@small0but0mighty You tell him Mate! Why does he not develop something to destroy people instead like normal people. Can you believe the nerve of some people?
The "brick" wasn't radioactive, it was made of tungsten carbide. He was experimenting with a plutonium core, and dropped the brick near the core. Simply put, he was incredibly sloppy and killed himself. But did provide a lot of data on acute radiation poisoning.
@oracle2world He also didn't "go mad", he died in delirium from being drenched with morphine and having multiple systems failures, particularly low blood pressure. Nuke scare-mongering is one of man's least attractive aspects. This man, as you said, killed himself with clumsy stupidity. You can kill yourself many ways and none of them are pleasant.
First you should understand the different types of radiation that are involved with the 2 situations. Second who gives a fuck about this guy and Louis Slotin who also died from the same "radioactive brick" (I am still laughing at that statement you fucking nimrod) a few months later. The brick was Tungsten carbide and he dropped it onto a plutonium core (now nicknamed "Demon core") causing criticality.
you didn't mention the 246000 killed in both Hiroshima & Nagasaki which were a direct result of those experiments carried out by people like Haroutune Krikor Daghlian, Jr. and Third you should now drop a brick of Tungsten carbide on a plutonium core and receive 5.1 Sv of neutron radiation for your choice of music in this video
This is going on my Facebook wall... it's a sin that people can just ignore what is happening to those people in Fukushima... keep up the great videos...
So so sad... when will humanity ever learn?.... The local paper yesterday had a caricature... on the left it had "nuclear reactors" and on the right were "nuclear over-reactors" people like me... some things I would rather over-react over than under-react.... seriously... and this is definitely one of them... we just permanently ruined yet another patch of our beautiful planet, and that's only part of the tragedy...
@Zoink555 Its probably a very unwelcome blessing, like you sometime my borderline friend. Back to real reporting for you, I find it more shocking.....
@truthcrackers I could take you to work up the 32nd floor roof. Put you in the sun on a chair with a few cold beers. Right next to a few microwave dishes then you can fry from radiation in a few hours and not have to wait your 25 boring days. We got better quicker ways to fry you these days than backward 1945 people. Good huh?
@truthcrackers I don't think it'll be this bad for the workers. Daghlian recieved a truly massive dose, at a time when acute radiation sickness was poorly understood. We know enough to keep the workers from being exposed to quite that level. I'm sure they'll have health problems in the coming years, but not this kind of massive whole-body failure. That said, I still can't fathom the conditions (and states of mind) those guys are working through. Their countrymen owe them a huge debt.
@truthcrackers I'm aware that there's no treatment for acute radiation sickness, but these workers aren't being exposed that badly. I bet they'll all have cancer ten years from now, but most of them won't suffer the immediate bone-marrow loss and massive gastrointestinal damage experienced by Dahligan, Slotin, and the A-bomb victims. They're monitoring their exposure levels and working in shifts in order to avoid this specific horror. Not that cancer will be much better...

He didn't accidently pick up a radioactive brick.
He accidentally dropped a non-radioactive brick onto a pile acting as a neutron reflector, causing the Plutonium to go prompt critical.
"Truthcrackers"... how ironic.

@TheMattmg Good thing the goal of this video was not to satisfy your taste in music.
If you don't have anything nice to say then don't say anything at all, didn't your mom teach you that? Basic manners pal

This is a tragic taste of what is to come for the poor emergency workers. Surely we can do better to prevent this? Its a truly horrible death.
