Keep up the great work. Check out my 455 GTO, I think you'll like it and it's interesting how similar our engines sound at idle. It seams like all well built Pontiac 455s have a mean, Pro Stock sounding idle.
@snaproll94e I checked out your vid. Pretty badass. I used to run 62`s on this engine. Now it has 6x`#4`s ported by Dave Bisschop. This motor is old, I mean `80`s old bottom with `96 heads and cam. Iv`e got another 455 on the stand now. HR setup that should be 600`ish hp and torque.
um yea pontiac POWER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i have a question as well i have a casting # 500557 year 76 pontiac 400 with year 67 casting # 143 heads what tips do you sugest
@chevellenut1968 Just don`t go hog wild on power with that block. Maybe 400-425 hp or so, as that block is a little weaker than the older 400`s. Light rods and pistons will help the block live.
Sounds like a few 455s I've heard with Ram Air IV cam, or an aftermarket cam with similar radicalness to the IV???? Too bad Pontiac never made a stock full blow Ram Air IV 455 (came out too late-when emis regs were getting bad). The closest thing was the 73/74 SD455--had a cam with a different part number but totally identical specs to the Ram Air III, but it only had like 8.4 compression and a cast iron EGR smogger intake. No where near a full blown Ram Air, but they still ran low 13s stock!
What kind of intake do you have? It's kinda hard to tell/see because it's black. But at one point it almost looked like a stock 4bbl unit from around 67-71.
I greatly appreciate the info, and just one more question for you I should have asked first because it's my biggest curiosity. -- What RPM do you shift her at for the best acceleration??? I have a 455 in a GP that's decently built (not as cammed as yours, my cam is only slightly more than the HO 068 cam). It truly felt quicker than hell when shifting at 5700/5800. But then the stopwatch revealed it was exactly as quick as 5200rpm--so I now shift at 5200rpm.
I shift at 5600. But, it`s too low for that cam. That cam will go to about 6500 but i have stock rods and i won`t turn it that high. Guess you can say it`s over cammed. That is until i build another one of my 3 455`s.
Even after 30 years, it still amazes me how much power these engines make at such a low/usable RPM, others need revving to oblivion to equal your power at only 5600. Your quick blast to 120mph---It did not seem to be revving high at all, but made tons of power---acceleration did not fall off one bit at high speeds--equal acceleration all the way thru. & your gears seem pretty tall--55mph in Low. The cam you mentioned--I definitely noticed it in the rear/exhaust (duh) part of vid.
@ghana21 You`re better off with an Olds 350 as the block is stronger than the 403.
Try and find a `74 and older block and `70 and older heads as this will get the compression up to around 9.5 to 10 to 1 as compared to 8 to 8.5 on the `71 and up 350`s.
I'll never forget. About 10-15 few years back "HPP mag" had a guy with a stock 71 Lemans T-37 455HO th400auto. He had normal gears-- either 3.23 or 3.08, can't remember. Well anyway, all he did was "supertune" (jetted the q-jet for the max power, put adjustable locknuts on the rocker arms for perfect valve adjust, curved the distributor--it actually still had the stock breaker point ign!) it and used fatter tires. It was running high 12s! Daily driver! PONTIACs RULE!
Last time out was 12.21. But that was with a different carb. than the one in the vid. I`ll get it down into the 11,s with tuning. This is through the mufflers.
my dad had a old full size grand prix, even stock it was a bad ass

More radical than a RA4. Comp P296AH-8

Thanks for info! And that's pretty damn good idle quality considering what you have. That's a great thing about 455s--they can handle a lot of cam.

That`s an Edelbrock Torker 2. I like the sleeper look.
puncht37 4 years ago
That's right, I remember that now about that model of intake.... you are right ... total sleeper look, low profile looking, etc. Thanks

It`s a 1971 Pontiac LeMans T-37. Little brother to the GTO.
