  • This is a Deist rather than an atheist song. But we're sort of on different sides over one issue (the creation of the Universe.) We both share the sentiment that organized religion has been responsible for massive damage to the human race. The founding fathers (of America) were deist's, some of them thrown out of my (UK) country for irreligion (atheism).

  • Beautiful song :3

  • This pretty much sums up how I feel about yet another mass shooting in Norway by some right wing fundamentalist!

  • I decided I needed to remove this song from my songbook. Three times in three years I've attempted to perform it, and three times I've been canceled on account of a HUGE storm knocking out the power. This time, with funnel clouds. True story.

  • @soapgirl12 I don't find UU churches so bad. In fact, once I came to terms with my lack of belief, I went to a local UU church a couple times and really enjoyed it. The local UU church is big on avoiding "God-talk" and big on finding wisdom from common things, and from world philosophies.

  • thanks for this song girls! RELIGION IS DISGUSTING

  • @fourtywpm :( religion doesn't have to be discussing.

  • @soapgirl12 Believing in a god doesn't have to be, but religion is disgusting. So many people killed in the name of their god it's truly, truly disgusting. Not to mention the fear and guilt it instills in people...

  • @fourtywpm well. look up unitarian universalism and you might change your mind a little. :)

  • @soapgirl12 This is something i came across when looking up info: "Historically, both Unitarianism and Universalism have roots in the Christian faith." Seriously though, people are better off thinking for themselves.

  • @fourtywpm And they both broke away from the churches of oppression. And the UU's have always been the peace loving revolutionary type. in the UU there are people of all faiths and philosophies and they have all come to believe and associate with those faiths or philosophies on the own. i wish not to convert you just to show you that there are people out there who don't like what religion does but try to approach the problem with an open mind. :)

  • I ain't afraid.

  • Saw Holly years ago when she was in the FTA group protesting the VietNam war and several times later in the 90's. She's great!!

  • COOL

  • u should be afraid :)

  • @GeOrGeAlExAnDeRx

So should you... A Christian in Egypt, you'll be dead soon 8-)

Not that I wish for your death but the world will be a better place once you're gone. 8-)

And I find it funny that you threaten hellfire, yet you yourself are bound for hell, at least in the eyes of your neighbors.

  • This RULES! :-D I want to cover this!

  • @ichbintantehallo - wrong to think like what? Listen more carefully to the lyrics, please. The song is saying "It's NOT religion that bothers me, it's the fact that people use religion as an excuse for injustice and inhumanity". Also, there isn't a single verse where Islam (or any other religion) is singled out, either positively or negatively - every religion mentioned is treated equally in this song. I think if you listen carefully, you will find that the song is actually agreeing with you. :)

  • it sound good, but i thik it is wrong to think like this. I mean a religion or church is not to make wars or to "scary "other people..it exist to make hope, so taht humans can belive in something.

And also the part with allah..of cause is the islamic religion more radical, but that is not religion. The religion is used wrongly often, so if you have a war or you want to make on, than you can convince the people to fight for you. so i think the religion is at our time very difficult.

  • you all have great harmony, but to get respect you have to give respect its not about being afraid as much as respect from one human being to another.

  • I think Atheism is a pretty cool guy. He reflects on his actions and doesn't afraid of anything.

  • shallowlulia gaymen! it is like a revivalist for living creatures, as opposed to christians.

  • how do we love you ms near and friends. thank you sooooo much for all your words of love and wisdome. xoxoxoxoxoxoxox

  • I saw the words, found them offensive, then saw this and I SO GET IT.

  • Does anyone have a recording of Holly Near's "Girl Talk"? She wrote alternative lyrics to that tired and sexist Standard of the same name. I heard her sing it, probably in 1982, at the Hudson River Clearwater Festival. Would LOVE to hear it again!

  • Brilliant!

  • Halleluiah !!!!!

  • What a delightful song - great lyrics too.

  • great medicine for "good" friday. i love Holly Near!

  • We aint afraid of your gods, you can´t scare us with your imaginary friends and demons. It´s time to put stupidity behind and enter the age of reason

  • Sums the whole thing up in a few verses. Genius.

  • Yeah, his non-existence scares me too.

  • I heard this song for the first time this afternoon at the end of an Atheist television show. It was love at first hearing. I know it sounds corny, but I love the song. Holly Near is awesome. Phenomenal song, and the two women she's singing with have wonderful voices.

  • I heard this song for the first time today, and i think it´s great.

  • If it's corny, I guess I am too. I'm with you - I love the song. In fact, the word 'love' shows up in most of the comments to this song.

  • Sweet!

  • Great! I love it!

  • The song can be downloaded for free om holly nears website. Just google for "Holly Near - I Ain't Afraid mp3".
