If you think about, i don't really think hendrix was as AMAZING as everyone thinks, i like DMB more, hendrix may have had a lot of skill and soul, but i think dave has Plenty of skill and plenty more soul, and dave is a fucking poet have u hear his lyrics,
talent man, pure talent. carter, dave, the rest . . . what a pure musical combo. carter is the happiest drummer - love that smile! as for dave . . .damn!
It's in 9/8 but he's thinking of it as a slow 3. So, as much as 9/8 is the meter, thinking of 9/8 is much more difficult than a slow 3. It's also easier think of 6/8 with another tagged 3/8 which goes back to the idea of a slow "3".
dont get me wrong, i love dave man, and he is awesome guitarist, but John Mayer has some harder stuff such as Neon, and to be reall surprised, check out Blackbird by the beatles, it may shock you what a good guitarist McCartney was

No, Dave Matthews Band isn't difficult to learn. I've been playing DMB since i first began playing guitar, and its easy. John Mayer doesn't owe anything to DMB. He owes everything to Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimi Hendrix, Buddy Guy, Eric Clapton, Albert King, B.B. King (people who actually do something other then D to G or in Bm and they know how to solo). It's funny how people think Dave Matthews is some kind of musical god. When was the last time DMB wrote a good song? 1998? Maybe Busted Stuff?
The topic was not talent on guitar, it was riffing while singing. BTW, this is a drummer speaking, one of which grew up a few towns over from John. When John grew up on the mean streets haha of Fairfield, CT Im quite aware of his "roots". John is VERY talented, but as a song writer and in terms of independance through a fretboard while singing, he cannot match daves song writing structure and talent. Hence guys like Carter play what they do over DMB tunes and Johns drummer keep rock beats.
granted dave isnt a hendrix but if you play his shit you should know dave doesnt actually play chords he basically makes up his funky rythems and mayer has stated numerous times dave is one of his highest influences get your shit straight
no chords in a dave matthews band song? really? besides for a handful of songs with these "funky rythems" you speak of (what would you say, ryhme & reason, satellite) most dmb song use quite a bit of chords. like bartender, lie in our graves, two step, #41 (live), ants marching, granny.
Mayer has also stated numerous times that SRV compelled him to pick up a guitar and he's the guitar player today because he isn't Hendrix.
Never said i didn't like DMB, i don't like a lot of their new stuff.

This is absolutely one of the most magnificent displays of musicianship. This, RIGHT HERE is the epitomy of excellent music.

carter is the best drummer out there today, hes unreal
stateradio017 4 years ago 4
No kidding! Nobody can play more complicated guitar parts while singing. I'm lucky to switch between a G chord and A chord without screwing up.

Neon is one song, daves entire catelog is almost as complex as Neon. JM owes his life to DM.

Neon is really not all that hard to play imo. I would teach someone t play Neon, before Rhyme and Reason or even What would you Say.

Carter improvising in 9/8 in the chorus.
Preety impressive (like he always is)

He does a good job of it and still keeps solid time. Tough to do with odd time signatures!
Alwayzsmilin 4 years ago
i don't think it's 9/8...
i think it's 6/4 with triplets on each count...
drum beat is more like 3/4 but then dave's singing is in phrases of 6 counts.
