I was there in 1968 and got sunstroke... kept me in-doors for a month afterwards. I was 13 years old and it was awesome, but no water fountains anywhere. The cars were so cool, and loud!!! Jim Hall's Chaparral raced but I didn't know who he was back then, but he had the coolest car with the rear spoiler over the back of the whole car, totally radical design back in the day. Thank you for the footage with this machine.
Whaow this thing must be an adrenalin rush! Awesome. Wonder how times compare with the modified touring cars, anybody know? My guess is, this is faster? I'm just curious, I've not followed racing for many years.
dont know who the driver is?he certainly by his lines and fluid style can drive but is he only giving about 70%?maybe its just a warm up.or the fact the car is irreplaceable
The sound of the big block Chevys hammering out of the Cork Screw was unlike anything you have ever heard in racing....that small block sounds good, but does not compare to the 500+ci big blocks......and then came the 930.It was fun.
This is absolutely fantastic. I just can't get enough of that sound! It's just such a pity that all racing formulae are down sizing and adding forced induction to cars all in the name of emissions. I'm just so distraught that the best racing formula of all time happened 25 years before I was born and about 6000 miles from where I live. I've seen lots of great race cars in my time but this is the one craving that I want to satisfy. The purest racers on earth driven by true greats.
Thanks for posting that great video. I have run my track-prepped tubo MazdaSpeed Miata at that great track a couple times and it is indeed a great thrill. While watching the video I was struck by the incredible acceleration of the McLaren M6 off the corners, but am frankly surprised that the corner speeds do not appear to be much if any faster than the well setup SCCA Spec Miatas I ran with on that track in 2009. However, what a great rush it must be to drive the McLaren M6 on that track.
This video is good for showing real life vs video game. in Videogames you can go much quicker but in real life around this track there is much less grip esp when dirt is dragged onto the circuit.
This has got to be the most awesome sounding V8 I have heard in my 58 years....This thing has more “ANGER” than both of my Pit Bullterriers put together.... These "whining" V8's of today just don't cut it.... this is how a “REAL V8” should sound….
If that monster had some real brakes on it it would be a lot faster.
Check out the 'Toyota F-1 At Laguna Seca' video on YouTube where they turn a 1:06 lap. The accleeration isn't too much different, but the braking is night and day different.
Whats it like at the top of the corkscrew? Do you get used to the neg. G's and is it difficult to enter in a consistent manner? Thanks for the videos I really enjoy them.
@10mak01, You get used to neg or positive G's fairly quickly, not really any negative G's at the top of the corkscrew, it flattens out fairly gently, the "line" is pretty straight into it, but the track veers right, you just cross the track right to left, then enter the turn. I think the main goal is to not make it a sharper turn out of it than it is.
I don't care what you were doing the sound is awesome. At times the exhaust note is close to the sound the Porsche had that McQueen drove in Le Mans. Great job. Some times better than s_x. pn60ca
Chevy power, baby. Sounds great! Chevrolet provided engine support for the McLaren team back then, 7+ liter big-blocks. It sure gets around Laguna quick for a 41 year old design! Thanks for posting.
Some years ago that was put to the test when a games player was pitted against former pro racer Tiff Needell at Brands Hatch in England the Games Player came out on top and Tiff was heard to be muttering something about locked differentials as he went off with his tale between his legs :-)
The brake bias was set way too far to the rear and is not cockpit adjustable. It was VERY hard to get this car slowed down without locking the rear tires and looping it in every braking zone.
Great driving, love that big V-8 power and sound. Are moveable rear wings allowed any longer ? Like the Chapparels? Or, are they required to be in a fixxed position? Thanks for the live video. As for the arm chair wanna-be drivers,..... when you OWN a race car.... bring it to the track and SHOW US WHAT YOU GOT ! Save your cheap, no-show comments for your friends in the GARAGE !
So proud of those Kiwi boys in the Mclarens. Denny is still my hero! Great to see this masterpiece doing its thing, thanks a million and keep up the good work.
The 908/3 at 350/375hp and 1100lbs is a much more nimble car than the the much heavier and more powerfull M6A.
Look up the great video of a 908/3 at the same track , by Endorpin, it is being driven with much gusto by a owner/driver who really knows his car... getting around there much quicker than this particular M6A.
Just my POV.... the 908/3 looks to be more fun.. to my eye
Different strokes. I grew up with Sebring and Daytona FIA races... Sports Prototypes in 12 and 24 hour races.
That 908/3 definitely looks like a lot of fun. I'd certainly jump at the opportunity to drive it! It sounds awesome and should have higher cornering speeds.
However, as to "getting around there much quicker than this particular M6A", I had to validate that as the driver of the M6 in question! :) So I timed the in-car video over the same sector to see the performance difference (there wasn't a full lap in the 908/3 video).
I don't know why, but for some reason the 908/3 looks faster in the video, even though it's significantly slower. Maybe it's the video quality or the camera angle that doesn't show as much of the horizon.
The track had just been re-paved and track temperatures were very cold, this was a winter event, they put lime on the track surface to "cure" it. You can hear the wheels locking up in places. The vid I posted was NOT the fastest lap turned by this car.
Hopefully you can enjoy it for what it is, and not be so critical. BTW, this is a small block chevy engine.
My fastest lap that weekend was a 1:28.9 (I'll post that video up shortly). There was way too much rear brake bias and the right rear shock had 1/4 inch of free travel, so the car was not optimal. I think I could get the car down in the high 1:25's low 1:26's with more set-up time and the issues resolved.
This isn't a simply noise of a race car: this is THE PERFECT NOISE of a car for trucks!! It's the better sound I've ever heard (together with those of a FERRARI). It's music for the ears!!!
Thanks for the ride. My father,r.i.p. sold Chevies from the 1960's - 1990's. The car I learned to drive on when I was 16 was a 1968 Camaro SS 396. And, of course, my favorite race cars were the Chevy powered McLarens and Penskes Camaros. Nice memories this brought back, thanks again !
Laguna Seca had just been re-paved and this was the first event right after that. The track was quite slippery, lime had been spread on it to dry it out and the vintage cars all had white powder on their back panels.
The Penske GS Corvette "Targa" roadster had an alloy 427 at Sebring '66. Jim Hall's lI-F had an alloy 427 in1967, Daytona 24 on...his CanAm II-G had alloy 427. 1967 II-D's had alloy 427 as mate to II-F at some races. I don't know which other CanAm cars had alloy and which had iron 427's. CanAm did not run in Florida....our VW Cabrolet died on the way to Atlanta.....
I've been to Laguna a number of times. GREAT FOOTAGE BUT EVEN BETTER SOUND! Oh gee, Harriet, what if we took 800 HP V8 and dropped them into about 1700 lbs of race car? Then make them shift and turn left and right? What a novel idea! CanAm...it hasn't gotten any better than that in the U.S. since.
THANK YOU for the vid...and nicely driven...I can only imagine what it must have been like coming over that hill to break, downshift, and line up for the "corkscrew".
That might not be so great, going up against a DOHC flat-12 with twin turbos making... HOW much was that? 1100 horsepower? Naw, might as well stay home and just let Dark Monohue take the checker and the cup...
I never said I was Follmer or Donohue, but if Follmer and Donohue could do it, it's possible there's someone out there who can. Tom Kristensen, maybe...
Given that it's an M6, and if it is the ex-Jo Bonnier car, either a very highly-modified Chevy small block-say 327-377 c.i-or possibly an aluminum ZL-1 big block Chev, 427 c.i./7 liters on up. Contrary to popular belief, until the arrival of the ZL-1 in 1969 most Can Am cars had small blocks.
It uses a small block chevy around 350 cubic inches, 5.7liters. It has a Magnesium cross-ram fuel injection intake manifold by McKay, with Lucas timed Mechanical fuel injection. I don't know the horsepower, but it's likely 550 to 600hp.
Good vid I wish can-am racing was still around.

The timing was done from the #1 braking marker in corner 11 to the shadow of the bridge just before turn 5 for both cars.
The 908/3 covered that distance in 47.1 seconds while the M6B covered the same distance in 43.0 seconds, some 4 seconds faster.
Based on the laptime of a 1:29.3 in the McLaren, the 908/3 would have turned roughly a 1:37.8 at the pace it was going. Almost 9 seconds a lap slower.
SheehanMotorRacing 3 years ago
