Fuorest Gump goes to Mars! Say it ain't so! I would love to see Out of the Silent Planet made into a film, but I feel there are very few filmmakers up to the task Also, it would be a cerebral film - relying heavily of visuals. I think Tarsem Singh would be the perfect director, with Tom Hardy as Dr. Elwin Ransom - though Tom is a tad younger.
1) The actor who plays Ransom needs to be able to carry much of the film on his own. Tom Hanks has done that a few times. He's obviously not the perfect choice.
2) I made this quickly (in a couple afternoons) and I needed clips of the same actor that showed the "walking tour" (Forest Gump) part from the beginning and the "stranded in a strange land" (Castaway) from the middle.
While I do appreciate the use of clips from Serenity, they're not all that accurate. I'm sure you're aware of this since you are obviously a fan of the book. I could see Caviezel being a decent Ransom. The thing to remember about these books is that the character of Elwin Ransom is based on JRR Tolkien. That's the place to look for inspiration for that part.
I would love for a movie to be made of that trilogy, BUT...I think the trailer you did for it is totally unsuitable :( It's kind of cheesy and thriller-y, rather than fantastical and enchanting. Action, and loud fast music would not do Lewis's ethereal description of the planet justice.
I wonder if Lewis based his "John Wither" character on John Dee, the occultist who created Enochian Magic. Anyway, this trilogy desperately needs to be filmed. The story, rather than the supposed Christian themes, is incredibly interesting, and sounds more like it could be ancient prediluvian history than the future.
I can't wait until they bring the whole Space Trilogy to the screen. Tom Hanks would make a good Ransom, but I'd rather see a native British actor get the role; a young Peter OToole would have been ideal, but Billy Boyd (a Scot) would be interesting.
Ransom could be portrayed by Tom Hanks, Adrian Brody, Joaquin Phoenix, possibly Johnny Depp, Christian Bale, Henry Ian Cusick (Desmond from LOST), James McAvoy (definite possibility if they wanted to make the Ransom character younger)...
I was thinking of Joaquin because he has this natural quietness of him in real life and in the characters he portrays. And yet at the heart, there lies the courage, determination, compassion, and life just waiting to be released for the right occassion. Adrian also has this and he's just a great actor! He was wonderful in "King Kong".
you could not think of worse people to portray Ransom. the total lack of thought here truly surprises me. if you really read the books none of these choices would make any sense. Ransom begins as a quiet, mousy, English professor who is essentially undistinguished by any great element besides the things that happen to him. go back and think again. perhaps no one should make an cinematic adaptation of the Space Trilogy with this sort of thinking around. jesus christ.
Well, then, who would you select to portray Ransom? Your opinion is just as vital as everyone else's. I would like to hear who you believe would best befit the role of Ransom.
Who also would you get to direct the trilogy?
Remember, we are only making hypothetical suggestions about people, nothing permanent.
This was great. I would love if they were to make a live action movie and I wouldn't be surprised where Walden Media got the rights to Lewis's other works The Chronicles fo Narnia series and the Screwtape Letters.
They would have to embellish somewhat on Ransom's adventures on Malacandra if they wanted to make it a little more interesting. I thought it was great overall but it would need something a little extra in the story retold for the screen...
And must say how excited I am for the "Dawn Treader" being filmed right now. And soon to come "The Silver Chair" in about four or five years probably.
The spaceflight scene, if done right, could be spectacular. Some of the concepts that Lewis describes are so ingenious. You don't need a lot of action to make a good movie... a great story such as this would suffice.
Hey that's great!! Tom Hanks is definitely the best ransom. Right age and all that jazz. And I didn't think the music was so unfitting. It could have been more techno tho. <3Forrest<3
THIS SUCK!!! It's just clips from serenity forest gump and some other film!

I'm pleased with the discussion here.
A couple notes on why I chose Tom Hanks

2) I made this quickly (in a couple afternoons) and I needed clips of the same actor that showed the "walking tour" (Forest Gump) part from the beginning and the "stranded in a strange land" (Castaway) from the middle.

Tom Hanks as Elwin Ransom? No, just...no. Jim Caviezel, on the other hand...now that has potential.

I think you should use the song by King's X "Out of the Silent Planet" as the trailer

@MAZZ0Murder .Anything they would do in Hollywood will be a travesty due to the clear anti-christing sentiment prevalent in the movie industry

I want them to make a movie out of this whole trilogy. THESE BOOKS ARE AMAZING.

Great comments on who should play ransom. Nice trailer too. Ariel pink should do the soundtrack though!

nice, you've done some thinking on this. I especially like the Joaquin Phoenix and Adrian Brody options. Great list.

I can totally see Tom Hanks as Ransom, tho Demons from Lost would be a cuter, handsomer alternative. Greta job :)

this is why I liked the Adrien Brody option.
Joaquin Phoenix would have been a good option if he hadn't gone bonkers.
what about Ralph Fiennes?

Adrien Brody. PERFECT. RANSOM. I can picture it.

Serenity, Forest Gump, and Castaway. Tom Hanks would make an awesome Ransom! But the music is kind of inappropriate, nice cut up though.

you got the idea!
there's a couple other movies used (and some stills), but you got the main ones.
