@jimbob471000 Well Jimbo, this is the Original Police Dog Blues, by Blind Blake. Sorry to say I couldn't find the Original Police Dog, but I thought a police dog is hot, so that's why he/she looks like a "hot dog"
@tomkemp4000 You are so right about the sound ! I have converted this song from an old 78:rpm and I do it as an amateur, so a lot of the original sounds disappears.
1) I play the old record on an old grammophone and record it to a tape recorder.
2) I take the tape and put into a newer Stereo which I can connect to my computer.
3) My program records.
So, as you see, its many steps and I loose a lot of the Original, but as a collector of old Blues, I'm used to bad recordings !
Blind Blake is one of the "Geechie" people. They occupied the islands from Cape Fear, NC, southward towards Jacksonville, Fl. They had their own language and culture,& he is one of the most proficient guitarists of any era.
@zedrein18 Yes, its possible if you collect for 40 years as I have done. I got a good collection after my Grandpa. He didnt like the records, his brother in US sent him and when he died,my relatives said. "Lets get rid of that stuff". I said, I take it all and here it is !
Hey kickingmule I have been reseaching for over 30 years and as far as I have been able to determine there is no real proof that Arthur "Blind" Blake (Phelps) was Florida born. No birth certificate has ever been found and also no certificate of his death either. If you have official proof that may have surfaced lately of his birth location please contact me, thanks. Jim VanDrisse
@jnorman111 Hi JMJ, we seem to have the same problem. Well, when it comes to facts about the old Bluesmen and Women its very hard to find correct information. I wrote Mr Blind Blake is Florida born, but I found it it in a book. Not to be trusted, so thats the way it is.
I say as you say, If you find out where he came from, please contact me.
I don't know.
OK, I know one thing for sure.
You have the kowledge about the Blues and I thank you for the comment as well as for listening.
@ralphcraddock Whowver you are listening to, its Mr Blake, who make the impression in his very good git-tecnique ! Sorry to say, many try to play like him, but as I always say, Originals are the Best !
This song was an unusual style for Blake, not hsi usual 2/4 rag, but folky claw hammer, with added boogie bass. His regular tuning in most songs was owered to Eb, simply to make it easier to play. BTW, he was also a very good pianist.
Pick issue: He used a thumb pick, and no other picks, but his finger nails. He also picked with all fingers amd thumb. He was the best, in a league of his own. Under-esteemed as a singer.
Effortless polished technique - sounding improvisations are amazing . We all will be imitators , but never equal one of the greatest rag and blues guitarists . BB b 1895 d 1937 Jacksonville Florida .
We can perhaps imitate, but we never get close to the original, BUT we can play the tune and perhaps have some fun and above all keeping the good song alive !
Some musician said that he think that Blake wore picks for his fingerpicking playing. I'd say that's true cause some of the songs he's done on the guitar you can hear a strong percussive sound which the picks are much louder than your bare fingers. Great video one of my favorite Blind Blake tunes.
Perhaps you are right about, Blake was using picks, but I think the sound depends on the guitar is tuned in an open D and open tunings always give a special sound. I'm not sure and I don't know, but
PERFECT. Always sounds like 2 people playing he is so damn good. I first bought this on a Biograph LP in 1969 which I still have and it NEVER gets old. PERFECT.
Nobody picked like Blake!
