Diana Ross was nominated the same night and lost to Liza Minnelli also for 'Cabaret' But in the video of Liza winning, Ross wearing a completely different outfit to the one in this video! I wonder Why???
Joel Grey was Anthony Newley's standby in Stop the World I Want to Get Off and for many other stars in many shows. It is wonderful that he was finally acknowledged for his talent.
@ps3fan4life007 Probably he would have if they hadn't divided the voters by nominating 3 cast members. It was a dumb move that I can only assume reflects the egos of the actors. In any case, Grey was great so it's all good.
Should have been Caan for best supporting and Pacino for best lead. I mean, Joel Grey was excellent and he's a hell of an actor, but Caan deserved it more...and Pacino wasn't supporting on the Godfather, he was lead.
@Jenna10227 I was just flicking though looking for cabaret songs for a project im doing and just clicked my way here and and was going to coment on Robert Duval's face looking disgusted as though he though it was his by right and when he clapped if thats what you can call it ,i think he'd of rather of had his arms torn off at the shoulders than actually applaud a better performer in that paticular time and place but that was real distane on his face,
Id've considered both Pacino and Brando in the leading role, and Brando deservedly won. If Pacino was supporting, I'm in two minds over whether Joel Grey deserved it more or Pacino did. But it all worked out, they're both Oscar winners now.
He was absolutely brilliant in Cabaret. He totally deserved it. Amazing actor. You can tell how good he is just looking at this footage. Ultimate proffessional.
All the other nominees except James Cann won best actor oscars later and one of the presenters James Coburn was to later win a best supporting oscar. Joel was outstanding in Cabaret.
Robert Duvall looks mighty pissed. What a delusion if he thought he should have won. This was a one person contest and the Academy made the right choice.
What most don't know about Joel Grey is that he played Chiun, the marshall arts teacher for Fred Ward in Remo Williams. Yes the little Chinese guy that could do anything.
I met Joel Grey by chance one time. He was seated in front of me at a performance of Beauty and the Beast on broadway. I saw him when we first sat down in the theater and remember thinking he looked awfully familiar, but (LOL) couldn't place a name to the face. Before the end of act one it hit me and I felt like an idiot. I introduced myself at intermission and asked for an autograph. He was very gracious and we talked during the entire intermission like friends. He was there for Tony voting.
I cannot wait until next year when Joel Grey comes back to Broadway for the revival of Anything Goes! He is SOOOO amazing and I am extremely happy that he won the Oscar!
Only 1 of 7 actors who won the Tony and the Oscar for the same role!
Oh my God, I LOOOOVE that Joel Grey won - he was fantastic in that part! And I'm sorry, but he's so adorable! He's just the sweetest guy, and his character was such a slime... this time the Academy got it RIGHT!
I think Pacino really deserved it, but I did enjoy every second Joel Grey was on the screen for Cabaret. He was even named, I believe they named him "Master of Ceremonies" in the credits. lmfao.
Did you notice Robert Duvalls expression right when they announced Joel Gray? Looked mighty pissed,,hahahaha. Joel and all the Godfather guys deserved it.
@gws51284 um Duvall has been nominated several times since then and won. But just incase you already knew that, there is talks of him being nominated this year for his performance in Get Low.
@gingerbreadcorpses He also has won a Golden Globe and a Tony, and has been in plays and movies throughout the years. He recently published a book of his photography. His career HAS gone somewhere.
First comment : Thanks for posting this clip, I guess the three 'Godfather' nominations cancelled each other .out .. Al Pacino should've been nominated in the Lead Category, James Caan would've probably won (he looked fine in this clip, by the way, smiling and fair play, Duvall looked so tense, he sure was disappointed to lose ...) I liked Joel Grey in Cabaret, but in all due respect, it's nothing compared to the performances of Vito's three sons
MISS Ross was a throwback to old time stars like Crawford. Check out that outfit! Now go to Liza's win later that night and see Ross in totally different outfit!! One thing for presenting, another for winning!
ill never be able to figure out how joel gray won this. i can't recall any moment in his performance that struck me as 'well acted.' he was eerie in it, but really, he just sang and dance and smiled. did he even speak once?
Dude. You know he is a BOSS because he beat Caan, Duvall AND Pacino for the freakin' GODFATHER!!!
