if someone has already explained this to you Thinkgamer, I apologize in advance. The part you're justifiably complaining about graphical lag. Remember sc2 is 60 to 65% cpu stress-ive. Thus the game depends on your cpu 2 or more core muscle. i'm jamming wtih a am3 phenom II 6 core overclocked at 3750mhz and i still have to dump the eye candy on everything down to pretty much medium/high and i have one gtx 580 stock 772mhz etc etc on 1680x1050 22" monitor. 8 gig ddr 3 1600 ram. cheers.
The amount of units attacking you is directly proportional to the number of infested bases.
If you don't let any get infested, then you can hold off all the attacks all level with 2-3 bunkers at each entrance full of Marines. So then you can pump more money into vikings and attacking stuff to win the level faster and easier.
hehe... I love this mission. Always replay it in Brutal. I actually let them infest all colonies while I build my defense. 35 vikings, 10 siege (including 4 mercs), a decent MMM troop, 2 bunkers on lower base, 3 on top and after they throw all they can at me I conquer all. (with 2 Planetary at main base in front of the lower bunkers)... it's just too much fun!
This is very strange!!! I have begin to follow you for my Brutal Campaign and sometime I have see a strange thing happens (private message here).
I have end 'The Dig' 10 minutes ago. And Now i have end to see this Video but when i resume my campaign this mission is not available!!!. I have only the mission Cutthroat (Mission#12) and help Tosh to take Gas at Welcome of the Jungle. Why?
And also where are the others Brutal Video? :) You have left the tutorial? :)
a fleet of vikings works fine after u secure ur base and if u don t let the zerg infect bases u don t need so many bunkers and siegetanks to defend so u can build vikings and win easily
What I would do at the beginning is to immediately begin building a 4th Viking while sending your first three to kill the Brood Lords and Overlords at the first Virophage. Then, wait for some zombies to leave, land all four at the north end of the plateau to avoid the remaining baddies, and shoot the Virophage down before it lays more eggs. You could mop up the buildings later, since the Broodlings that spawn might take down a Viking if you're not careful.
@FishThatDrown Thinking wraiths, not only do you kill off the Brood lords / mutas but you can also after cleaning off mutas you can go kill off the Hydrophage thingy .... before it infests
Having a Planetary Fortress guarding the south side of your base really helps a lot. Having some Missile Turrets around add support against Mutalisks. However, if you follow the "Mass Vikings" strategy and wipe out all possible infestations, then it's not that useful. When enemies do attack your base heavily, it is recommended; if not, Bunkers, Turrets and Siege Tanks will do just fine.
Oh and have some Vikings near your base to exterminate some Brood Lords when they attack your base.
What i did personally was building another starport and massing up vikings until i got 20+ of them. Then i just sent them out to the infested bases and put them in assault mode once i took care of air units. Then i send them back to get repaired, and so on and so on. You can reach bases rather quickly whithout getting damaged by zerg ground units on the way. This way you can keep your infested bases count low and avoid being overrun.
This mission is a lot easier once you have completed most of the other missions. After you have your base well defended, then create an air force of vikings, wraiths, and banshees. Use your cloaked wraiths to take care of enemy air units. Once all enemy air uits have been taken care of, send in banshees to eliminate enemy ground units, and vikings to clear out any remaining infected buildings.
IMO, this option is easier than Safe Haven, as Breakout seems easier than Ghost of a Chance. I suppose all 29 will have to be beaten though, for achievement-sake.

You should be trying to stop infestations.
The amount of units attacking you is directly proportional to the number of infested bases.
If you don't let any get infested, then you can hold off all the attacks all level with 2-3 bunkers at each entrance full of Marines. So then you can pump more money into vikings and attacking stuff to win the level faster and easier.
