Well, I thought I was the only one that fully enjoyed this record. It's powerful masterpiece. My lonelyness was blown away when I saw a Swedish documentary decades ago about Per Henrik Wallin (RIP) great piano player and composer. When they interviewed him at his home he played this record. I was not lonely anymore.
You just can't understand a song like this unless your a musician. A guarantee john couldn't care less what you guys think of this music. Thats not what real music is about. Listening to this music is like witnessing a day in the life of John Coltrane, and if you dont care to watch, you dont have to listen.
hey everyone, it's called free jazz. it's not for the faint of ear. a drum solo over john coltrane playing whatever the hell he wants is far outside the standard definition of pop music, but some people find it interesting, and it takes a lot of talent to play. personally i don't like it, but i will respect its right to be listened to.
coltrane is the seminal tenor saxophonist. he stands at the pinnacle of the tenor experience, nothing before or since stands up to the singular entity that trane represents. that being said, sometimes you just have to be in a certain mood or frame of mind to enjoy atonal or free jazz, esp. when it is this cathartic, and as for me, that frame of mind occurs rarely. to compare this against anything else is a waste of time: in music noting is 'better' or 'worse' it is one's taste and mood...
i think john coltrane should come back to life and challenge justin beiber and some of those other fuckers who say they are musicians and he should drill them into the fucking ground...
Geez..john coltrane's incredible expression and brutal power in this recording is why i consider him to be my favorite saxophonist of all time. Another reason why Coltrane is my favorite saxophonist is because every aspect of his playing was unique, and people still continue struggle to not only imitate his playing and sound, but they fail to understand coltrane's philosophies and spiritual reasons for presenting this unique display of art to us.
@balarko24@balarko24 this is expression at its best so maybe yo need to forget about tonal centers because this is WAY beyond that.Coltrane was sooo much ahead of his time and looks like he still is..wake up this is 2011!!!!!!!!!!
@balarko24 this is expression at its best so maybe yo need to forget about tonal centers because this is WAY beyond that.Coltrane was sooo much ahead of his time and looks like he still is..wake up this is 2011!!!!!!!!!!
I LOL AT THIS MUSIC and the snobs who pretend they can make sense out of randomness. A random music generator could have written this and then we'd all agree it sucks, but since he's a big name let's take it seriously and pretend this is genius at its best. Ab is the tonal center and trash surrounds.
Snobs? Ha ha. I could extremely easily say John Coltrane was a jerk and "A Love Supreme" is the Super Potato Album of 20th century music. I really have no problem to say this anytime, anyplace.
I could say Beethoven, Beatles, Miles Davis and any other musician is garbage too, anytime.
This album made me initially be interested about Coltrane. If you could remove your blindfolds and your fake idols would be good for you.
Music is just for living. Many ways to get what you want.
@dancing0being sir, you don't know me. you don't know whether i have blindfolds or if i worship fake idols. perhaps you are the one blindfolded by your assumptions.. and no, men and computers have very little in comon, wtf are you talking about
Have your cup of coffee in the morning, a couple of drinks at night and never forget your daily prayer...A Love Supreme...A Love Supreme...A Love Supreme...
this music is really worth persevering with. tonal centres, or the lack of them, aren't really the point. listen to the drummer - he manages to create flow and motion without actually keeping time, and was one of the main pioneers of being able to do this (another would be Sunny Murray). the album 'stellar regions', recorded around the same time, has a similar concept but is a bit more accessible as there's piano and bass a lot of the time.
@balarko24 from what your saying it would seem as though you were not familiar with much of his mature work. You seem to be missing the point, he is not bound by the western concept of a tonal center. This is obviously a highly rhythmical and lyrical work. This music takes many listens to understand but his sound and his organization of the notes is highly evolved. This is a musician manipulating his instrument on the highest level. Do you like any coltrane from after a love supreme?
Ok, i agree, it is complete crap (what do i have to lose :D). 2 friends of mine that like jazz and Coltrane very much have exactly the same opinion as you for this album.
Coltrane is not a god for me, just a good musician as many others.
Maybe he is your god, tailored just for you and you see him in terror in such a despicable situation. Your painfully made idol is gone.
You are more experienced than me but you never had this experience or just a decent audio system.
I hate people that put limits in music, especially black ones, they are experts at this. When someone tries to do something different he is the black (ha ha) sheep and insane instantly.
Tonal centre? I don't know what you are talking about. It is supposed that one of the main goals of jazz is improvisation, but the majority of jazz musicians always seem to forget.
Jazz isn't the best or most serious or the most complete music on earth. It's just one more music genre. You can't enjoy this music sitting comfortably on your sofa or in a jazz bar drinking and smoking like an idiot.
Music is life experiences. You just haven't lived those, so no "understanding".
Hm, I think the fact Coltrane makes us still talk about his work 50 years later in such different thoughts is proof that his work must be true art, as art should be.
It's probably the greatest expression he's ever done. I don't understand your problem. You say you're loving John Coltrane but it seems you don't love every expression of this artist. Coltrane didn't play for you, neither for me or us, his style is far away from all the prejudices in music industry. He was a highly spiritual being searching for ways to express difficult emotions and thoughts. Anyway, you don't have to like it, I certainly do.
@FunkySkunk90 "You say you're loving John Coltrane but it seems you don't love every expression of this artist." I'm sorry, what's the purpose of this sentence? It sounds as if you think one can't love Coltrane if one doesn't love his every expression. That view just sounds like blind idolatry to me.
I've got this recording. I think it certainly would've been interesting, had Coltrane lived longer, to see what he would've done musically after this avant-garde (or whatever you wanna call it) period. I'm not a huge late-Coltrane fan, but what I do appreciate is his willingness to experiment, stretch out, try new things. And I think he certainly seems like he was closest to God in this late period.
interstellar space is right ... !!!! coltrane left the planet earth b4 he left the planet earth, a friend of mine read his biography & it said that john was trying 2 find the notes between the ivories on the piano ... !!!! THAT - ... is unquestionable genius ...
Well, if 99% of the people "experience" and love Lady Gaga, funk, soul, r'n'b and similar stuff and 0.01% of the population likes this Coltrane, you start to be suspicious and find the whole scene a bit weird.
Agreed, a bit weird and a bit sad, but hopefully the percentage breakdown isn't as bad and I don't think the two extremes ie. Lady Gaga and late Coltrane, are necessarily mutually exclusive in every case. The two extremes seem also to be aimed at very different goals; Lady Gaga at mass consumption and pop appeal, Coltrane at the evolution of music and of the human spirit. Why not find what is enjoyable in both extremes and celebrate the unbelievable diversity in todays music?
@gperla3 i love gaga and trane. perhaps gaga's personal style and flair has lended her the company by comparison of the greats of music. lets keep her in the madonna lane. a handle full of years earlier she'd have resembled amy winehouse, etc. coltrane was part of no machine. no mtv. he was a player. he lived the life. no knock on gaga. but to compare the two or to pair the two would only speak to the lack of perspective of the comparer.
Well, 99% of the population live very standard and mediocre lives and expect nothing more from music than to lull them. Some people like things to challenge and stimulate them. I guess that can be seen as weird, not wanting the musical equivalent of candy all the time.
@fahadmowlana It's really an acuired taste. But lots of the things he does are actually insanely difficult... Not to mention it still has chord structure
Great album!
