Just upgrade to your iPhone 3G S from one of your eligible lines. Most people have more than one line. AT&T tried to prevent me from doing this by blocking people who have a family share plan from purchasing the phone. I literally had to remove this feature from my online AT&T account and then log back into Apple to purchase the phone. I purchased my 32 GB 3G S for $299 this way. Then I logged back into the AT&T site and readded my family share plan. AT&T :(, iPhone :).
I agree, AT&T has us ripe for the picking again! I don't like verizon (because like to lock down features on phones/as an previous customer of verizon). But open this market up to the free market and let AT&T battle it out with everyone. I would leave AT&T for a better provider if I had to.
It is not cool that you may have to pay more than a new customer or one that qualifies for an upgrade. However, one needs to realize that the carrier subsidizes a good portion of the cost of the phone. AT&T is merely charging the face value for the phone because you are not keeping up your end of the bargain.
thats a big load of crap, they make the contracts, the only way to not hold up your end of the deal is to not pay the costs.
AT&T is purely making a massive amount of money on this, people arent paying the face value, it doesnt cost THAT much to make one of these. Much of the money is profit and capitalism

The lack of features you are discussing are not related to AT&T, since iPhones on other networks (Rogers WIreless in Canada, T-Mobile in the EU, etc.) still lack these features. Many new features will be added to the OS 3.0 software that first and second generation iPhone users will also be able to enjoy. Apple had wanted Verizon originally, but the company refused to let Apple do things its own way.
