young i played fast and sloppy but eventualy it got cleaner and cleaner.i practiced slow too though.

  • comment rate and subscribe too me ill tell you anything about the guitar you need to know :)

  • thank you ...

    mr. yourguitarsage..

do you have any tips how to play fast licks like GnR solos ?

  • great lesson and thanks for the motivation, really helps

    cheers

  • I don't agree to him when it comees to the 99% work and 1% talent...

Coz if you look at Jimi Henrix, and guys like him... I think they were born with simply being born to play guitar....

  • @TheLordHodne

That's an excuse that people use for NOT excelling at anything. Study ANYBODY who is good at anything and if they are honest, there will be many, many hours and years of dedication. Hendrix ate, sleep and drank guitar, otherwise he would have been playing at 3 years old.

  • Comment removed

  • @TheLordHodne no offense taken my friend :-) I know it sounds hard to believe, and most people think this way. However, I know painters, photographers, screenwriters and others in all different arts. They either go to school, practice a lot or just in general work on their craft to perfection. Music is just like anything else that you want to get good at, you have to dedicate much time to it. Anything that you want to excel at, you can. check out the book, "the outliers"

  • @TheLordHodne Thank you my friend!

    :)

    e

  • can you make a vid on how to play follow me by uncel kracker

  • really nice lesson :D

  • great advice! I've been wanting to learn guitar, but I haven't got the knack yet. I will deffinetly use your advice!

  • Is that a mic on your guitar?

6:36 sit there and be able to walk? now thats talent!

  • Take heed all viewers- This is great advice- it's a natural process of developing an expertise.

  • I love you, but you ramble so so SO much!!!!! =P

    you're still awesome though

  • eee i love your voice :)

  • Great video.

To back up what you're saying: There have been studies done and, surprise surprise, the people who reach 'professional' levels playing instruments are those who put the most hours in.

There is a direct correlation between competence and the hours of practice -- even the musical geniuses of the world are those who have plugged away for thousands of hours. I don't think practice is the only factor, but it is surely the dominant one.

  • hallelujah was written by Leonard cohen.

  • wow now i really want to learn this song on guitar now you should do a just a guitar video for it haha :) your awesome!

  • good stuff man! You help me out alot!!!

  • As I watched this vid I thought on each part :

"That goes without saying!", but it actually never came to my mind, haha! ...so maybe there's still hope for me.. ;-]

    1000 Thanx, mate !!

    Peace

    Harry

  • I though it was 99% heart... I can't sing to save my life but I'll definitely remember this!

  • Really Great Advice, well presented.

    Cheers

  • thanks so much! i have grown a lot in guitar from this channel!

  • dude, its free! Cant complain! If so, move on...

  • great tips man

    really good

  • Its a shame always gotta have people like golden over there. Your doing these vids and asking nothing in return. Just because you wanna help and you can and all this "useless crap" that his refering to..If he\they actually took a chance to take what your saying in they would realise it was very helpful ..Thanks for doing this vid i struggle with singing at same time and figured its something you can or just cant do. Thanks..Also im looking at buying a takemine anything u can say bout them?

  • Thank you my friend!

    :)

    e

  • @BrockLister1 i have one! their really good and they are very hardy guitars haha! they sound amazing aswell!

  • I love your voice singing Hallelujah....... it's brilliant ! please do a cover so something =D

  • oh I love you so much :D my friends always tell me that I have great talent just because I can a few simple chords. it's just work. maby just a little tiny bit of talent... the singing and playing part is the only thing I had problems with, and I actually did what you just told, but it kinda didn't seem "right". now it does. thank you!!

  • I've only now realised that your channel is called 'Your Guitar Sage' and not 'You Guitar's Age'.

Where was Captain Obvious when I needed him?

  • @ViolentRiC

HAHA!! Captain obvious to the rescue. Easy to mistake though!

    :)

    e

  • thank you so much :) this is a great help to me, i'm in the process of yet singing and playing properly :D i'm working on Taylor Swift - Tear drops on my guitar with the help of your video on that song, but when i combine two things together it sounds awful.

  • if i sing and play the guitar either my stumming gets fucked up or my singing get totally fucked up

  • so ture man you really are a great teacher.thanks

  • i can sing some intermediate songs with singing but only like in the choruses and stuff... and as some backup vocals not lead xD

  • Coooooooooooool xx

  • You sir, are awsome.

  • Ohyeah, really knowing the lyrics beforehand helps a lot. If you start thinking about the lyrics you're doomed to go out of tune/play something wrong.

  • And also your speech and speaking with all of us is stretched very special and extraordinary...

  • Thanks Very ! VERY much for your videos! I just love them ! keeip going, and create videos just like that ! :)

  • Haha a number of things I did wrong.

These two videos pointed out all of them!

    THANKS!

  • Yeah i had trouble with it too but now it works quite well.

    But thanks very much.

    S

  • yeah ive been struggling with this for awhile haha.. thanks for the lesson!

  • Take easy songs, play them slowly and try to feel the lyrics. Practice a lot, et voila!
