To correct the Haitian use of these terms, is to imply that they are somehow wrong. Haitians say "Nago" and call Ogun by the name "Papa Ogou". The system has evolved in Haiti...these Haitians are no longer in Yoruba land, so don't expect them to speak "proper" Yoruba.

Christianity was spread throughout Europe after the fall of the Roman Empire. People were simply forced to convert or be killed. During the 1800s and 1900s it was spread by Europeans. You must be out of your mind if you think vodou is a dying religion. The right thing to say is that it is a surviving religion; have been surving for centuries now. mass exterminations by the Church and the government, defamation by the international community, persecution from missionaries have failed. Many people aren't getting it; vodou is here to stay. It may "die" elsewhere, but in haiti, it will stay since many don't see it as a "religion", but a cultural practice.

Haiti's problems aren't based on Vodou. What has it done? In Vodou, all Creation is divine and therefore contains divine power, which can be accessed by practitioners. The core functions of Voudou are to explain the forces of the universe, to influence those forces, and to influence human behavior. Voodou oral traditions carry genealogy, history, and fables.
