The name "Onmyouza" is in itself an indication of the lyrical contents and musical direction that the band maintains.

Onmyouza is an old reading of the characters [陰陽座], meaning the meeting of Yin and Yang. The use of the form "Onmyou" also gives other associations. At the imperial court in Heian-era Japan, there were sorcerers called onmyouji, [陰陽師], spiritual advisors, diviners and exorcists of evil spirits.

Onmyoudo is the Taoist principles of Yin and Yang, and the mystical ways associated with them. Much focus was also put on the magic of the elements: fire, water, wood, earth, and metal. Legends often tell of onmyouji struggling with Japanese mythological creatures, youkai, to the extent that they themselves had supernatural beings, the shikigami, in their service.

Abe no Seimei (921-1005) was one of the most famous onmyouji.
