simantra is a centuries-old instrument of greek orthodox church, a kind of wooden bells, presumable come in use during a prohibition of use of metal for the construction of bells.
Fantastic. This would make a great dance piece with the musicians in a circle around the dancers. I've been in workshops with Nick all week and he's been crowing about the piece.
I think I see contact mics on the simantras... is there any processing going on, or are the eerie overtones just the natural effect of the instruments and the hall?
@blaaarrrgghh there are contact mics in this performance, but they are only for amplification to bring out the "eerie" overtones, which are naturally occurring without processing. The soft wood, here it is Douglas Fir, produces very blurry harmonics, as opposed to a hard wood like Rosewood (marimba/xylophone) where the harmonics reinforce the fundamental tone. For this piece, blurry is good.... as you can hear. Thanks for watching!
Wow that was so amazing I almost fell asleep.
