Both Hugh Hefner & Jerry Orbach went to my alma mater, University of Illinois. Hugh Hefner, I could care less. But the moment I learned Jerry Orbach went here, I felt so proud. :) Jerry Orbach was a wonderfully talented human being. I wish I could have been able to see him perform in real life - but I thank people who upload videos like this.
Jerry sang the song exactly as he had sung it in the original production in 1960. I thought the scarf was a nice touch, as he wore one of those as well when he played "El Gallo." He could do it all.
He was the nicest man who truly loved being an actor. He could sing any song from any Broadway show -- he learned them all and had them in his repertoire. His "Law and Order" gig was good for him in his later years -- it enabled him to live in his beloved New York. I was shocked when I learned of his death -- he just wasn't old enough. I never met him, but I liked him and I miss him.
I heard this song today on The Lawrence Welk Show. Yes, I watch that show! It reminds me of when I was a kid in the 70's. Anyway, I heard this song today, and it was so beautiful, and I've always loved the song ever since I was a kid, and it reminds me of a very nice childhood and how our family was together, but Mom's gone now, and she loved this song, and life really was simpler, and it is nice to remember, and it's okay to look back with happy tears like the ones in my eyes right now.
The voice may have been fresher 22 years earlier, but his diction and communicative chops are far superior here. I guess he just got better and better.......
All he did was stand there and sing , completely commanding the stage and showing all emotions through his voice and face , that's real talent right there no need of flashy sets or anything
I never knew him as a singer (I guess I was under a rock!), but I always loved him, whatever I saw him in. And of course, as Lenny Brisco! He was so much more! What a great talent-I miss him, too.
What a great singer really expresses the lyric simply yet very evocatively a fine actor.

It's so bizarre to hear Lenny Briscoe singing. Why couldn't they have fit this into Law & Order.

Mr. Orbach was talented in television and on Broadway. What a talent, and a gentleman. May he rest in peace.
