  • why did they make this sound almost exactly like "no salt on her tail"? .... i've never heard this one before .... don't get it?

  • Undoubtedly one of the best Harmonising groups in the entire world pity there wasn't as much genuine talent in todays music, Cass, John & Denny (R.I.P.) your music will live on forever

  • Very beautiful song

  • Did John Phillips ever sing any songs?

  • This has to be the GREATEST 'UNKNOWN' SONG that the Mamas and Papas ever recorded!! Denny and the girls just excel with this one. Just too bad that this song was not released as a single but only featured on this tv special. This group was so magical in so many ways with their voices and songs. And give them credit for surviving all the internal group problems while they made this memorable music in an era of music that can NEVER be duplicated again! Long live Denny, Cass, John and Michelle!

  • sends shivers down my spine- absolutely brilliant

  • lindas voces como siempre

  • GREAT.....you have a nice channel.i hope that you like visit my too.......

    GREETINGS FROM ITALY......CIAO

  • Was this song later to be called "No Salt On Her Tail", Mamas & The Papas are and were undoubtedly the best harmonising group in the whole universe.

  • Maravilhosaaaa musica!!

  • música realmente gostosa de se ouvir

  • so sweet

  • v dfv fvdfvb

  • Denny Doherty was a great singer with full of emotion in his voice, a beautiful tenor!

  • Oh my, Denny Doherty's voice could sing the birds right out of the trees.

  • Great song. Amazing how they could take a song from 1919 and make it sound like it was just written.

  • papa likes kin !!!!!!

  • HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  • missing John's baritone on this one

  • One of the finest groups from the era.

I knew someone who was the first drummer for The Mamas, studio and touring, who told me a lot of the personalities of each of the four members. Denny's singing is so wonderful, one of my favorites, along with Jon Anderson.

  • @SeattleLA were they kind? i know they really dislied each other

  • @xxChiQuiTitaxx73 Hello. Well, there were many troubles, plus the era caused most people to use drugs. They were great musically, but as you said, many problems within the band.

  • @SeattleLA yep thanks that's what i thought :)

  • This song reminds me a lot to No salt on her tail, also from them.Anyway i like both

  • totalmente hermoso recuerdo, yo lloro

  • An immensely talented foursome. What singing, what songs! Music like this only sounds BETTER as time goes on.

  • my god, cass elliot's vocals! so clear and beautiful! love this song!

  • The tune trully reminds me "No Salt on her tail"

  • Denny and Cass had a FRIENDSHIP. Denny and Michelle had adultery. The story is that when MIchelle told Cass about it, Cass was "furious" with her. Gee, I wonder why. Doherty had a great voice, but his songwriter was John Phillips.

  • 1) Michelle is so sexy

    2)Vocals are amazing

    3) actual talent

    4) good song

What else could you possibly wish for in a group??

  • great music

  • I love how Cass just kinda bobs along and fiddles around then just belts out :D

  • Denny's the lead, right? (sorry, I'm 14, kinda just started listening to them!) He looks just like my older brother!

  • @Rooblishus

Dude it's great that a 14 year old is listening to them. There is hope.

  • Listen to that beautiful voice...Denny Doherty!!!!!

  • Makes me long for yesterday.

  • He looked and acted like a crazy homeless dude, but Denny sure had a nice singing voice.

  • Absolute class. Beautiful, harmonic vocals. Lovely songs. They had it all. Timeless too. Certainly one of my favourite bands of all time. Mama Cass is my favourite singer of all time.

  • I'm very cynical about the nostalgic (& bitter) viewpoint seemingly endlessly aired on Youtube that old is great and current is rotten. A little investigation of facts will show that 90% of pop hits have always been tripe. Each generation remembers the glorious 10% with such love that they forget that even in the 60s Herb Alpert & "The Sound of Music" outsold the Beatles. However... groups as perfect as The Mamas & Papas today? Forget it!

  • I love this song so much!

  • music like these reminds of the good days :)

  • Thank you whoever you are.

  • Wonderful song

  • Absolutely unbelievable! Even more gorgeous than "No Salt On Her Tail'.. What are the odds that four people can come together with just the right chemistry, make music as timeless as this...and become legends.. The Beatles did it too, and so did many others. Just floors me that it actually happened.

  • Thanks to YOUTUBE we can remember the days when mainstream talent made really good music. Really, in days gone by people had to be talented to MAKE IT. Look at them, they simply sing, without having to resort to pseudo dancers all around them and make spastic moves while verbalizing words. All they did was sing with soul. These were artists not the clowns we have today.

  • It's been a while since you posted your comment...but you were right on target! Glad to know someone is out there who sees it like I do. Applause!

  • @slimshine953 Thank you for your words. Truly appreciated!

  • @eurodishco Ohh! It is so beautiful what you say, and it is real so! I love those wonderful, pure music, I love The Mamas & The Papas!!! What we don't find any more today, today there is no one to be compared with them...

  • @TheHappinessmusic You are absolutely right! Not one single pop singer of today compares to the groups of yesteryear. It is rather sad, is it not?

  • @TheHappinessmusic You are totally right. Today no one can compare because the music business is based on looks -- not talent. It is a shame, quite frankly!

  • @eurodishco That was so perfectly stated. Thanks.

  • @freeheretic111 Thank you very much! I truly feel that way. The state of music

    today is simply atrocious!

  • @eurodishco lol very true my friend :D i love this music ,& im from the after that era of the 1970's or 1973's but i am very oldschool myself . peace have a good year & life god bless you.

  • @darknightkiller39 Thank you my friend. I am from the 70's and 80's myself but I had been exposed to good music early on (different genres and all good!). It is simply horrible

to see what became of "mainstream" music. Best to you !!!

  • 2:08-2:12. Really really beautiful final.

  • They are amazing.

why cant people make brilliant music like this anymore.

  • What unbeliveable harmonies...you wanna form a band...learn from these guys...and the beatles!

  • totally agree!

  • Or if you just want to form your personality-

Mama and Papa know best, I do suppose.

  • Lindo!!!

  • hermoso *o*

    no me canso de verlo

  • Absolutely beautiful. ABC/Dunhill Records discarded all the original master tapes of The Mamas & The Papas, which is why this song is only available from the TV special source. They did this sometime after the 1970 collection A GATHERING OF FLOWERS , which had some outtakes & studio chatter. No original session masters exist anymore, as ABC/Dunhill actually threw out the Mamas & Papas original masters from their sessions.

  • This cut was not on the Gathering package. The only new music offered on that 2 record set was the studio take of Once Was The Time.

This was recorded for a TV special on Rodgers & Hart. The Supremes, Dionne Warwick and Simon and Garfunkle co-starred.

  • Been a fan since 1966 when I was 6. If you read my comment, I did not say HERE IN MY ARMS was on Gathering. I used to watch the Rodgers & Hart special at the TV & Roadio Musuem in NYC for years.

  • my mistake.

wish the whole special could be made available.

  • CAN SOMEONE PUT THE LYRICS,PLEASE?

    Thanks :)

  • i still like " no salt on her tail"; a more of an original piece than taking their own tune and putting it to a rodgers and hart, piece.

  • This can be found on the 4 CD box set, Complete Anthology.

  • Me encaaanta!

  • i LOVE this song!!!!

  • Thanks for this - one of my favorite cuts from them.

  • This is Denny at his vocal best and proves he can belt it out just like Cass. This flawless tune should have been released way back when. Lots of stuff going on in the background. You can see Denny's glassy eyes. Flirted with Cass and broke her heart. Slept with his partner's wife. What drama!

  • THESE GUYS RULE!

  • Was Denny doing hard drugs at this time? His face is so drawn and sunken in. He looks way to thin as well. If you look at the album covers, his face is much more chubby. I think this video must be from after he and Michelle had been discovered having their secret affair.

  • I agree. It would be around this time that he was depressed that Michelle dumped him in favor of returning to the group. According to the biographies, he was absolutely devastated.

  • More than forty years, and what we have now! Denny, and Cass and John looking in the screen, the people who died, i can feel that they are alive, that video is such an amazing part of M&Ps :)

    Christopher

  • so amazing!!!!!!!!!!!! thank you!!!!!!!!!!

  • FIY: "Here in my arms" is a song from an old Rodgers & Hart musical. The arrangement used here is similar to "No salt on her tail", but they are 2 totally different songs - different words, different melodies & different chords.

  • very beautiful!

  • I love this song!

  • "no salt on the trail" is far better from this version.

  • wow, such brilliant vocals and arrangements !

    merci P'M :)

  • never heard this song before.....a pity they were only together for 2,5 years...thanks mama cass & co.!!!

  • denny broke cass' heart.

he was teh best folk tenor

  • beautiful!

  • Saw this on PBS and bought the video. What a shame that there is only one member left. What a great, great group! Their star shinned for such a short time. I think they are in the hall of fame, if not, they should be. Thanks for this post, Grego

  • it's easy to see why denny gave cass "love bug"! love the way they do this song - so much ;-*

  • I just love Denny's voice. May he rest in peace. Can you imagine what it sounds like in heaven with the three of them. Jamming.

  • There great!! There voices are simply beautiful singing together. Great video...and so beautiful!

  • Was Cass pregnant here? , because she looks bigger than normal

  • I think so. But Owen was born in 1967. I think it's Her last months

  • I love this song and "no Salt on her tail" you can see that Denny is almost singing it to Cass. He had a great voice. RIP Denny

  • This song can be found on The Mamas and Papas Complete Anthology Disc 4.

  • I love this song, even better than "No salt on her tail"

  • This was turned into "No Salt On Her Tail", which is a much better song.

  • this is from the Rogers and Hart show 1968..I loved that show is it available on dvd??

  • The [upgraded edition] DVD, "CALIFORNIA DREAMIN", includes the songs, "My Heart Stood Still," "Sing For Your Supper," and "Here In My Arms," from the 1967 Rodgers & Hart Today television special.

It might be the only DVD available with these songs.

  • John is [ well was] my friend's grandfather.

  • What? Really? Who? Cool!

  • Yeah.

Her dad was one of the none famous ones but her dad's dad [grandfather] is John Phillips.

  • Denny could have had a better life if only he said yes when Cass asked him to marry her. After they went their seperate ways, Cass became a big star and Denny, well, basicly just sat in ruins until the show "Theodor The Tugboat" as the harbor master.

  • Poppycock! Denny wasn't in love with Cass in the romantic sense. Why should he not be honest with her? Would it have been better to take Cass for a fool? Use her? I think not.

Denny Doherty was a great guy. The Denny-Cass friendship lasted until Denny drew his last breath. Don't cheapen it.

  • @SigneAnderson Not to sound calloused, but I think you mean until Cass drew hers, she died in 1974. Talented, spirited lady gone way too soon

  • @SigneAnderson are you really Signe Anderson or is it just a cool handle? If so I gotta say I love Airplane Takes Off. It's amazing how similar sounding your voice is too Grace's. At first listen I just assumed it was Grace, before I got more into learning about the Airplane(I'm in my early 30's so I wasn't around when you guys were playin). One of my favorite albums! If you are Signe then Cheers to ya! If not then I must simply compliment you on a cool internet handle!

  • Like Barry McGuirre said "Denny had a voice like a birds in the tree..."

  • So where are the lyrics to this song [not the song "No Salt on Her Tail"]?

    great song

  • Look on page 3 below. There you will find the lyrics.

  • I like their version of this song the best. Love the round at the end with the girls too. RIP Mama Cass, Papa John, and Papa Denny.

  • I think Denny and Michele are still with us correct me if i am wrong Sure hope i,m not???

  • i hate to tell you but Denny died January 19,2007. i didn't even know he was sick or anything and found out he died. it's very sad. michelle is still here though. Denny was my favorite and still is.

  • Oh wow thats so dern sad.He wasn't very old either.I never really heard of him very long and now i feel so sad.Aint it funny how you can feel close to people you never met. Thanks for the news however sad it is.He was the best male singer i ever heard in my life..

  • i know what you mean, I feel really close to alot of people even though I have never met them. He definitely was a great singer!

  • yeah i teared up

  • What a wonderful music...

  • Blimey! I never knew that the Mamas and Papas recorded this song. It's a Rodgers and Hart song from the 1920s and I was searching for it here on YouTube. I've always loved it but the only recordings I've heard of it until now are by Lee Wiley and Ella Fitzgerald. The Mamas and Papas certainly make it sound lovely.

  • They performed it for this show dedicated to Rodgers and Hart, in 1967, but never recorded it. However, they did record these composers' My Heart Stood Still, Glad To Be Unhappy, and Sing For Your Supper. You can find them here in YOUTUBE.

  • Thanks!

  • That was groovey man, thanx

  • Great performsnce 5***** G.G.

  • Yah. My name is Doherty too !!!!

  • Thanks for posting this!

  • i much prefer this song to 'no salt on her tail'. this should have appeared on an album :(

  • I loved Denny then and I love him now and forever.

  • John used "No Salt" instead of "Arms" on the second album because writing credit is a powerful money generator.

John was a business man too.

  • This is probably the best song they've done!

  • I wouldn't say it's the same melody--just the same arrangement ideas applied to two different tunes.

  • This is on the califonia Dreaming video I love this

  • Their beautiful song No Salt on Her Tail was based on this song. Has anybody gotten a video of that other song?

  • Wow, I've never seen this. As always with the M&Ps excellent. Thanks for posting.

  • Re: request for lyrics,

Here in my arms it's adorable!

It's deplorable that you were never there.

When someone's lips are so kissable

it's permissible for me to ask my share.

Next to my heart it is ever so lonely,

    I'm holding only air,

yeah, here in my arms it's adorable,

It's deplorable that you where never there.

    [remainder is a repeat]

  • thank you very much for your time!

  • CAN SOMEONE PUT THE LYRICS PLEASE? i DONT SPEAK ENGLISH AND IT'S A LITTLE BIT DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND FOR ME.

    THANK YOU!

  • WHAT A VISUAL POEM!

I love that melody circle, singing "here in my arms" phrase at 1:48 (Michelle) and 1:50 (Cass) and the cam closing to Denny.

  • wow, I agree with MTDunn2!!! THANK YOU VERY MUCH!! Its the "No Salt on Her Tail." melody!

Great clarity. Wow. I dont have word.

    Sincerely thanks.

  • It's touching when Denny turns to Cass and sings "next to my heart". He certainly loved her as a friend.

  • Thank you for posting this! The clarity is terrific. I love this song ... it's too bad they didn't place it on one of the albums, even though the soundtrack is from "No Salt on Her Tail." This group has been such a part of my life that I can't believe that three of them are gone. Visually, the best views in this video are of Denny singing with Cass in the background. Love 'em!
