You sound great, man. I have that same mandolin. Before you changed the pick-up, did you have an issue with the A-string being louder than all the rest? If so, did it help the problem, and what kind of pick-up did you put in it?
@imaginator09 To be honest, I am not sure. I am so sensitive to single coil hum that I did not hear much else. I can tell you that the new pick-up (Dimarzio Pro-Track) has no string to string balance issues. It is a sweet rig! I also repositioned the volume and tone controls when I had a new pickguard made and that was a nice upgrade! Good luck, it is a sweet mando just as they come!
Nice playing man! I really loved this video, and I have wanted an electric mandolin for a while now. But, I was wondering, what kind of amp does the km-300e use? Can I use a guitar amp, because I have a nice guitar amp and was wondering if that would not only work but sound good for this mandolin. If you know, thanks, and also speaking of music happy birthday to John Lennon. :D
Thanks, I appreciate it. Any guitar amp should work fine. Some will sound better than others. I generally like 10" speakers for mandolin but that is just preference. I roll the tone back quite a bit and the volume back a ways. Just experiment, you'll find a good setting. Let me know when you post your vid!! :)
Very nice demo ~ excellent tone I have a question I hope you can answer. Is the neck on this model perhaps a bit wider than some of the other electic mandos out there? If it's not too much trouble could you measure the neck at the nut and the 12th fret?
finally somebody who can play the instrument. Sir, I have sat through several electric mandolin videos where the person couldn't play it--what a waste. Lovely tone, lovely show.
Thanks Jim! That means a lot to me coming from a player of your caliber! Now if I could play this through your Super Reverb, all would be right with the world!! :)
Thanks, at the risk of sounding foolish... what was the first tune you played on this clip? Sounded great.. sort of Django-esque? Also I'd be interested in seeing you play some tenor banjo. Cheers! -nick
Thanks Nick! The tune is the first half of Rueben Sandwich by Jethro Burns. I just about have the second half down and will recod the whole thing when done. Have not decided on acoustic or electric. Great tune. Some tenor banjo is coming!
Thanks mandoniaa! Yeah the 5-strings are very cool but are difficult to get the low C right. Try a different amp on the mandobird. I would go out on a limb and say sound quality on a solid body electric is 25% instrument and 75% amp (not including the quality of the player of course!)
I've got several pretty nice amps. Mainly I think I prefer double-course strings on my acoustics. With a four or five string I could always turn on the Chorus fx. ;)
Hey, I watched some of your other vids, you're a really good player!
Bernie, I was afraid you wouldn't like the WSM tune! :) I'm kidding of course! I don't know if it has a top laminated or not. Could be solid but with binding. There are no sound chambers though. I think a fair number of folks tune it to uke tuning. At any rate they are a fun diversion. It will probably inspire different playing that I can move back to the Fern. That is my hope anyway! Thanks!
Sounds good. Reminiscent of the original Fender Mandocaster with 4 strings. I have to try it! Glad you liked my McTwangalot tartan. It's a car blanket not bedspread by the way. Just threw it on the sofa to add a bit of local colour.
WOW, I'm glad that you posted this. I wondered what they sounded like. I was told by someone who sold them that they had low E-string volume problem but that sounded pretty good.
tabs for the jazz intro?!?? :D

Rally cool! You sound great!
I'll have to buy one of those or something similar. I was thinking they were solid body but with that binding it looks like its got a top and back?
Love the playing and sound esp.the Monroe tune.
I'm particularly intrigued by the four strings sound -- much different from standard electric mandolin.
In fact, by defination a mandolin has four courses doesn't it? Maybe it should be called a soprano guitar or a guitarolin-- SMILE Love it.
