i'm gonna be honest here, that's not how its played. If you watch some live videos you will see that at the chorus he hits the 4th fret on the a string, then the 7th string on the a string, then the 7th on the e string and finally the 5th fret on the e string.

@GibsonRocks12 Actually I've seen a ton of bassists use their thumbs. On the fret hand they use it to mute a lower string if they don't want it to play when it shouldn't. And on the pick hand, look at Fieldy of KoRn. He uses his thumb all the time.
