Actually, Vanguard had a LOT of appeal to a large number of gamers. The incredibly lack of quality, frequent crashes and disintegration of Brad leading up to the take over by Sony is what killed it for most.
As for Vanguard not ever being anything ... just wait, what do you think EQ3 is going to be using as a base/engine etc. Sony doesn't buy up game tech & companies just because they think it is fun.

I played this for about 3 months and felt the classes were pretty fun, but no instances, no decent group content.... They made a lot of mistakes, sadly.

The world of Vanguard is large enough that even with a server full to the top I doubt it'd have crowded any dungeons. And if I wanted a game where I played by myself with a few people.. I'd play Diablo, not an MMO.

@argottobob I've played MMOs for a good 12 years, and those that introduce instancing become less and less social. WoW is probably the most anti social MMO out there. The quest based leveling rewards solo players and encourages people to play alone, and only group for group required steps. And when they group, there's no talking.
And instances, as you said, lets people who already know eachother play together. I met most of my MMO friends in dungeons. Can't do that now with instances.

Not every game has random match ups like WoW. Still have to find people to fill the spots for an instanced dungeon, which is the same principle.

Seems unpopulated for a few reasons: (1)Game's pop is still on the low side, and it depends on the server...some are more pop than others. (2)World is H.U.G.E. and people really can disappear into the wilderness. (3)People tend to gather in a few areas where they crowd up because amenities are nearer at hand.

PvP is ffa; the server is Sartok. The pop is low, but won't improve if people don't play it. The devs recently did some work on it.
Kinda late response. No PvP. They don't bother balancing the game for it so things are retarded. Melee combat is the same crap in every MMO. Paladins are pretty good.
Most mmorpgs are pve designed at heart. It must be very hard to make a balance between pvp and pve. You want players to be able to progress through pve content, however when you add the same damage one can do in pve to pvp it creates problems. I have played many , many mmorpg games, and I cant name one that players do not complain about pvp "balance" IMO if you want true pvp play halo, or Unreal Tournament or any 1st person shooter where there arent 10,000 gear/weapon, stat options.

This is exactly what I wanted, but with 100x better game play and none of the bugs.

As to exp loss, there has to be Some penalty for death or there is no sense of danger. VG does it the best way I've seen, since you CAN get back most of the exp you lose if you can get back to the same place. (maybe more stealthily the 2nd time)
I Played this When it first came out gave it 2 months but it was just too buggy and imcomplete and I went back to WarCrack lol they had great Ideas though I wish I could see the progress I would still hate the EXp loss system which I think is the worst thing in MMOs you are punished for Exploring and under it my curiosity about your Virtual world could potentially cost me a level(there is no deleveling in V:SOH but you know what I mean exp loss is so Archaic)
I really like the XP loss system. When you die you lose XP and leave a grave at the place you died, then if you go back to the grave you get almost all of your XP back
Corpse recovery is terrible I remember playing it and having people in my group getting killed over and over trying to recover their corpse it really slowed things down Xp loss systems are Archaic it's just away to keep you playing longer part of the reason WOW is succesful is because after EQ ppl didn't wanna deal with that WOW has a much smarter death system that doesn't penalize you for Exploratio I know that sounds Fanboyish b/c Isaid wow a lot lol i'm just against xp loss mechanics
Vanguard Saga of Heroes is an absolutely beautiful game with great mechanics that I had a blast in all the way to level 50, but not being in a large raiding guild really limited my potential and I eventually let my subscription end. Still try and keep up to date with what is going on though.

I used to play this game. I dont know if anything has changed yet, but there was absolutely nobody at all on the servers. There were a few that i passed by on the roads. Thats about it though.
The population isn't that bad these days. People are slowly starting to come back to it since the terrible launch. Most of the bugs are fixed. If you're thinking about coming back, waste no time. It's much better than it used to be.
Actually I had plenty of footage of players but I re-recorded it to purposely not have many people in the video, except at the bit in the bank in Khal with Slappy. I took a few scenes 5 or so times just so I wouldn't get people in the scene
I did not think it was especially harder than most mmos. I would have continued playing if I had someone to play with IRL though. I cannot play mmos alone
You must not understand the point of this video. He isn't showing you the people, he is showing scenery. This is one of the largest MMOs created it is unlikely he would see anyone while flying around in the middle of nowhere. Play the game, plenty of people IMO.
Were you watching the same video...? he's flying in the middle of no where most the time of course you wont see people. When he goes into the city however there are ten people in each room he enters. don't be stupid.
This game has come close to Everquest 2 as the ultimate example of how fancy rendering techniques do not make up for a complete and utter lack of artistic talent. THIS GAME LOOKS LIKE ASS, and runs like it to boot.

Your video's that you made are making me think of re-subbing my account for vanguard. I played for the first month when vanguard was released to the public. It was the most bug written,memory leaked,crashing piece of cr** game I've ever played of an MMO at release. Ive been reading around online and talking to friends who say it's vastly improved and a totally changed game. Numerous Bug and game play improvement's which supposedly people say is totally a great and full functioning game now.
Yes they're right, there has been years of solid development making it a much more complete game. There are still bugs like any other MMO but it's definitely no more than usual.

EQ died in my eyes when they released Gates of Discord. I was getting key'd for the planes. So much fun. I started Vanguard back up to give it another try. I was close minded when I played it back at launch.
Well you know they are still releasing updates to Everquest all the time, you can still play it :) But obviously I think Vanguard is better, I think of it as EQ3 in some respects. Though it is very very different in some ways, being made by the same people as the EQ series it does share commonalities and that's a very good thing.

Environment physics usually refers to gravity and collisions with objects, which Vanguard does have for sure. In fact some characters are able to learn from their falling injuries if they fall too far and build up a tolerance to it, it's cool.
Yes, you can see them more in the 2nd video I think. Definitely in the 3rd one but I haven't uploaded that yet, I will in the next few days hopefully.

Well since they released the free 14 day trial we have seen a good increase in players, it's really cool. Plus the training island (Isle of Dawn) is much better at teaching you how to play than the old way was, so I think we are retaining more players now because they overcome the learning curve more often instead of giving up.
The expansions are released roughly every 2 months with no extra charge.

VG offers a hardcore EQ like PvE. The game has enormous amount of content, a wide array of classes and races and the art is fantastic. However there are still some bugs, who sometimes get on my nerves. None of them really affect the game that much, but its still a pain in the ass.
I suggest you try the 14 free trial, but bare in mind, that the special trial island is simply the worst and the buggiest place in the whole game.
Yeah that's a good description. If you do the trial and think "hmm this game has potential.." then you will probably love it when you are off the island.
The people who play Vanguard and really love it are usually the ones who have played many MMOs over the years. If you have endured grindfests (e.g. any free MMO, WoW, etc) Vanguard is a very refreshing change; it's actually interesting and requires more than clicking on a mob and waiting for it to die ;)
Yeah I think Khal and NT got better, Ahgram is still bad in the very narrow halls, but it has improved too. They seem to have forgotten to optimize Veskal's though, it is probably planned

That's a good idea, I will post specs. I'm actually mostly a crafter and diplomat so am only level 34 adventuring despite having played the game for over a year (played alts as well). I'll definitely get more videos of higher level places when I level up more :) It's such a massive world I could make dozens of videos like this and still miss great stuff, like you said! Me and about 20 odd members of my guild quit VG mid last year but have been thinking about coming back. the only thing holding us back is the complete and utter lack of media coming out of the game.
No pics, vids or anything to show how the game has improved or changed. All there is, is the vgplayers forums and its nothing but bitching about broken things (as all mmo forums are), it makes the game just sound flat out miserable.

Yeah I'm really surprised at the lack of media being released by the community as well. I can assure you there are still heaps of people playing, in fact there are probably more than a year ago because of the release of the trial.
You're right that people do complain, I've had bugs in the game for sure, but compared with other MMOs I've played they are nothing. The GMs are pretty responsive too, they fix things quickly.
All of the most miserable members of the community post in those forums. If I based the game's progress on those forums I'd quit and never look back. The forums are absolutely not a reflection of the game, even more than in most games. The only worse forums I've seen were AoC, and from what I hear, WOW.
I completely agree, this game was way ahead of its time when it was released. It had that bad release because it was rushed and now they have had all this time to give it more polish and content, it really could be released this year and it would still be reviewed as having cutting-edge graphics.

For soloing I would recommend a druid, they are great at controlling enemies by using holding/sleeping spells, we get cool minions and get some big damage dealing skills. As with many games, druids are a pretty good balance of everything except tanking (which is why you don't let the mobs hit you).
But of course the class you are best suited to depends on you, there are no bad classes, they are all good and fun. You can have as many alts as you want anyway so you can have all classes ;)
I have tryed a Druid. It suit me perfectly, love CC and DoT and a tad of healing when needed. Tryed so many P2P and F2P MMO, and I can`t belive I have overlooked this amazing game, wasted money on AoC CE, Warhammer CE and this beauty has been in the dark corner. Will make a few other classes before my trial runs out to feel it, but I think I will sub :) 99.9%

Such a great game, sure it has bugs but still a great game. I recently built a new system that can handle these graphics, beautiful game.

i liked this game, scenary looked amazing (even though it looked to clean sometimes...like a picture)

Actually I had plenty of footage of players but I re-recorded it to purposely not have many people in the video, except at the bit in the bank in Khal with Slappy. I took a few scenes 5 or so times just so I wouldn't get people in the scene

The best with Vanguard is, that no noobs cant play it, its too hard. Its official the 2nd hardest MMO in the world, right after Eve.

Yeah I agree. It generally keeps idiots and children from playing it which results in a more mature community than most MMOs I've tried.

I did not think it was especially harder than most mmos. I would have continued playing if I had someone to play with IRL though. I cannot play mmos alone

You must not understand the point of this video. He isn't showing you the people, he is showing scenery. This is one of the largest MMOs created it is unlikely he would see anyone while flying around in the middle of nowhere. Play the game, plenty of people IMO.

Were you watching the same video...? he's flying in the middle of no where most the time of course you wont see people. When he goes into the city however there are ten people in each room he enters. don't be stupid.

This game has come close to Everquest 2 as the ultimate example of how fancy rendering techniques do not make up for a complete and utter lack of artistic talent. THIS GAME LOOKS LIKE ASS, and runs like it to boot.

I just recently signed up, when I built my new pc with Vanguard in mind, and tho it still has bugs as every other MMO has, it's overall better than anything else on the market, definately awesome graphics, even on the lowest options :).

u made a very nice video showcasing vanguards beauty, props to you. the pc i have now was built with vanguard in mind when i made it lastyear. i may get bits of lag, but i can for the most part max it as well, and it is amazing to look at, the nightsky. the weapon/armor shines at the right angle. nice game. and excellent video

Your video's that you made are making me think of re-subbing my account for vanguard. I played for the first month when vanguard was released to the public. It was the most bug written,memory leaked,crashing piece of cr** game I've ever played of an MMO at release. Ive been reading around online and talking to friends who say it's vastly improved and a totally changed game. Numerous Bug and game play improvement's which supposedly people say is totally a great and full functioning game now.

Yes they're right, there has been years of solid development making it a much more complete game. There are still bugs like any other MMO but it's definitely no more than usual.

This game is by far one of the most beautiful games I've ever played. Content is also just as amazing. If you're one of the kids that use the word "noob" and think pvp is all gaming is. This isn't for you. Traditional gamers was the audience. I'll never leave it again.

yea i did the same thing. i was in the beta and it was seriously flawed and i havent touched it since. I was very happy with all of the concepts like building houses and ships. I re-activated my account last night. we shall see if it has improved any

Well the game looks different when you make settings higher of course. This video was taken with all settings maxed. It was taken on Xeth too :)

I would go back to EQ, but its a lost cost. I'm so far behind.
EQ died in my eyes when they released Gates of Discord. I was getting key'd for the planes. So much fun. I started Vanguard back up to give it another try. I was close minded when I played it back at launch.

Well you know they are still releasing updates to Everquest all the time, you can still play it :) But obviously I think Vanguard is better, I think of it as EQ3 in some respects. Though it is very very different in some ways, being made by the same people as the EQ series it does share commonalities and that's a very good thing.

Thanks :) And yeah I really hope people see these vids and realize that Vanguard was wayyy ahead of its time when it was released. It was meant to be played right now and on today's modern computers to really see what they were going for.

Environment physics usually refers to gravity and collisions with objects, which Vanguard does have for sure. In fact some characters are able to learn from their falling injuries if they fall too far and build up a tolerance to it, it's cool.

Well since they released the free 14 day trial we have seen a good increase in players, it's really cool. Plus the training island (Isle of Dawn) is much better at teaching you how to play than the old way was, so I think we are retaining more players now because they overcome the learning curve more often instead of giving up.
The expansions are released roughly every 2 months with no extra charge.

VG offers a hardcore EQ like PvE. The game has enormous amount of content, a wide array of classes and races and the art is fantastic. However there are still some bugs, who sometimes get on my nerves. None of them really affect the game that much, but its still a pain in the ass.
I suggest you try the 14 free trial, but bare in mind, that the special trial island is simply the worst and the buggiest place in the whole game.

Yeah that's a good description. If you do the trial and think "hmm this game has potential.." then you will probably love it when you are off the island.
The people who play Vanguard and really love it are usually the ones who have played many MMOs over the years. If you have endured grindfests (e.g. any free MMO, WoW, etc) Vanguard is a very refreshing change; it's actually interesting and requires more than clicking on a mob and waiting for it to die ;)

Yeah I think Khal and NT got better, Ahgram is still bad in the very narrow halls, but it has improved too. They seem to have forgotten to optimize Veskal's though, it is probably planned

That's a good idea, I will post specs. I'm actually mostly a crafter and diplomat so am only level 34 adventuring despite having played the game for over a year (played alts as well). I'll definitely get more videos of higher level places when I level up more :) It's such a massive world I could make dozens of videos like this and still miss great stuff, like you said! I'll also add the link to the 2nd video in this description while I post specs to make it easier for people to find more of them

Raids can bring even the most powerful computers to their knees ;) As with most MMOs, people often lower the settings for raids. I'm putting system specs in the video description now :) Thanks for the comment :D

Me and about 20 odd members of my guild quit VG mid last year but have been thinking about coming back. the only thing holding us back is the complete and utter lack of media coming out of the game.
No pics, vids or anything to show how the game has improved or changed. All there is, is the vgplayers forums and its nothing but bitching about broken things (as all mmo forums are), it makes the game just sound flat out miserable.
anyways nice vid, give us more of all the shiny new content.

Yeah I'm really surprised at the lack of media being released by the community as well. I can assure you there are still heaps of people playing, in fact there are probably more than a year ago because of the release of the trial.
You're right that people do complain, I've had bugs in the game for sure, but compared with other MMOs I've played they are nothing. The GMs are pretty responsive too, they fix things quickly.

All of the most miserable members of the community post in those forums. If I based the game's progress on those forums I'd quit and never look back. The forums are absolutely not a reflection of the game, even more than in most games. The only worse forums I've seen were AoC, and from what I hear, WOW.

The graphics on this game are the best in any mmo out there.
recommendation = the night parts are dark and difficult to see.... next videos would like to see more day light.

I completely agree, this game was way ahead of its time when it was released. It had that bad release because it was rushed and now they have had all this time to give it more polish and content, it really could be released this year and it would still be reviewed as having cutting-edge graphics.

For soloing I would recommend a druid, they are great at controlling enemies by using holding/sleeping spells, we get cool minions and get some big damage dealing skills. As with many games, druids are a pretty good balance of everything except tanking (which is why you don't let the mobs hit you).
But of course the class you are best suited to depends on you, there are no bad classes, they are all good and fun. You can have as many alts as you want anyway so you can have all classes ;)

I have tryed a Druid. It suit me perfectly, love CC and DoT and a tad of healing when needed. Tryed so many P2P and F2P MMO, and I can`t belive I have overlooked this amazing game, wasted money on AoC CE, Warhammer CE and this beauty has been in the dark corner. Will make a few other classes before my trial runs out to feel it, but I think I will sub :) 99.9%

A cleric is good for soloing, they can hold their own as a tank, heal and dish out damage.
