  • great job! nice video

  • Nice job guys. It's so nice to see videos that actually give us practical usable visuals that touch on technical and basic uses with end results included. Thanks greatly appreciated. Keep up the great work!

  • @CAJUNNSC Thank you really much!

  • Sehr gut gemacht! ;) Weiter so

  • Supper, very nice!

    tnxx :)

  • a lot of information.

    thanks!

    ^_^

  • great video. thanks for sharing :-)

  • Wow awesome photoshoot! congrats!

  • cool ....

  • What do u find yourself using more for photoshoots.. the 14-24 or the 24-70?

  • What tripod was used for the lights?

  • love the photo at the end! Really coool!

  • good quality photos man! i love it!! ........ okay ....honestly i just finished the vid. coz the model is cute LOL

  • You have some cool videos man, easy watching!

  • @HeathHoldenPhoto Thanks! :-)

  • Wow I have found THE spot to come and learn. No obnoxious talking, tasteful music and models and a very simple way of showing what you do. Love what you are doing and the results.

  • nice shots and good work in showing us behind the scenes and the set up you used. very nice

  • Really love it!!!!!!

  • Nice

  • Your simple setup in contrast with the beautiful results makes the whole thing looks so easy ;)

But why do you use the stofen diffuser inside the softbox? I would have tought it counter productive. What are the benfits?

  • @duchatp1 It's not from stofen but the original one from Nikon. The reason is simple: The more you spread the light befor it hits the inside of the box or umbrella, the softer is the all over output. You can easy prevent hotspots with this solution...

  • Muito bom:D

  • the picture at 4:22 is pretty awsome !!!!

  • @vadimkimphotography

Pocket Wizards allow only manual mode (until they release the new FlexTT for Nikon) so you have to set the flash manually

SU-800 allows to trigger three groups from the camera (A,B,C) in iTTL or M (even mixed) and to make changes at the SU-800. In opposite to PW you can use iTTL and change the intensity of the flashes directly from the camera.

A SU-800 is nothing different than a SB-800 or SB-900 as a Master on your cam...

  • what kind of bracket do you use to fit 2 flashes on one stand?

  • @roger767 As mentioned two times before in the comments: It's the Morris MTH-203 Umbrella Tilt Head, attached on the Manfrotto 420B Boom Stand. ;-)

  • @vadimkimphotography You need a line of sight between the SU-800 and the SB-900. The SB-900 was on the top of the stairs and couldn't see the Master so I had to use M-Mode and Pocket Wizzard. Cheap triggers like Yongnuos (great tools!) will do it also...

  • are u using high speed sync for this shot?

  • Are u using high speed sync for this type of shot?

  • @stan5088 No, I used normal sync times up to 1/250 (you're not abel to use a faster sync with normal pocket wizards)

  • Where did the model get that black jacket??

  • totally luv the last photo~ great work dude!

  • @770827 Thank you! :-)

  • nice video :) and I liked the pictures very much :D

but i am wondering, what is the setting on your camera in some of the pictures? :) shutterspeed and Iso and this things :)

  • @MrAbfin Thanks! But sorry, I didn't remember the settings. I think I took them in M with a time up to 1/250s (because of the limited sync time) and used an equivalent aperture...

  • Now time to photograph the girls please ! You live in a country with fine raw materials in my experience :) I need to visit soon with a Nikon D3 to capture the beauty, cheers from London

  • @borderlord Hehe, I agree... But take a look at my other videos, there're some really nice and beautiful girls too ;-)

  • very good , i like it!

  • wow.. nice photos!

  • Congratulations!! very good video

  • You said that the SB900 is too big, too big for the Lastolite EZbox?

  • In this vid I used the EzyBox Mark 1 where the new bigger foot of the SB-900 doesn't fit. With the new actally version there are no problems!

  • I'm looking to invest in a light modifier, I like the Ezybox, and was worried my SB900 wouldn't fit after watching your video. Great vids btw.

  • Thank you :-)

They modified it some months ago, so be carefull to order the new version otherwise it will not fit!!!

  • @simonsenphoto Are u using high speed sync for this shot?

  • Hey.. .you did a nice job with this... old buildings offer endless lighting opportunities... your portrait quality is fantastic... I wish you continued success with your Nikon gear. Thank you for sharing...

    Frederick Dunn... a fan

  • Very Very Nice Cam Great

  • @all:

Thank you, I'm glad you liked it :-)

More videos in my videostream or you visit me at flickr (simonsenphoto). There're a lot of BTS-Photos with explanations of the setups.

  • Fantastic shots!! This video really inspired me. I wanna se more! :)

  • I just learned a lot from that video thanks so much.

  • thanks for the vids. really taught me a lot.

  • Really nice, that bracket was used to mount two flashes in the umbrella?

  • Yes, thats good for a better light from the sides (no hotspot in the middle of the umbrella) and better recycle times when using closed apertures...

It's the Morris MTH-203 Umbrella Tilt Head,

  • GREAT

  • Is that the Manfrotto 420B Combi Boom Stand? And what attachment exactly were you using to mount your speedlights? Great shots by the way. Really like the location.

  • Hi,

sorry for the late response: It's the Morris MTH-203 Umbrella Tilt Head, attached on the Manfrotto 420B Boom Stand. But after some uses I changed to the Avenger C-Stand (Manfrotto ACLB2033). With it it's esier to bring the light over people and it's more stable...

  • Thanks for the response. I have been debating on what I am going to get. I want something that is of reasonable weight and size for on location shoots using speedlights and possibly 5.7 pound Elinchrom Heads. I think i may just have to invest in two stands.

  • I bought two C-Stands from Manfrotto after some shootings with the Manfrotto B420. They are great, holding my Quadra with Softbox well and are very stable but lightweight.

The main problem with the 420B for me is, that you can't put them over 45 degrees. So if you want to use some light above the model you have to extend it to the maximun - and then it's very instable. I had have problems with one umbrella and two SB-800 on it in the maximum position.

I hope this make your decision easier ;-)

  • i'd give you three thumbs up if i could!!!! i really love your lighting and everything :D i hope you dont mind if i try some of your idea ;P

  • this is wonderful stuff

    Well done

  • I had to smile when it said 'His first shooting'.

    Peter 8-)

  • Great job, creative and well done, great vid!

  • Love it!

  • Hi,

there is not many post-editing because I'm not the Photoshop-Guru and always trying to make good Photos at the set and not at the screen... ;-)

I just corrected in Lightroom a little bit Contrast, Saturation (I always shoot in Natural Mode with the D3 because it's easier to increase than to decrease Saturation in post-processing), Vignette, Clarity and Fill Light if neccessary. No brushing or masking.

    Hope that helps you.

  • Thank you all, next Video is in process! ;-)

  • Very nice shots.

  • very good pictures...nice eye!!!

  • a vey nice video! thumbs up.

  • Great video loved it good ideas!

  • I LiKe It..

  • great lighting!

    u give me some ideas!

  • Hey man I remember this background music!!!

  • Excellent!!!

  • Stefan,

well done - congrats on your 1st video!

  • Regen - gib uns was Regen! :)

  • Well done. Appreciate your sharing.

  • Thanks for sharing. Great video, and really nice lighting. :)

  • good job.

    sitbonzo

  • Unless you edited it deliberately with different order or emitted some of the process, how would you know what the light would be on your subject without testing with him in it? Especially with the bounce. Did you know you would need the bounce while setting up the overhead light?

I'm just intrigued, great work though!

  • Hi, as written above at 4:28 there was no use of the reflector. This picture was taken before the one at 4:05 and I reordered them for the movie, because unfortunately I had not enough raw video footage from this (we placed the cameras with gorillapods and let them record, but it was limited to 10 min per file). I tested the light with these at 4:28 and felt, that the shadows were too heavy. But this is so exciting about photography: to solve problems ;-) Hope this answered your question...

  • I began to work with more than one flashes abot nine month ago (before I've used only one on-camera-flash, sometimes with a ttl-cord, for press-photography). Over the last months I got some experience how the light will fall, but always try to improve the light. Pixels are free, so you can test without costs ;-)

  • AMAZING! You're great photographer!

  • Dude! great first vid!! Thanks a lot for posting- this was amazing.

  • Very helpful! How much of the final photographs have been photoshopped or are they as is?

The last shots on the stairs...did you bounce the flash off the reflector?

  • Did some fine tuning in Lightroom for clearness (for softer skin) and white-balance. And adding a slightly vignette to some of them. But hadn't to do much, very nice results out of cam...

  • I used the SB-800 with a Lastolite-TriGrip 8-in-1 with silver side after i recognized too deep shadows below the chin. I bounced the SB-800 into the reflector. You can see the result in the first picture at 4:05 (see the silver shimmer at his left side). At 4:28 there is no reflector used - you can see the different... Hope this help you!

  • Thank you all for your comments.

If there is something I should explain in my next videos I will try...

  • Great video. Please mention the make/model/manufacturer of the dual flash mount for the SB-800s. Keep up the great work.

  • It's the Morris MTH-203 Umbrella Tilt Head, about 25 bucks

  • Thx for the info. Again, very good video and resulting images. Keep up the good work.

  • very nice, i like the result. learned a couple of things from this. thank you!

  • nice

  • とてもよいねですね いい映像です
