I am so sick of the government running all of these programs that take perfectly good vehicles off of the road. my 95 windstar with the 3.8 was amazing. it towed like crazy, was the most comfortable car, and had amazing reliability. I pulled a shed that was 12X8 foot across my back yard with no skid under it. the tranny started to have trouble in 2007, and we donated it in 2008. the original shocks were on there until 2004. loved that car. best ford minivan.

A dealership would not risk criminal charges to make a couple extra bucks. People do not understand that the car as a whole is not completely wasted. The government says that any part may be pulled off and sold except for the engine and drivetrain(unless the drivetrain is sold in parts). I understand some will fall through the cracks but it isnt as easy as you think it is, the government put in alot of precautions to prevent fraud, that why they studied the similar program germany did awhileback

First in order for a dealership to participate in the program they have to give the government full acess to their database, so lets see hmm a dealership fills out the paperwork to get their money for a clunker and then hmm the government sees a vehicle with the same vin as a clunker being sold, yeah lets see how well that works out.

There is a control system, and there is a need for disable the engines, they are called clunkers for a reason, the whole point is to get rid of the older less fuel efficent vehicles and get people into more fuel efficent eco friendly cars and trucks, it would defeat the purpose if they allowed the same pos cars traded in through the program back on the road

Cars get recycled, and it's pretty common for working cars to be scrapped in other places around the world. The difference is that their tax and legislative cultures are already adapted to this model.

Giving incentives for more fuel efficient vehicles is one thing. Destroying cars for no other reason than getting a few less MPGs is deplorable and inexcusable. Shame on our government, and shame on those who refuse to open their eyes.

I am in the process of finding out exactly how the government knows these cars were destroyed. There is a lot of extra paperwork that goes along with these deals and presumably they can track when the cars are destroyed. After we finish off the engine the cars are taken away and crushed. This whole program seems like a terrible waste. Giving other peoples money away and then needlessly destroying these cars, its really a shame.

I was against this plan from the first time I heard about it. Our supervisors even passed around a memo telling us we HAD to call our reps in congress to encourage them to vote for this. I told them I would do no such thing and that even if this plan wasn't total garbage i dont appreciate being told what I will support. I said to my boss whats next are they going to tell us who to vote for? He didnt have an answer for that. I just feel like the public should be aware of what is really going on.

@ferretbri sounds like what i did but i was told to do it to a 94 M edition miata it ran fine had 65K on it an old lady was the owner she died and her kids sold it to cash for clunkers everything was fine the only thing is it didnt have a key but that was a really easy fix but i told my boss the engine was blown and the bought the car for $100 i got a title for it inspected and registered and showed up in it a week later i got fired that day lol
