I saw him live in Austin a few times... once in the Paramount Theatre, before he got much nationwide acclaim, but it was practically like the Beatles or U2. The place went absolutely nuts. Not an empty seat, and rarely was anyone sitting. A monster talent.
its actually simple. all you need to do is fret a string or a chord, and then you slap the strings where that note would be 12 frets higher than where you are fretting. so if you had a G major barre chord on the third fret, you would slap the strings up around the 15th fret to make the harmonics.
I would guess Eric is hitting about 11-12 notes per second in the alternate-picked passages. But he is so accurate, and so good at emphasizing some notes with slightly more power than others to create unique phrasing, that he sounds faster than he is.
In this he resembles the pianist Glenn Gould, who was also just amazingly articulate. Malmsteen (who has similar gear) also has this trick down well, although he uses economy picking and is faster than Eric.

yea i read somewhere that eric was around the 12nps area. thats some decent speed. and with 2 note per string pentatonics id say its pretty good.

Nice version, but the one from his ACL show in 2001 is better I think.

You've got it right. It's all about personal preference and what YOU enjoy listening to. Music is NOT a competition or race to the finish line.

Eric is way better if we are talking technique. his pentatonic runs are pretty unbelievable!
I'm not saying Satch is bad by any means! But i enjoy Eric's music more than i enjoy Satch's.

Satch is great, but EJ destroyed all comers on the G3 dvd.
