It's because they used an updated version of the Halo 3 Engine, which is why it's called Halo 3 Bungie wanted people to know that its not a whole new engine like the other games.
The covenant didn't expect to encounter much resistance on earth so they attacked with a relatively small fleet. All the coventant ships got destroyed apart from the prophet of regret's ship which entered slipspace and exited at the next halo ring.
it's during Halo 2. You know the bit where you go over the huge bridge and later destroy the scarab. Then you go back to the ship and fly away just as all these ODSTs come down. And you play as one of those ODSTs.
The game takes place on Earth, at the beginning of Halo 2, you are playing as an ODST that is reamaining on Earth left to eliminate the brutes still here after Truth's slipspace jump that ravaged the city.
Impossible that it was reach. Reach (during the timeline) was the highest trafficked spaceport in the Galaxy. UNSC and especially ONI would have known about the Ark or even that planet for that matter.

Ok. I just watched the whole vid again more carefully and I saw the big Covenant ship doing a space jump. So this is actually set in the middle of Halo 2, and not between 2 and 3. I still think it's weird that the Covies don't have Elites on their team. That would have felt more old-school.
The whole Elite heretic stuff and the New Mombasa event is not in the same timeline. In the New Mombasa levels in Halo 2 you encounter elites, and so you do many levels ahead. The Elite dishonourable shit is far ahead, almost in the end.

There is campaign 4 player co-op online and FireFight (like horde from gears 2) that is also 4 player online. There is no new multiplayer, however you do get an extra disk with Halo 3's multiplayer on it.
I've never played left 4 dead but it's like Horde in Gears 2 or Zombies in CoD5. Enemies are organised into waves and each wave is harder than the last. Your team shares a number of lives that decrease when you die and respawn. You get more lives every 5 waves.
It is an open world so you're free to explore New Mombasa in your own time. You visit certain locations to trigger flashbacks to other ODSTs and play out small missions.

The online multiplayer for Halo 3: ODST is the exact same as Halo 3. In fact, Halo 3: ODST will ship with two game discs, one for the ODST campaign and the other for Halo 3 multiplayer. It will include all the map packs and 3 new maps. The only new multiplayer feature (included in the ODST disc) is the Firefight mode. This is basically a Horde/Nazi Zombie mode but Halo style.
Hope this cleared it up for anyone who's confused.

Did you listen to the Bungie Podcast released yesterday? Halo 3: ODST only took 1 year to make with a cut down team and they joked about releasing more like this every year. There is also Halo: Reach coming out in 2010

Sorry I was a bit tired when I wrote that last message, I can't wait for ODST it's gonna kick ass. According to Wikipedia they started development in March 2008 so I guess they have been on it for a bit more than a year, but that probably includes a lot of planning time.
Yeah it looks like Fire Fight is Halo's version of Horde, but can you play it offline co-op? I am sick of all these games only having online co-op. As far as I remember, the ODSTs weren't in Halo 1. You're thinking of the Marines. The ODST's are the ones in grey armour and the cool helmet.
