There are many non-English speaking vacationers from all over the planet who drive here, but this lady was singled out because she is Latino. I doubt that a French tourist would have been given the ticket for not speaking English while driving. There's not enough evidence to prove that racism was involved, but it seems highly plausible in this instance...

No, she won't pay this ticket. But 39 people who were cited for the same reason did pay the fine even though it should have been clear when they went to pay that the ticket was invalid. Everyone who paid the fine will be reimbursed, but their money should never have been accepted to begin with. For this to have happened to so many people shows that this is a big problem in that precinct. There are too many people in uniform who feel they have a right to make up their own laws & enforce them.

I have many Latino friends here in Florida. The younger ones learn English very quickly & assimilate easily. The older generation really struggles. That is not caused from laziness or an unwillingness to fit in. It is a problem with Neural Plasticity. WE all suffer from this as we age. It makes it MUCH more difficult to learn a 2nd language. WE cannot legislate that physical limitation away. The GOP can hold there breath until they are blue and that won't change our physical limitations.

Someone in the department had to be turning a blind eye to what was going on. They had to know what was going on when the first person went to pay their fine. The Dept should have corrected this after the first ticket, not 39 tickets later. This appears to have been department condoned harassment to me...

The shape and colors are universally recognized, so the words on the signs are ambiguous. Most people would know what the signs mean even if there were no words written on them...

I took Russian and Spanish in my 30s along with many others in my age group. NONE of us were able to master either language. After 10 quarters of taking these 2 languages, I know almost nothing of them. Learning a foreign language is not easy, especially for those learning later in life. I doubt that I could go to a foreign country and learn their language...

Yes, if FOX told you that it is illegal to drive and not speak English, then they lied to you. It wouldn't be surprising since FOX lies about a lot of things. If they told you there was such a law, yes, that was a lie. I doubt that that's the case, however, since--and again, anyone who watched the above story would know this--THERE IS NO SUCH LAW. I doubt that Fox would report such a thing, though, since it's just so flatly untrue.

Please watch the story and do some homework before trying to weigh in on it. It's clear at this point that you haven't even bothered to watch the story, let alone check your facts.
