Where was YouTube when I was a kid. This stuff is great. I looooved Godzilla when I was a kid (along with just about every other kid in the world). Thanks for the upload.
I hate how they made Godzilla goofy looking to appeal to kids. in my opinion the 1964 suit was the last good showa suit (The 1965 one was somewhat decent though).
@TheCGIMaster probably because the more films they made during the 60's and 70's they had to cut some costs on making suits so basically one toe went and figured no one would really know the difference
@minillagodzilla2004 Pause at 1:06 and compare it to the picture of Fake Godzilla on the Godzilla wiki. You'll see that the faces are similar, but are NOT the same. As August138 and I already said, the suit was made in 1979 as a promotional suit for the 25th anniversary of Godzilla. This suit was never used in any movies.
Toho continued making promotional Godzilla suits for events, even after they stopped making Godzilla movies for 9 years in the 70s/80s. This is just one of those suits. It's in too good condition to be the suit used in the water scenes/fake MG scenes from 74-75.
You people think this is the godzilla vs mechagodzilla suit, no I think it looks like the godzilla suit from Godzilla vs Megalon, the suit used for the swimming scenes.
While I do agree with you that this isn't the Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla suit, I don't think it's the one used to show Godzilla in the ocean either (though that was the same suit used when Godzilla was fighting the disguised Mechagodzilla in the industrial park). The head's overall shape is too bulky, and the eyes looks a lot bigger, which leads me to believe this was just one of the suits made exclusively for publicity events
That was just straight up cool to see Nakajima portraying the Big G once again. The suit is definitely not from any of the G films of the Showa period... though it looks like a cross between Soshingoji suit and the Megarogoji suit. My guess it had something to do with promoting the magazine he was holding... though I find it bizarre he was holding a G figure. Still, he was in his 50's portraying the Big G in this clip. For such a little man, you got to give him credit that he could still do it.
I can't quite tell, is that suit from Terror of Mechagodzilla, or is that the Fake Godzilla suit used in Godzilla Vs. Mechagodzilla?
But any rate, yeah, you gotta give Nakajima credit. Even the lightest of those suits were pretty heavy, and he was no spring chicken at that point. Guy's tougher then a $2 steak.
I'm doubting that was even a real suit from the films; the tail is much shorter and the overall build of the body is fair too slim--it may have been made just for the photo shoot. I could be wrong. But it is the design from the first half of GvsMG when Mechagodzilla pretended to be Gojira before the Goji appeared. I met Mr. Nakajima last year--he is a very friendly, energitc old man. He said he'd still play Godzilla if he had the strength. :) Nice to see him in action!
I laughed a little bit when he was holding that Godzilla action figure
*GASP* Godzilla molted (joke)
This kind of makes me wonder what it would look like if they where filming a Godzilla movie and one of the stage crew members got on the set by mistake
Isn't that the x-tra suit that was made for "Godzilla vs. the Cosmic Monster" -- the one that was Mechagodzilla in disguise in the beginning of the movie? (And also used at the very end of "Terror of Mechagodzilla" as he heads off to sea?
Thanks for posting this rare clip -- I have never seen this before, but his is not from 1973. This is from 1983, and is 8mm footage taken by the staff of "Uchusen" magazine while shooting photographs for one of their installments on suit actors by Hurricane Ryu.
In one shot, Nakajima (in the Godzilla suit) is holding issue #15 of "Uchusen" which was the summer issue when the magazine was a quarterly, which was published in 1983.
IThe man in the blue shirt and sunglasses is the founding editor, Saki Hijiri, and the woman in the white shirt is Hijiri's wife, Jun Amemiya. The Godzilla is one of Toho's attraction suits from the 25th Anniversary celebrations in 1979.
I hope that I have solved the mysteries of this film for you, and thanks for posting this rare, rare film of Mr. Nakajima returning as Godzilla one last time in 1983!
I'm glad you liked it, I found it on Toho's region 2 Ghidrah dvd. I swear I heard somewhere that it was the 1973-75 suit and that the actual clip was from '73. I'll change the description and title accordingly.
It's great to here from the author of the Tsuburaya book. What a great tribute to one of the most underrated names in cinema.
Cool! That's one of the R2s I don't have (I have Toho Video's Laserdisc, but didn't pick up the DVD). I also know the people in the film, Saki and his wife (I would take them around San Francisco every year when they would visit), but the clincher is the issue #15 of "Uchusen", which was published in '83.
Thanks for the kind comments about my book, I really appreciate it. Stay tuned for news about a Tsuburaya event in SF later this year, with a special guest from Japan!

No, it's not from any film; as I posted, it is an attraction (publicity) suit created for Toho's 25th Godzilla Anniversary in 1979.
