the nice thing about her 3A is that its nice and neat with a clean landing and checkout, not like some ladies' 3A ( or other jumps) nowadays who just rely on their skinny/slim figures to squeeze the rotations out, hence the common under-rotation, barely squeezed out check-outs etc.
Many women land triple axels in practice. But if it's not done in competition at a USFSA or ISU event, you don't get the title of recognition from those organizations. Everyone knows that Tiffany Chin was landing them in practice for years. Micheal Weiss was landing quad lutzes in practice but none were considered 'completed' in competition so he never got credit. You gotta land it when it counts.
@jonathanscott26 Sure, you are right. However, what's different about Tiffany's 3A attempts is that she landed those 3As very, VERY convincingly unlike others (including Weiss's 4Lz attempts, which were consistently under-rotated, 2-footed, or otherwise unclean).
@HattieLovesCattie If we count small competitions, Midori Ito landed hers in 1985. There are stipulations about the settings in which these jumps must be completed (e.g., ISU competitions vs. national competitions, etc.) for them to be recognized.
It was indeed 1986 at the Nationals on Long Island. It was clear that her skating had deteriorated, but she this one brilliant practice session, and when it was clear she was going to try a triple axel, every eye was on her. She landed it beautifully to great applause.
I saw Tiffany do triple axels in practice at Nationals in 1986. I was told she landed it cleanly on the sixth attempt she ever made. These are indeed triples, her double axels rotate much more slowly. The fact that landed triple axels was completely known in the skating world in the 1980's.
Just count the revolutions, 2 and a half. It is high and powerful but it is a double axel. The rotation is totally completed in the air which is quite impossible for a ladies's triple axel
i downloaded it and slow-moed 1/16th ... it is definitely a triple ... however, if it's "doctored" (i am not suggesting it is) then i would not know the better ... but just from slowing it down 16 times and counting the revolutions there aer 3.5 of them in the way this video was presented.
Tiffany Chin is an amazing skater and coach. You shouldn't compare her to anyone.

Was there a frame missing? Sure didn't look like a triple to me.

it's a double, unquestionably, a double axel.

Great posture too. Seems like she had some good technique and timing didn't have to muscle it.

i really thought tiff would have done more with her career. Classic case of a nasty asian mother who destroys her daughter. Draggon lady!

Wait...this is b4 Tonya Harding landed it in competition in 1994. and i thought Midori lto was the only other one b4 tonya to land it.
Cheydow 2 years ago
Tonya was rumored to have landed one in a small skate competition in the late 1980's but it was never verified.

stefrevollo, this is absolutely a triple axel!
She was known to have one early in her career - great pity her jumping went downhill later on........
She was maybe not as languid as Cadavy or as dynamic as Thomas, but her elegance was superb (much prettier positions that Witt ever had back then).

The jump is a triple axel, that´s sure...

in 1986 even her triple salchow was inconsistent - you must be mistaken.
