I am born and raised in Lake Charles and my dad and his family lived in Big Lake at the time and my grandfather helped recover the bodies. He told me some horrible stories. It was really horrible.
I was six years old, and I recall watching the recovery operations on our old black-and-white television on Channel 2 (Baton Rouge) and Channel 10 (Lafayette). The morning after Audrey hit Cameron, I remember watching my father drive off into the heavy rain and wind to check on one of his company's drilling rigs in Calcasieu Parish. We lived in Opelousas (St. Landry Parish). Later that day, my mother explained that many people had lost their lives in the dark very early that morning.
