This intro inspired me last night to read Animal Farm (in audio, I admit) and then watch the 1954 film adaptation (not so good). It also reminded me of my own links to the soviet union, as in my family tree you can find a soldier under the tzar, as well as a couple of stalinists who lived outside of the soviet union and only heard of Stalin's benevolent treatment of the people. Aside from some weirdos who started "farfetched" rumors about Stalin being a murderer, etc.

Who is the reporter who talks about the ending of the 70 year experiment? Just wondering if he was famous back then or turned famous after that report (after all, they picked that specific report for the intro.

Btw, Peter Robinson should be credited for coming up, at the last minute, with a hawkish line in what was supposed to be a dovish speech. He spent an evening with West Germans, heard what they thought of the situation, and was compelled to write: "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!"
