the station didnt cease operations, it was bought out by Sunbeam Television, based here in South Florida. Sunbeam shut the separate station down to save money and moved all the news to its WHDH 7 studios in Boston.
My family stopped watching channel 7 upon seeing what Sunbeam did to WHDH back in 93. We switched over to WBZ-TV 4 and WCVB-5 back more than a decade ago. WLVI was a hit in our house the minute we got wind of that we just said... typical of the outfit that owns WHDH(TV) now.
frank mallicoat is now on fox 25 and mike wankum on channel 5 i miss thoses days alot actually i used to like whdh but not now after they did this stupid sunbeam
OH..I didn't know that there is no more channel 56 news is no more. Live out in Cali now but sure miss the old Boston anchors...Dale Dorman, Dave Maynard, Dana Hersey and Sunny Jo White the Dj...what ever happened to him? He was on kiss 108...he was awesome.
Unfortunately Sunny Jo White Died of a heart attack in 1996. He was great!! Dale Dorman is doing Mornings on WODS Oldies 103.3. Dana Hersey does voice overs on WRKO and Dave Maynard is retired in Florida I think.
I am bummed! I had no idea that channel 56 was no more! I really miss the old channel 56 and the old channel 38 (WLVI and WSBK) WAY back when Dale Dorman was an announcer, Dana Hersey did Movie Loft, etc. Even the Chet & Nat thing! Gimme back folks like Liz Walker, Bruce Schwoegler, Kasey Kaufman, Shelby Scott, Jack Hynes, Don Gillis, Bob Gamere, Don Kent, even the OLD channel 7! Local TV sucks now.
Well, at least there's WFXT Fox 25's Morning news. I'm not afraid to watch that. Must be VB, or something. Maybe, like Homer missing UPN, you miss the WB. Don't worry, it's still in our hearts.
The news of his passing has hit me very hard. When you watched the weather on TV back in the 60s, 70s and very early 80s you watched Don Kent. The just don't make em like Don anymore
Great jobon this...here in Milwaukee we had the WB/CW station (WVTV) cancel news in March after Sinclair couldn't "financially justify" it anymore, and that goodbye was just as sad because even though they were stuck in the "NewsCentral" template, they did a great job with their newscasts. I always hate to see another station taken over by another, and like those at WVTV (the anchor is quickly rising on the news radio station in Chicago), I hope the old WLVI staff lands on their feet.
I wish nothing but the best for those of you in the WLVI newsroom...and nothing but a flameout for Sunbeam. I hope their new newscast falls on it's ass.
I doubt it, Sunbeam is very popular here in South Florida with a very intense newscast, i think it was a wise move for them to close this. Plus who watches CW for local news anywhere?
Now, i'm a person that doesn't mind 7 News. Sure, for over a decade their news has been fast-paced and tabloid, and in the process alienated some viewers who were used to the traditional way, but after just seeing the new 7 News at 10 on CW56 I was shocked. I for one WAS able to keep up with the stories and the even faster pace, but its clear that Sunbeam is trying to fashion WLVI to be Boston's version of WSVN (as opposed to 'HDH targeting older viewers).
::sigh::, this is so depressing. Even though I don't even watch The CW or the news on the CW at all these days but I just hate it when things like this end it really sucks. I like the two anchors there. ::sigh:: Plus I hate 7 News with a passion....now I guess the only good news in town is Channel 5 WCVB
Hopefully someone else recorded this with something other than a video camera. I did record it on tape, but I have no way to get it from tape onto youtube.
Farewell WLVI's 10pm newscast. Its now 7 News at 10, & Boston's CW is now CW 56. They will also soon get a morning newscast. Maybe someday, WLVI may be like WSVN, with 9 1/2 hours of news per day!
It's really the same station, just with WHDH running the news. I don't think 'HDH will be able to program more news for 'LVI other than during the morning, as the same newsdesk and facilities are used on both stations (meaning CW56 will not be able to have their "youth oriented" news whenever 7 has news on).
56 had a morning newscast that was cancelled in 2002 (I believe) do to lack of interest from viewers. I can't imagine more people would tune in just a few years later.
As of June 1, 2011, WLVI is no longer affiliated with The CW due to Sunbeam Television failing to settle an affiliation dispute with The CW's owners.

Since when does CW do the news?
Psythik 11 months ago
@Psythik It depends what market you are in, but the Boston CW affiliates have had news since the network's inception.

How is it "gay"? They're saying goodbye to the old Ch. 56, not soapboxing for the repeal of CA's Prop 8...LOL

How did the FCC even allow this? Up here in Canada a station shutting down like this would be almost unheard of.
