I'd like to know if you can tell me what combination of pots (volume and tone are 500k?) are used in Andy Timmons' guitar.
I have a Fender American Deluxe Strat, american alder body and maple neck, and I put the Cruiser pickup in neck and middle. It look perfect! I read what you wrote earlier and I'll buy a Tone Zone S for the bridge position.
But I want to let my guitar with the same configuration of AT!
Great guitar!! the 24 frets sure are his cup of tea. Not often do you find someone who can actually make those extra 2 frets musical, but he knows how to find feeling in those two high notes. Also the Dimarzios are soundin awesome!
i always wondered if the artists use just regular factory pickups or do they get handmade pickups? I mean is there a difference between for example the pickups in petruccis or timmons own guitar and the ones i buy for 80 bucks in a random shop?
Every word out of his mouth is the absolute truth. I have been playing for 40 years. I've had lots of highs and lows in my musical journey, but this cat has succeeded to condense the entire quest for tone into a few simple statements. Listen up kids... not so much to his playing but rather the true passion for the instrument and the love of the art of playing guitar. That's it in a nutshell , passion. I wish I had heard this at 14, but them I wouldn't have cared. GO SEE BECK! You deserve it!
Im having a custom 2 pickup strat made right now (humbucker bridge and single coil neck) using the AT1 and the Dp187 cruiser.. I can not wait!!! My luthier is taking too long!
@dhumantorch Ain't that the truth man. AT performances are out of the world! Never been to a Jeff beck concert, so i cant compare, but Andy really is amazing!!
Awesome stuff, Larry. Andy has an extremely lyrical quality to his playing that throttles the heart strings. Now I'm gonna have to check out that Cruzer...
I'm really falling for this pickup combination in an alder body maple neck setup. Larry it makes me wonder how it would sound in a swamp ash body maple neck rosewood board set up?
It 's for an Alder body strat with maple neck and rosewood fingerboard and I was thinking about an alnico singe coil type for the neck position. Im asking that because a year ago I bought a Texas Special's set thinking it could sound vintage When I say vintage I mean very crispy high end with smooth bass response In that time I loaded the T.S on my late ash body strat with maple neck and fingerboard- I hated it! sounded extremely harsh and thin that could almost give me headache.
Hi Larry I've been searching for a pickup that preserves and enhance the vintage and crispy high end without been harsh that just the alder body can deliver. What would you recommend ? Im very into Hendrix's tones like Wind Cries Mary, Bold as Love and Little Wing
I'm not certain from your question which pickup positions you're asking about, and if the pickups are Strat-size or full-size humbuckers. Please email us a tech@dimarzio.com with a description of the guitar & we'll get you good recommendations.
Hi Larry, i'm struggling to decide whether i should get a pro track or chopper for my strat bridge position. I'm not into heavy stuff so i'm just trying to beef up my strat (basswood), could you give me some advice on the two pickups?
The Chopper is good if you want to retain some of the qualites of a Strat pickup. The Pro Track would be better if you want a pure humbuckers sound. Hope that helps you decide.
@geoff1121 I have a chopper in the bridge of my strat and I think its the best damn bridge pickup I've ever used. The tone is so good from all three that I dont have split, series, parallel, any of that stuff going on. I have a cruiser bridge in the neck (yeah timmons fan ;) ), fast track 1 in the middle and chopper in the bridge, I love the combination. It's perfect. Try it out ! Sean
hi larry..not sure what pickups to go for in my guitar? looking for andy's tone, have a setup the same two single-coil and humbucker in the bridge. i would like the neck to be a humbucker with single-coil sound and tone..thinking chopper or tone zone s.. the andy timmons humbucker or mojoe in the bridge, and a area 67 in the middle with a three- way toggle and a push and pull tone pot.. will these pickup work well with each other. thanks..
A Tone Zone S is not a good choice for the neck position unless you want a very thick tone. The Cruiser that Andy uses is much brighter. A Chopper should be better. The other choices should work with no problems.
The playing on this song by Andy is out of this world very emotive and listening to Jeff Beck had a great influence on him ! Andy Timmons can shred then slow down all in a very melodic way damm i wish i could play only half as good than him lol !
U can really see the passion when he plays ... Its like The guitar is talking w/out really saying any words ! (imo) I'm pretty sure his power & skills Are held in those golden locks of his !!! Lol
All jokes aside ! A-Timmons .... He fckn rocks ! He inspired me 2 pick the guitar again !
Wow.. He's really remarkable as a player and human being aswell. Thanks a million for putting theese videos up Larry! Really inspiring and makes one think about my own playing. Thanks!
Dear Larry- Say i wanted a humbucker version of the Injector pickup. Any recommendations? I have the Mo Joe installed right now, but I'm just not sure whether I want that tone from Paul Gilbert's red Fireman or not. I dont know how its going to react with an Ibanez S series.
Hi Larry, I'm using a Strat with three single-coil-size pickups. I am having hard time chosing a bridge pickup which sounds like the AT-1. I'm wondering if there's any single-coil-size humbuckers which can give me the sound similar to AT-1?
Excellent, really great Andy.I don't think the mic' up is too flash, it sounds muffled.Andy is right, Jeff Beck is the man, only Allan Holdsworth has ever moved me as much as Jeff.
Really sweet playing Andy, you are on the path to true greatness from what I can see here.
I'm a guitar player and wasn't impressed by Jeff Beck. It just sounded like someone wanking very fast? He was however the loudest guitar player I've ever heard! I think this guy sounds better IMO.
I can't give you a good answer without a more detailed description of the sound you want. Please email tech@dimarzio.com and list which Strat model you have along with the amp you play.
Hey, man. I have played all my life. I am 39 and just never seemed to be able to put myself in the right places to be able to make the transition from my day job. The skills aren't the problem. I am. Watching Timmons speak about being moved to tears by a piece resonated with me. I have that "ability" or open-ness to where I can let myself ride the same wave the Composer does. I realize now that everyone can't feel that. It is a dis-service for a guitarist NOT to share when they Convey Honesty
Mr. DiMarzio, would the same pickup combination Andy uses suit my MIM Fender Strat with it's alder body and 25.5” scale lenght (maple neck, fingerboard fretboard)?
An F-spaced AT-1 should be a good choice for the bridge position, but all 3 players use pretty different neck pickups, and you didn't say if your neck pickup is a full-size humbucker or SC-sized. Drop an email to tech@dimarzio.com with the info and we will make useful recommendations.
@madipta Any 2 pickups can work well together if they produce a sound you like. I cannot offer any opinion about whether you should replace either pickup without knowing what type of sound you are looking for. Please email tech@dimarzio.com with a description of the sound you want, which will allow us to provide useful advice.
Hi Larry, I have one question for you, I have a mohogany guitar and I'd like to use Dimarzio AT-1 as my bridge pickup, but I don't know if it fits cool with the kind of wood that I use. Could you please advise?
@neboloso1357 I have a mahogany guitar (Ibanez RGA32 MOL), I picked the AT-1 for bridge position, and I have to say that it was the best pickup chioce of my life. Great sounding, very tasty pickup, just a lovely one. Made my metal axe a truly versatile one. I paired it with a Breed Neck at neck position, that's a classic, pretty fat tone. They work together nicely both in humbucker and split coil modes. So I can confirm, AT-1 is a good choice for a mahogany bodied guitar.
Really amazing guitarist... I'm glad there is still a guitarist evolution going on.. He really blends different influences and mixes/ makes it into his own.
Happy Saturday Larry! Quick Q'. Do you know what kind of delay pedal Andy uses? I know he uses just about only bypass pedals so I assume he's not using a Boss Delay.
I've got a Washburn N4 and the stock bridge pickup (Bill Lawrence XL-500L) is just too trebly and harsh for my tastes. I'm going to put an AT-1 in there. It sounds like what I'm after. I'll post my results after installation. It may help someone else make a decision too. Thanks for the videos.
Hi Larry! I have one AT-1 to use on my guitar and I want use single pickup in the neck position. If I have install the HS3 or HS4 I feel much difference in gain/volume? I play hard/heavy rock.
@LarryDiMarzio i am about to put a d activator in my bridge, i know that if you put a d sonic upside down you get a different sound, is that the case for the dactivator or does it not matter
can you also post the performance of the song without the comments? it's a very nice performance and you can clearly see what he plays. It would be nice.
Thanks and congratulation for the pickups you make they're the best
Andy can play. So can Lukather. But check out the '86 (I believe) video of Lukather playing with Beck in Japan. That performance - and this one - are so over the top that they miss what they admire so much in Beck: the right note at the right time. And leave the right space . When you see the Beck/Lukather performance, Lukather recognizes wjem he finishes his solo and Beck starts jotsa single killer note that walks all over the 10 million just been played by Lukather. Go quality versus quantity.
I'm shocked... I can't BELIEVE I never listened to that song before, I was so into Resolution and Electric Gypsy and Carpe Diem, and Deliver Us, and Beautiful, Strange, and Super 70's. I've learned a lesson: if you like somobody's work at all, you are thereby REQUIRED to listen to their entire catalog, at least once, or else you risk missing out on something like this.
Clever guy, really. Beck, Luke, Carlton, great influences to have. Many guitar players, if not most, should focus more on how to make every note count, on the level of emotion involved in each and every note than on how fast (and stiff) they can play. Yes, beck, luke, carlton, timmons even metheny do make a couple mistakes but what beautiful MUSIC they make. Most other guitar players aren't worth listening to (personal point of view of course)
I really like both, Andy and Jeff. I saw Andy 2 years ago in Germany when he presented his gear and answered questions from the audience. But he also played about 6 of his great songs. This evening did cost only 7$!!! I never met such a great guitar player who really knows how important the connection between listeners and artist is. He was quite funny and did not become stressed by a lot of very simple questions.
Next month I gonna see Jeff playing in Germany. I am really looking forward!
I love the sound of Andy's bridge pickup, unlike most humbuckers beyond vintage output, it stays nice and smooth-sounding rather than harsh and pounding. Is that something to do with the way Andy had it made, or is it something in his setup?
Andy Timmons speaks from the heart and I think that this is what separates him from most guitarists. He plays with such soul and puts his heart into everything that he plays. Jeff Beck has got to be in the top ten greatest guitar players that has ever picked up a six stringed instrument. Thank you for allowing me to post this comment.
@LarryDiMarzio When you worked with Bowie, did you know Slash's mom Ola? She made his clothes back in the day. You guys probably ran into each other at some point!
Regarding Ola ... I don't recalled meeting her. I was introduced to David several times during the '83 tour but I did all my work with Earl Slick. In addition to all the early work on Slick's guitar electronics starting in '74 (Station to Station, David Live etc) I built all of Slick's guitars for the Serious Moonlight tour. The DiMarzio Cliplock guitar strap was also introduced during that tour.
@oruscry You can't find the original back tracks that he uses. Only him and Mike Daane really have it (maybe some other bandmates). There are semi-good versions of his tracks on guitarbt though
Such an incredible cover of his own song ... I love the new arrangement and variations he made, he has an incredible ability to express his music with his guitar .... unique
Im thinking about getting s et of True Velvets, but im not sure how they would do with high gain. is it a good choice? or i was gonna ge the TVs with a Fast Track 2 in the bridge. isthat a good idea?
TVs perform well with high gain, but you might want to consider humcancelling pickups to avoid the noise that comes with the gain. If so, you should check out the Area 58 for the neck and middle and a Virtual Solo for the bridge.
Questions. It seems that he plays the neck position alot. Why is that? Are both mid and neck pickups Cruiser(bridge)? Why do guitarist put the same pickup in mid and neck positions? Why do snickers taste so good?

I've got a Washburn N4 and the stock bridge pickup (Bill Lawrence XL-500L) is just too trebly and harsh for my tastes. I'm going to put an AT-1 in there. It sounds like what I'm after. I'll post my results after installation. It may help someone else make a decision too. Thanks for the videos.

Hi Larry! I have one AT-1 to use on my guitar and I want use single pickup in the neck position. If I have install the HS3 or HS4 I feel much difference in gain/volume? I play hard/heavy rock.
Thanks!!!!
EPV7th 1 year ago
@EPV7th
There will probably be a big difference in both. I think you will get better results with a Heavy Blues 2 (DP409) in the neck position.

Larry,
I love the sound of Andy's bridge pickup, unlike most humbuckers beyond vintage output, it stays nice and smooth-sounding rather than harsh and pounding. Is that something to do with the way Andy had it made, or is it something in his setup?
Best wishes and thanks.

I have been a fan of Jeff Beck since the early 70s and seen him live several times. He is one of my favorites.

@LarryDiMarzio When you worked with Bowie, did you know Slash's mom Ola? She made his clothes back in the day. You guys probably ran into each other at some point!
freaknbigpanda 1 year ago
Hi,
Regarding Ola ...
Hope that helps,
Larry

@oruscry You can't find the original back tracks that he uses. Only him and Mike Daane really have it (maybe some other bandmates). There are semi-good versions of his tracks on guitarbt though

which single coil would balance best with a paf pro in the bridge? I was thinking fast track 1?
Im looking to keep some 'strat chime' while balancing volume wise with the bridge.
nylonsteel 2 years ago
A Fast Track 1 should be good. EIther a Cruiser neck or bridge model (which is what Andy uses) should also be good.

@LarryDiMarzio And a Pro Track like on the new JS model? I love the sound, but I think JS changed FRED with Mo'Joe, am i right?

Im thinking about getting s et of True Velvets, but im not sure how they would do with high gain. is it a good choice? or i was gonna ge the TVs with a Fast Track 2 in the bridge. isthat a good idea?
mains711 2 years ago
TVs perform well with high gain, but you might want to consider humcancelling pickups to avoid the noise that comes with the gain. If so, you should check out the Area 58 for the neck and middle and a Virtual Solo for the bridge.
LarryDiMarzio 2 years ago
But i also want something that cleans up really well like the TV, do the Area 58 and VS do that?
mains711 2 years ago
Yes, they do.
LarryDiMarzio 2 years ago
Larry, what mic he's using 4 a cab?
bgtocak 2 years ago
Questions. It seems that he plays the neck position alot. Why is that? Are both mid and neck pickups Cruiser(bridge)? Why do guitarist put the same pickup in mid and neck positions? Why do snickers taste so good?
PrsFenderJackson1980 2 years ago
1) Andy switches back and forth among all 3 pickups, depending on the song & what he's going for.
2) They're both Cruiser bridge models.
3) Some guitarists prefer the same model in both positions, but some don't. It's all personal taste.
4) What about 3 Musketeers? They're good, too...
LarryDiMarzio 2 years ago
so really all three of his pickups are bridge pickups?
poulter5150 2 years ago
You could say that, although many pickups labelled "neck" or "bridge" perform perfectly well in other positions.

Out of the following pickups which would give me the most versatily? Super 3, Crunch Lab, or Paf Pro.
PrsFenderJackson1980 2 years ago
I'd go with the PAF Pro, personally. If you're looking for versatility, it's an excellent choice.

It depends on the guitar and amp you have, but in general it would be the Crunch Lab.
