Yeah VirtualBox doesn't have 3d support so compiz wont run.

my ubuntu on a P4 3.00ghz, 1gb ram, win xp dual boot keeps crashing when im in firefox. at first it will refresh the monitor, and then the monitor goes black and keeps refreshig and eventually goes to the ubuntu login screen. Why is this? i remeber when i intalled ubuntu i heard an error beep at the end of the install but it seemed to carry on intalling fine and it does work but just does this all the time? any ideas?

Here's an idea, go to the Ubuntu Forums and ask actual smart people for help instead of randomly spamming YouTube videos.

your video says its stable, it is still working after you press enter, slow, but still working

The problem is support for compiz ("Virtualbox can't do direct rendering" as profox111 pointed out) inside a virtual environment.

Actually, I've since installed Kubuntu Feisty on my Dell notebook. And had many issues with it (the latest being my xserver failing to start due to a faulty xorg.conf -- c'mon!). (cont...)

(...cont)While I now prefer to do my computing under linux, I still get a very "stable" "feel" when I do boot in to windows (it doesn't feel like the next action I take could result in a week-long headache).

PS - on my actual (non-virtual) install, compiz (+ awn) works nicely with a few complaints. Can't wait for the next stable release!

...because it is next to impossible to address the graphics two times at once, for each OS. Software rendering would still work.

Linux _is_ stable,

But Compiz is no official part of the Ubuntu distribution

And Virtualbox can't do direct rendering.. so it's pretty normal that it doesn't work in Virtualbox. That's why it looks white.

However, it is _not_ crashed. You should go to a virtual console (ctrl+alt+F1) and type "metacity --replace" and it will fix itself (you can then go back to the GUI with ctrl+alt+F7)

Yeah, I figured running it in the virtual box had something to do with it. Thanks for the heads-up on the metacity command. Unfortunately, the only reason I loaded Ubuntu up was the various Ubuntu+Compiz videos I've seen here on youtube. Oh, well, back to Fedora :)
