Thanks! Been trying to grasp this trick for a long time now.
Also, do you think growing a beard and having messy hair, thus looking like you are having a crisis, helps you to deliver your music more powerfully? ;P
@SuperHysy Growing a beard and having messy hair are actually by-products of not working for "the man". Hence, when I wake up in the morning, I get the choice of saying, "shall I shave today, nah!". I'm not sure how it would help to deliver music though. If it helps you, then the answer is "yes!"
Isnt your pointer finger on G Chord supposed to be on 2nd fret 2nd string? Looking it up it says that but i see ur pointer lifted while playing Hallelujah
@akhkharas well it was how i described in first time you played it, just curious if thats an alternate way of playing it or if it was a simple mistake
I'm trying to figure out how to play the mandolin break of Losin My Religion, and sing the 'that was just a dream' bit over it. This video helps a lot.
this really helps coming from someone who thought they could never sing and play guitar XD im breaking down apple blossom by the white stripes and doing it chord by chord is really helping my visulize how to sing it WRITE THE CHORDS ON THE LYRICS DOWN PEOPLE it really helps XD
@yourguitarsage you are wise my friend. thanks allot i learned last kiss by pearl jam for my girlfriend and this is the reason i can sing and play the song plus i have a new philosophy to tell my little brother to help him learn guitar. again thank you very much
Wow, you inspire me. I have to be honest I cant really learn songs from you, I cant learn visually, all I need is the chords and strum pattern. But you have really inspired me to learn guitar and I thank you for that.
hello!! really really thanks.. for teaching such a systematicly step by step, I am doing it following it, I believe myself now that I can do it, it is really my learning style, after 5 years of pritising playing guitar same time singing.. ohh my god! now I found it, I will be pritising till I got success.
One thing I must say is I found upon practising a song over and over again my instincts sort of played them easily and freed my mind for singing, and without even especially trying I found I could sing and play guitar at the same time :)
You couldn't say it any better than "Practice". 1% talent and 99% work. Thanks for these videos. You are a great person for making them. It goes that way for everything. I'm an actor and I feel I'm the best in the room because I eat live and breath a script when I get one. I do the same with playing instruments and it shows because I practice. People say it's talent except I know better then that but I'll roll with it. Sure I have talent. My confidence comes from being prepared.
@yourguitarsage It's just great when I hear you say that because I've come to the same conclusion. lol I could ramble on and on about it but I'll leave it at that. I've used many of your videos. I'll stay tuned! :-)
Thats the way I learned.....I broke it down just like the way he said and I was self taught on guitar and I wanted to be able to sing some songs and did as the man said....Dont give up at all this info is true and will help you so take your time and dont worry about everyone else and play at your pace....Peace and Rock on
I can't really play and sing at the same time. What helped me is to hum the song while playing the song slowly and then slowly progressing into lyrics.
You explain things real well there, in fact I had a conversation with my friend while joggin a few days ago. Now I know how to process the explanation of the thought process, KUDOS.
watched your videos and wish i was that good, you seem pretty good hehe, you should watch mine and tell me what you think and any suggestions on songs i could sing
The whole "only play the chord " thing doesn't really work for metal because metal is so much harder. Any advice as for what to do when doing metal vocals (screams/growls) and playing stuff like trivium on guitar at the same time?
Hey man! I just posted a video of my playing and singing on utube! I was wondering if you could give some feed back on them? Tell what you think i could work on to improve on my singing and playing. You can find my songs under Knocked Down by Tony Canterbury and Thief In The Night by Tony Canterbury.
You need to know the major scale in chord form and the Circle of fifths.
Some people can pick this up over years of playing, put had they under stood the major scale and the circle those years could be a few days or a month or two.
People learn differently, but hard work pays off and it is the way most people learn
Sage, I have a guitar tuner made by staggs, and on it you can change whatever key you wanna tune it to, But i cannot find the "Standard" Tuning. Heres what is one there when i go through it.
g,b,v, c u, d u, c key, f key, Bb key, Eb key. Which one is standard? Is it "G"?
Upon saying you need to play the song slowly, which allows you to think about what you need to do -- Steve Vai has said the secret to playing fast is being able to play slow :p same concept, and it works ^^
@Fishpks So true. I tell my students that all the time. If you want to play fast, play slow, it will come, but not before it's time. Be patient. If you try to play fast, you will play sloppy and that kind of fast does not count.

oh I love you so much :D my friends always tell me that I have great talent just because I can a few simple chords. it's just work. maby just a little tiny bit of talent... the singing and playing part is the only thing I had problems with, and I actually did what you just told, but it kinda didn't seem "right". now it does. thank you!!
