I had a theory that you still use a grid for nodes you can break, but it all sew's into 1 object... I'm glad someone capable of XNA can actually do it!
Not really, I created the idea my self, I don't use voxels or any other classical technique.
in simplest terms, the world is divided into cube sections, and the vertices in each cube are then moved to fit the explosion.
but this creates a whole loads of problems, for example: sometimes triangles get pushed throw walls and gives some really ugly results, I have since then given up on this technique and instead gone in different directions.
The first game I ever saw this in was red faction, its a shame its not in more games, its a great feature, blasting away any part of the map you want with a fusion rocket launcher
I really think that if you were to continue realistic hole type destruction and creation then you would be the sole person to make a sandbox like that. Please, for the sake of alot of entertainment continue with this aswell.
I know what you mean, and i have plans for something similar for my next project, it will be a very different game than Liero however, but it will have round holes... but that project is a secret for now ;-)
oh! I didn't see that you commented on this old movie, this project(with round holes) is terminated, and a new Liero3D with voxel graphics has replaced it.
Well then I'm sorry to disappoint you, all my effort goes into my Minecraft remake and not L3D (and you should see my minecraft remake before you judge)
why do you hate Minnecraft "clones" ? you do know that minecraft is a clone on a box-based game where you build and dig around, right?
I seriously don't understand why narrow-minded people think it is okay to make a clone from any other game today, for example WoW, Diablo, Command & Conquer, or even mario... every game from its own category.
if you make a game, odds are it will be a "remake" of some existing game that inspired you in the first place.
why would minecraft be different? it is a new category, and people will be inspired by it, get used to it.
@FranticEntertainmen dude, you are not understanding my comment, i like games that are "original" i dont like to buy a game and realize its basicly the games i already have. and i kind of gave up the minecraft concept of them cloning, notch actually said that minecraft or what it was first named "cave game" was a clone of some game called "infiniminer" and check notch's youtube channel, hes nizzotch
well then it must be really hard for you to ever buy a game? ;-)
The problem is, that even if 5-10% only buy "unique" games, most average gamers want games they are familiar with, there is a reason why mainstream games all look the same, it is what people want.
So if you want to pay your bills and put food on the table, you might be forced to create classical games you know people like to play.
I am fully aware of everything about minecraft, so i don't need to research anything.
The L3D project was put on ice a while back due to some performance problems.
these problems has since then been solved in a different project, so it is very possible that i can restart the L3D project within a near future using the new engine :)
Glad you liked it, it was indeed an awesome project! and the move on youtube don't make it justice ether.
Currently all my time goes into my Minecraft remake, but when I'm done with that project i might consider tweaking that engine to be used in L3D as well, it is much faster than L3D ever was, and performance problems was what put the L3D project on ice.
and i don't use the term "clone" since that imply that it would look exactly the same, it is a remake and i have a very modern graphics style, and loads of new unique elements not in the original game.
Whats really interesting is, that people like you don't mind if i make a "clone" of some other game.. as long as it is not minecraft...
minecraft fan-boys seriously need to stop this hysteria around everything that uses blocks.
Fair enough, but there are way to much fan-boy hysteria around MC, but i think people should take a look at my game before they judge.
of all the minecraft clones out there today, my game is probably the one with most different graphics.
But i do think loads of people will be impressed(and happy) with the graphics and the very unique and extremely powerful features in the engine, lets only hope Notch don't like them to much and implement them to :P
uhm... well I'm glad you like it, but what have you been smoking? L3D is nothing like Minecraft? destructible terrain is not something invented in minecraft, and the whole thing with minecraft is that everything is made from blocks, and even if technically my Liero3d engine uses block internally, all holes are round, nothing blocky about it.
but as you probably know, i am working on a minecraft engine as well, and that project is my main focus atm, since its a commercial project.
@FranticEntertainmen yeah, you were replying to somebody else who was doing a "minecraft' thing, which may have been a link from a link off of a "related videos" array or some such. 8)
what FPS games do you like the most, or is the FPS intention just because that's what Liero becomes in 3 dimensions?
Probably the later, Liero feels like a 2D quake to me, and so it felt rather natural to make it into a quake style 3D fps with a 3rd dimension :)
I also have a bad taste in my mouth from Worms3D and 3rd person views.
I do like fps games, but I'm not sure what would be my favorite one, i use to play allot of UnrealTurnament, both the first one, and 2003, recently i think i play mostly RTS however, since all modern fps games tend to look almost the same, but with new maps and texutures.
@FranticEntertainmen whole heartedly agree on the modern FPS games. only decent ones i can think of off the top of my head in the last 10 years or so were Gore and Painkiller. back in the 90s they were all unique, and all had almost radically different and varied weapon arrays. now every FPS is almost interchangeable. 8( they don't even TRY to do anything different or creative in the gameplay anymore. creativity & weapon variety was just a fad apparently!
oh, if we can classify Minecraft as an FPS game(what? its a first person view, and you can shoot arrows!) then i will be forced to say Minecraft is my current favorit FPS :P hehe
my faves have been Quake 2 & Duke3D over the years. Unreal Tourney series also before the Shock Combo, you-are-a-tiny-man-in-a-giants-house/room levels & pride in camping started ruining my online fun. everytime i go back now the Shock Combo cheapness makes me so angry i can't keep playing. people just camping in niches spamming this huge blast radius. long for the fast old school days of fragging. i got to bring that and weapon variety back! 8)
Since i made this test movie(and I'm starting to regret uploading it in current horrible state), i have solved the lighting issues, and when i have solved the last big visual bug, i will make a new much improved video :)
Can you say realistic Minecraft? ;D

How do you determine how much ram is available?
Shapyi 1 year ago
use PerformanceCounter class found in System.Diagnostics
create the object:
ramCounter = new System.Diagnostics.PerformanceCounter("Memory", "Available MBytes");
and whenever you want to check whats left, you call:
ramCounter.NextValue()
thats it, hope it helps :)
