I think this was spot on, regardless to the other comments. I also noticed that Phil himself tends to improvise a bit... but this is the actual studio version.
I would just like to point out to @obopolis that your comments to this gentleman, who has kindly demonstrated this drum fill to others who may not be aware of PHil Collins' contribution to drumming, were unnecessary. (Mike, there is an extra bass drum in between the two final flams though but spot on) If you have nothing nice to say then say nothing.
Whenever someone asks me to play something on the drums its more or less always this cause ii can proudly say 'Yurrrp, ii can drum like a gorilla ;)' haha cheers!
It takes me a good few hours to record and edit videos and I think most people are intelligent enough to work out for themselves if they like it or not .
At this time , this vid has had almost 11,000 views and mostly positive comments .
so rather than hitting the snare twice at the end hit the two tom tom's with both sticks
This can be done with a small kit like yours and without the out of place snare (which is a higher and sharper note than toms) at the end. this will sound much more like In The Air Tonight
@MIKEHODDINOTT i know why do people be so nasty its your passion and u like it so don't take the piss i just started learning drums and i tell u what if u have the guts to record yourself don't even bother trying to ruin other peoples career
@Albin0Donkey Dear PLUG you fist dont know how to drum if you think this is how you play the song this is laughable. You need to go compare the song to this video then talk to me.
I can't believe how negative people are - here's how I see it , on the single released there is no snare on the drum intro but it really doesn't matter that this video shows it, the most important thing is he is teaching you a way to play it and dropping in the massive hint about the bass is something that loads of people do miss out I wish there were more positive people like this guy giving his time up to post a video to help others for free. What a decent bloke. Thankyou
Thanks Mike. I think people need to realize that what you are showing is the basic idea of how the fill goes. Average kits don't have the range of drums needed to do this exact, so being exact only matters for knowing the basic pitch intervals and timing. I have always found some humor in people getting free information then complaining about it. It's like someone taking you to dinner and bitching that they won't spring for the lobster haha. Thanks so much for the help.
Hey Mike, Great video, helped a lot, the problem I'm having at the moment is that I'm a guitarist trying to sequence drums for this, hahaha. So I'm not great at picking the timing up in a way I can understand, are you playing 4 sets of 4 16th notes then 2 8th notes at the end? or are their triplets in there?
cut the snare out there is no snare in the intro ''end of story'' you get everything right up untill you go to the snare..with those last 2 hits do them on the floor tom and then you continue the song if anybody would like me to post a video of the real..real intro on a same size kit as this gentleman i would gladly do so....im not trying to upstage you mate its just you have claimed a miss fact of it being the proper way.
Well my eyes and ears have not let me down that often over the pat 35 years and 20 of them as a professional drummer and teacher. I do explain about improvising with other drums in the video .
I still don't understand why you think this is wrong .
Timing is correct and apart from uttlising the kit that is available , it sounds ok.
You haven't picked up that I'm not using Concert Toms or that the sizes are different.
What really matters is, this is a simple and effective way of teaching the fill.
no..yeah i keep watching this but you are wrong there is no snare in the intro fill ''at all'' i recommend you atempt to watch phil himself do it. its quite obvious you havent read the sheet music or seen how he does it
I haven't read the sheet music , I rely on my eyes and ears with this one.
The reason that I put the snare on the end is that most people, mainly kids out there , haven't got the amount of kit that Phil Collins has .I feel there has to be some sort of solid end to the fill , so I teach people to use the snare to denote the end of the fill . People have to have some licence with which drums to use especially if most people , and I know from teaching , only have smaller kit
@MIKEHODDINOTT well that solid end to the fill is the floor tom but anyway to avoid any more misunderstandings could you correct your statement at the start of the video of it being the proper way that phil collins does it as it will make people belive that it is. p.s your eyes and ears have lied to you.
But, the FILL is now more recognised than the song by this current generation.
When I ask students if they know who Phil Collins is , they have no idea. When I play them the filll, most mention chocolate. From there on , I can entertain them with Genesis and Brand X tracks . Some older students have gone on to play Nuclear Burn !
Ultimatley , the winner here is Mr Collins . BIG royalty cheque and well deserved.
If you want to hear a nice clear slowed down take on this fill...have a listen to "Thru These Walls" from his 1982 album "Hello, I must Be Going". He uses that same fill several times through out the piece...just slower. You can really hear each strike.
you are right, but it only sounds that way when it's not live. a video documentary on "Face Value" shows that Phil does do the "tom, bass, tom" ending in the studio. but if you carefully watch and listen to Phil's "No Jacket Required Tour" Dallas video, he does not do the "tom, bass, tom" live. I've been watching that video for nearly 2 years everyday, at least 50 times a day. haha I guess most of us prefer [the live performances > the studio version] when it comes to this song.
I think this was spot on, regardless to the other comments. I also noticed that Phil himself tends to improvise a bit... but this is the actual studio version.

That's absolutely correct , but , try getting a six year old to count off in sixteenths with every third note a bass drum .
It verges on metric modulation of 3/16 in 4/4 time.
(I'm sure some body will tell me if that's not right !! )
Thanks for watching and a valid comment .
Cheers

Interesting interpretation. But really you should be counting:
1 e & a 2 e & a 3 e & a 4 &

That sucked!
That was the worst attempt I have ever seen.
The snare was never in it it sounds completely out of place and WRONG
So to anyone who reads this comment please try a different video
Don't waste your time as I just did.

Hi.
Thanks (?) for the comment.
Please read previous threads as I have explained the snare drum part.
I use this method many times nearly every week with younger students and never fails.
Thanks

Hi.
Thanks for the comment.
I've checked a transcription on Web humper .com .
It is as you say 16ths and a couple of 8ths at the end.
Although I'm counting off in 3's and 6's , it all adds up to 16 in the end.
12 notes plus the 8th notes split into 4 16th notes add up to 16 = 1 bar.
Please make sure you put the last two notes on a floor tom or all hell will be let loose (Lol!)

Thanks

@MIKEHODDINOTT It basically ends with a triplet....snare, bass, snare.
firstmusic00 1 year ago
@firstmusic00
Well it seems sometimes live he does play an extra bass drum , but I can't hear it on the studio single version.
Still, whatever Mr Collins plays,it's still one of the most iconic and recognised fills in drum history.
Thanks for the well informed comment.
Cheers
