Attacking midfielders sometimes have free roles and push to become support strikers in a 4-2-3-1 system.
The 4-4-2 system is obsolete BTW, you get a numerical disadvantage vs. triangular midfield formations like 4-2-3-1, 4-5-1, 4-2-1-3.
While with a diamond 4-4-2 you lose on the flanks if the 4-2-3-1 fullbacks and wingers/wide-midfielders triangulate with DMs
England (4-4-2 flat) and Argentina (4-4-2 diamond/4-3-1-2) being humiliated by the 4-2-3-1 shaped Germany showcased just that.
