thank god, i thought i was the only one who noticed it being hidden behind a wall. might as well put it inside then. it was probably spinning too fast with no load on it. great design. it looks like a stepper from a scanner or printer would be too small. try looking for an old washer or other appliances with motors in them. experiment.
kinda defeats the purpose of making it 6 feet high if only 3 feet of it is available to catch the wind....move it out of the little cubby ya got it hiding in
@Maxime124 A car alternator will not work due to the fact that instead of having a permanent magnet on the stator, it has electromagnetic coils (EMC's). It relies on the power from the car battery to create a magnetic field with the EMC's. The voltage regulator regulates power to these coils which in turn regulates how much power is generated. No power to the coils on the stator means that no power will be generated. So a car alternator will only work if you replace those coils with magnets.
I'm building my first VAWT now and have hit a problem. What alternator to use? I've got no money to spend on a decent one, so I've been looking around for old machines which have stepper motors or alternators and solenoids.
What can you recommend? My project is small, so something which works on a low rpm would be ideal.
Search for stepper motor basics on Google, there is a site reuk.... there are some great informations abot stepper motors, i built my bridgerectifier for my harvested stepper-motors with that information.
A caralternator is useless, if you not rewind the coils.
Good video. Maby your gears could use a bit of size adjustment. Maby a large gear at the turbine and a small gear at the generator. That way when the VAWT spins once, it might spin the alternater a few times. Maby try a "stepper motor" from a printer....I read that its ok, but I havent tried it.
I've seen a few vids here with printer stepper motors being as generaters. Some were with LED lights so it does provide power without making your own type or getting somemthing like those Amtek type motors/generators you see here also.
Nice wind turbine you got there man, I guess you'll use alow rpm PMA - permanent magnet alternator, aight? :) please do correct me if I'm worng... I think your plan and implementation is really neat and most of it's a working wind turbine, I could tell it just from the video and your design.
Really nice job and 5 stars for you my friend. Greetings from Denmark!
A normal caralternator is sucking about 40Watts away, for nothing, with his electromagnetic system, before he reaches his needed RPM to generate output.
I dont want to sound smart, that are only facts, i dont knew before this vawt-project.
Maybe someone who want to build a vawt read this and does not pay for a thing, that is worthless :o)
But its not the turbine you see, its only the rotor, i need a windadjusting case, but the parts to build is a poormans longtime-project.
Hi Stefan, greetings! It's gonna really a funtional wind turbine with the PMA -permanent magnet alternator due to the force it's creating just by low wind breeze which i can see from this video. you haven't even put it up yet but it's already spinning just by ground base air breeze. How many volt and amps would you like to produce? That would give you a plan for coil winding and stregnth of the magnet to be used. Great, great, great stuff!! Let's make this world green. Hi five, Jon
Wouldn't you be better off putting the generator/alternator in the same axle as the turbine?
I would think that you could eliminate the mechanical losses of the chain drive and gears. ("maybe") .
Of course, if you want it to work your going to need to get rid of those fences on each side. :) Just kidding. I know you don't plan on setting it up on your porch. :))))))
The cheapest thing i could realize, is to use polystyrene in combination with glass fiber(like you build a surfboard)..
I asked at several places for a pipe with inner diameter 1,05m , but the prices are from 150€ per meter(without caps and openings, bearings), up to 1000€ for a complete case.
That is a longtime project, but i believe in it, and that was so much fun to build that.
Needs more blades

Did you use an alternator allready? I build also something like this (check my profile) and I'm wondering if a car alternator will work.

I made bigger flaps from an old plastic-carport, looks funny.
Hmm, do an update-video, if its windy outside.

Thank you for the tip, you mean a stepper motor from a printer, to generate energy?!? :o)
That would be great, i have one..

That was a very good suggestion :o)
I slaughtered an old HP-Printer and had luck, one big stepper, one small and one big that seems to be a brushless thingsi.
I finished an own bridge rectifier, with capazitator and testet the output of the big stepper.
For load i used the bru8shless one and at 900RPM generates the big stepper 12V, thats nice.
*hrh* it powered all my three led lamps with 16 LED, ten superbright.
If i have some money i want to make an own PMM.
Best regards Stefan

Also, if you ever come across a small copying machine and want to strip it, stepper motors are found in there also.

Hiho :o),
at first i tried to install and use a caralternator, with gearshifting to get good RPM.
But now im more informed and a caralternator is definitely not the right thing for my(a) windturbine.
It needs to much RPM to get 50% of his rated output .(start of that point different from type to type at 800RPM-1400RPM :o(.
And yes, you are right, i need a own perfect calculatet, selfwired PMA - permanent magnet alternator.

I thinked about, to build the "case" from polystyrene, in combination with polystyrene, like you build s(m)urfboards.
It uses some compressed air-functions, and im sure, that this will work nice.
I can make an animation, to explain my sick ideas.
Today is a bit better wind, the frame is welded since monday, but only poopoo-wind here.
best regards Stefan

*hrhr* error.
"from polystyrene, in combination with polystyrene"
means
from polystyrene, in combination with glass fibre. :o)

Hi Jon,
"How many volt and amps would you like to produce"
Good question, i dont know the answer now.
Maybe the casebuilding and double-up flaps, are better to build first.
But all this takes some-time now..
Maybe today i have the time to make an animation..
Best regards Stefan

The thing is, that if i want good output with my generator, i need much RPM.
I want to use the gear-shifting for stronger-lower winds, and that the rotor is not turning to fast(deadrunner, critical mass).
The Frame i welded yesterday, today i mounted the generator, but we had today wind below 10m/s.
With load, i think the minimum i need to start with is at 25-30m/s.
Now is it only a rotor(toy), but if i manage to build a case, like it exists in my sick brain, then a real machine replaces the toy
