@moonshadow112358 Thanks! The retreat is being hosted by La Escuela Del Sol, but everyone is down here hanging out. You will have to make it next year!
Amazing movement and energy!! I would LOVE to fire dance with you some day, so I'll plan to make it to one of your workshops sometime in the near future. Your fire swords are really nice! Where did you find them?? Are they custom made? Many thanks! ~A
@AsiaBeeFire Thanks! If you send me your email addy I can notify you when I am offering workshops in your area. I've always made all of my own tools- including the swords featured in this video. If you are planning on making some I can offer some tips. Thanks again!
Tips on making fire tools? Could you make a video? I know my boyfriend is in a performance troupe and he's looking to make one of his own fire swords.
Pssst... I shared the video with him since he uses a lot of the same tools as you do. :D
@ruvidan As with making staffs, weight is a big consideration. I start with titanium tubes (which you can special order from titanium sport outlets or titanium tube distributors if you are ordering 10 or more) and use the lightest hardware possible to attach my wick (I use steel or aluminium rivets). When choosing the length of your sword, measure from your hand to the floor when standing, then subtract about 10 cm or more so that your sword won't scrape the ground when spinning vertically.
@ruvidan Then you've got to add in the length of your handle. If you do hand wraps you will have an idea of how long of a handle you need (for me its 20cm). If you don't do hand wraps the extra length is not necessary. At the hilt of your sword, I recommend adding a weight in order to counter balance the weight of the soaked wick- so think about how you are going to attach this weight when choosing the length of your tube. One easy way is to use a lead fishing weight and to attach it...
@ruvidan ...using an epoxy. Another way is to epoxy in a bolt which will jut out past the end of your tube and add large washers to that with a nut on the end. This will add length to your sword, so keep that in mind. I like the balance of my sword to rest just between my thumb and index finger. So step one- decide your length. Step two- add your wick. Step 3 add a flame guard at the base of the wick (use thick saddle leather or a metal sanding wheel), then...
@ruvidan ...step 4- add your weight to the hilt until the balance is where you want it. Step 5- add grip (tennis grip works great for swords).
Other considerations: leave a little gap between your wick and the flame guard (about 5cm) so it doesn't heat up or burn up. You will also need a titanium drill bit to get through your tube (under $5 in the US at local hardware stores) and of course a rivet gun if you are using rivets. I use between 8-9 ft of 2" tape for my wick per sword. ; )
I initially clicked on this for more poi motivation but i have to say i found your staffing amazing, best ive seen to date so far. i never thought i would attempt staffing after poi but this is too dirty not to try for my own. great vid, very impressive.
Nice, the way you incorporate dancing with fire skills. Many poi/fire artists don't focuss as much on the dancing part. I can tell you've had some training of some sort! Very nice. Straight lines, straight legs... even pointed toes on some of those leaps! =) Good technique... are you single? ;-) Lol.
do you have any helpful hints on how to do the isolation moves. Everytime I try to do Isolations, I feel kind of like I am doing a herp-de-derp. Any tips?
Hey, I really like your videos - thanks for sharing them with us, you're really talented. :-) I'd have one question... at what age did you start doing this? Do you think there is any hope for someone who is 25 and hasn't done fire art before but would like to start and eventually become great at it? lol
@Pholus I started in 2000 and this video is from 2010. What takes one person 10 years to learn another can learn in 6 months- you never know. Object manipulation is especially like that- either you've got it or you don't and some pick it up very easily while others will take more time. Go for it! What have you got to lose?
you have the moves down, but unlike most spinners ive seen you dont spin for perfect tech, its more about the dance which is absolutely wonderful and makes your spinning beautiful.p.s. Your jumping kick reversals are beautiful
Inspiring! I'm curious what fuel your using for your poi? Some of the arm wraps you did, especially the wrap you did with those rope poi looked like things can get a tad hot. :P I've never done wraps with fire other than on my feet with shoes for fear of burns. The energy you put into your performances is amazing! Thanks for posting, you rock, keep spinning!
=D Hot! Really! Thats soooooo cool and I love the music!!!! I hope so much I will be so good like you any day! Cool, cool, cool!!! =) Awesome! Amazing! sooooo cool!!!!!
This is really great! Your footwork mixed with the flow of your skills is incredible. I'm about to transition some of these movements to fire nunchaku spinning. Most excellent!
oh wow i havent been this excited by fire dancing in sooooo long!!! thanks for the beautiful work you truly are an inspiration. i hope to see you live one day..... : )))))
Auditioning for Cirque happens now through their website. I give some advice for fire dancers interested in applying in a recent interview on the Home of Poi website. Developing a routine is another can of worms...have fun.
I will be offering a one week fire dancing retreat in Costa Rica, April 2-9 2011 for fire dancers interested in taking their art to the next level. More info here on my website.
Regarding Pr1nce333's question about staff specifications, as I was taught when I was 9 yrs old, a full size staff should come up to eye level for each person. For me that is 1.625 M. The wick on this staff was 6ft of 2 inch tape on either end.
That is so FRICKIN SICK! I recommend everyone not to try it unless your stupid enough to try it or trained. I was stupid enough to try it with a mop stick and i ended up with a red line on my face! :(
