  • i have a am2 mobo and i ccant be bothered to change it just yet as its fairly new so has alot of life left in it, ive been told that you can use a am3 processor on a am2 mobo i want to swap out my old dualcore for a am3 quad core, will this cause problems or will it work without burning out or what eva ? thanks.

  • rodney , please reply - i have ga-m55s-s3 motherboard (AM2 socket) and can i put into it am3 or am2+ processor?

  • @okol7 Yes you can. If you are putting an AM3 processor, you can only use DDR2 Memory Modules, even though they support DDR3

  • @HoLLYWOOD681 thanks for help :)

  • ok, so my am3 board has ddr2 ram. so can i use an am2+ cpu in it? or is my mobo am2+ to begin with? i really dont know. its what came with my pc

  • hey ! thanks, so...

    FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

    D:<

  • if an am3 cpu is ripped out of the socket with the heatsink fan by accident, does it damage the socket? also, if the cpu pins get bent and you bend it back in place, will it work?

  • thanks for the tip. almost bought a AM3 Motherboard and was going to use an AM2 CPU

  • Hey I got a question, I currently have a AM2 processor (Single Core)... I was wondering if a AM3 socket will work in my AM2 (940)? I'm planning on upgrading to a Triple Core Processor. Thanks

  • DDR3 comes in two flavors depending on your CPU/motherboard.

DDR3 dual channel, & DDR3 triple channel (for Core I7's only!)

While there is a huge difference in speed(due to triple channel) DDR3 at this very moment is NOT more expensive PER GIG!, stop complaining about DDR3 (dual channel) prices.

  • It's cheap as hell for the performance, quality, and longevity (because of the voltage) differences compared to DDR2. Also, DDR2 prices are going up. Stop buying that shit. Manufacturers don't want you to because it's outdated.

  • Well there might not be am Am3 with DDr2 atm. But that is not a reason of diff . btw AM2+ and Am3.

Vendors can push the DDR2 based AM3 since the IMC resides on the processor not on the Mb.

So please clear your doubts before calling someone idiot!

  • You should say for socket 1336 only as the new core i7's 1156 only use duel channle DDR3 as well.

  • Yea, I forgot about that.

  • Afaik ! Some AM3 has DDR2 slots too. So your ans. is wrong. The AM2+ has 940 pin socket design while AM3 has 938 making the former incompatible in AM3 based board.

  • Dude, you're an idiot. No AM3 motherboard has DDR2 slots. Those are AM2+ boards that support AM3 processors via BIOS. 3DGameMan is right, he just didn't mention the pins, which doesn't matter.

  • AM2+ CPU also has more pins.

Obviously, this question was asked by someone that is too lazy to go to Google.

  • lol false, AM2+AM2 AND AM3 are using the same socket. AM3 got 2 pins less, thats it.

  • plus some AM3 boards are using DDR2...

  • No they aren't. Those are AM2+ boards. ALL AM2+ boards support AM3 processors, but not the other way around! How hard is that to understand! 3DGameMan, I think you should delve further into the details to avoid all the confusion!

  • Can someone help me with this?

I'm wondering if Dual channel RAM is slower, same, or faster than triple channel RAM? thanks.

  • Triple channel is ONLY for socket 1366 (Intel I7).

I5, AM3 has dual-channel support which means that if you buy 3 memory "sticks" to a I5/AM# system you won't get full performance on the third memorystick.

  • I dont get it. ;O

  • Comment removed

  • i just visited amd's website and they said that an am2+ cpu is not compatible with an am3 motherboard, just visit amd(dot)com...

  • an am3 cpu has 2 less pins than an am2+ cpu..to make the story short, an am3 cpu will fit in an am2+ board BUT an am2+ won't fit in an am3 board

  • for some reason im thinking that am2+ cpu's work in some am3 boards... idk why im thinking that, correct me if I'm wrong plz.

  • yes your right i can put AM2+ and AM3 on my mobo. but only mobos that have DDR2 slots

  • thats what i thought, cuz i remember seeing and hearing about mobos that support am3, am2+ and am2.

  • yeah like mine =D it supports all cpus but no DDR3

  • correct me if i'm wrong but as far as i know am2+ cpu won't fit in an am3 board...

  • ok i am right now!!! hello

  • lmfao

  • It is sad that you put a new out of the box cpu in a old board but not the other way around.

  • why did you have to make a video on this question and not tell them?

i thought you were going to review the new corsair 800D case

it looks so awesome and clean omg!!!!!!!

  • lool noob try an am2+ board =)) sparks =))

  • My AM3 processor doesn't fit in an LGA775 socket what is wrong?! I had to force it in and now the damn thing won't boot up. The sparks are pretty, but I'm not sure it's supposed to be a feature. HALP 3D GAEM MAHN

  • lmfao fail lolz

  • lga 775 is intel and am3 chipset is 785g

  • dude what the F are you doing ... LGA775 is an INTEL SOCKET you cant fit AMD cpu's in Intel sockets......

  • hes joking

  • Now you are just being silly lol

  • Epic Fail i bet if Rodney read this comment he laugh his ass off

  • i really really really hope your joking right now.

  • i hate this compatibility shit, because if only want to upgrade your cpu (like i want) you need to buy new mobo, and new ram.

This is only made for gain money, so you cannot escape of buying it.

  • If you wanna upgrade a AM2/AM2+ CPU to an AM3, you can without changing your MoBo as long as you have an AM2+ MoBo, since the AM3 CPUs have both a DDR2 & 3 Controller

  • the problem is that i want to upgrade from a am2+ (amd athlon x2 6000+ 3ghz) to S775 core 2 quad, well actually a mobo change is unavoidable, but i mean, why the hell does not ASUS make a motherboard where the both types of sockels are possible.

  • Yeah now they are producting PCI E 3.0 and USB 3.0 for new mobos and GPU just for money if they make an uber PC they could close company and Buliding Rent for bakery so Microsoft Every few years post new OS and AMD and Intel to to smaller nm processors so it have new CPU socket with new memory in few years so they make H content so it takes more space on HDD so you need 2TB hdd and if you want a fast PC put two WD VR in Raid 0 or SSD in the end I is just for MONEY so Don't waste time for games

  • you got what i said, and i get what u say.

    nice reply.

  • this next question is a bit retarted

  • Ehm... the best reason why an AM2/AM2+ would not work in a AM3 motherboard is that they have too many pins to fit into the AM3 socket. If you force the AM2+ CPU into a AM3 socket you'll be bending pins.

  • the advantage of the core 2 cpu's. no memory controller, you could use any you want with the right mobo

  • That's why Intel rocks l,,l

  • Will an AM3 CPU work in a AM2+ Motherboard?

  • yesir.

  • but it works the other way right? an AM3 cpu in an AM2+ motherboard?

  • Yes ... ir works .. senseless, but it does ...

  • Not senseless. AM3 works with DDR2 and DDR3, but most importantly is that eventhough the AM3 CPU has fewer pins it'll still fit into the AM2+ socket.

  • Yep :)

  • socket 939 for the win!

  • Currently using AMD x2 7750 AM2+ in ASUS M4N78 M/B with DDr2 Ram. Board doesnt support DDr3 though.

  • Nice video.

  • every one it like

    "son of a bitch"

  • awesome!! thats my question :D

    thanks Rodney!

  • Yea I just built a computer for my girlfriend and we found an excellent couple of motherboards from Gigabyte off newegg with a very genrous price range, unfortunately they were AM3+ only from which I was going to install an older Quad Core AMD AM2+ 2.5 ghz Black Edition Processor, so sadly I couldn't get that nice motherboard :( but I did find a nice Gigabyte Board anyways for a great price!

  • However you can use an AM3 in an AM2+ motherboard with bios upgrade... i am doing that right now and it is rockin!!

  • The processors in the current line are all backwards compatable... the boards themselves are not.

  • I myself have a 955 (AM3 processor) in an ASUS M3A79-T Motherboard (AM2+)

  • theres also more pins on an AM2 processor than on a AM3 processor.

  • And that's solely to prevent anyone from putting AM2 cpus to AM3 sockets because the wouldn't work due to the memory controller.

  • If the AM3 motherboard support a DDR2 ram, then you can put in a AM2/AM2+ CPU.

  • but u can use an am3 cpu in an am2+ mobo:D
