I don't get why they have to cover their eyes though. Only one can freeze at a time because it's impossible for them to both look at each other at the same time, also, they can't see when they are stone so one of them should come back alive while the other stays as stone...

@PaladinswordSaurfang because there is a moment far beyond the speed of our eye when they exist - meaning that even with their speed the moment they are only being observed by stone eyes they look at another, turning them to stone and then that trips the rest of the 'circuit', so by the time they think to move, they're stone again, because the one that was stone, ceases being so long enough so see them. I presume that's the theory behind it.
