This american minister is an Asshole. I dont like any religion, never have. But this minister from the US makes himself look Stupid, Ignorant and his own community. Also, paints christianity in a even worse light. As if GOD, this imaginary supreme being would ever even think of such earthly mortal stupid things such as wealth and money.
The narrator is the son of the founder of a Swiss Bank, UBS. So, he is pretty comfortable to say the least. Which, makes this effort to tell us that Riches are not everything quite interesting. I personally am not looking for riches as a goal; I want to do what I think is creatively rewarding and have money as a nice side-effect.
And Jesus said: "make money, get a big house, a big car, exploit people, kill children in wartime because war is profitable, support capitalistic pigs or live under Marxist propaganda..." Jesus rejected the American dream and adopted the truth - love is the Almighty.
"Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and then turn and tear you to pieces."
didn't Jesus say something like it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to go to heaven. Something like that and yet that pastor is taking about Jesus wanting you to be rich??
That American pastor is indeed an amateur hack. I wonder if he has even read the Bible. There are good poor and bad poor people, just as there are good rich people and bad rich people in the Bible.
haha... a bunch of black people listening to a preacher yelling at the top of his lungs, holding their hands up, shouting, dancing and crying just makes me LMAO... hahaha..
if success is above one's expectations then that boosts one's self esteem
but if you reverse it
self esteem=expectations/success
then that will give you the answer to this status anxiety thing.
If one's expecting too much out of his own success then that leaves them comparing their selves to others which then lead to envy thus being anxious about his/her status.
The book covers the same themes, but obviously, there's more there than can be covered in a short miniseries. His writing style is very entertaining and engaging. Very good read. Try his excellent book "The Consolations of Philosophy", too. That was the one that really got me into his writings.
Not sure that he followed the Socratic principles he spoke so well of in his other work. What if those people value money because it comforts them to think that one day they can care for loved ones? It's not clear that absolutely everyone who values money does so for purely selfish reasons. Even if they do, perhaps it says more about our inability to determine what actually makes us happy and less about the 'American system' that imposes this behaviour on us. His argument needs more work
@hershsahai : That's true. I reckon that the insistence on being happy all the time is just as much a factor as expectations of others, in making people more worried. Happiness is a by-product of what we do, and not the other way round. It seems that people can't accept the fact that all feelings are transient.
I think that pastor we'll have to rethink his philosophy and interpretations of Christianity and economic success. Religion has been a "business" for a very long time, and it will continue that way so long as there are people who wish to use it and God for their own success.
when he talked about self esteem = success/expectation in a previous part, it was very interesting. I think it is people like the pastor that are raising the expectation to unreasonable levels.
Indeed but I just want to make sure I understand this. So if one has too much expectations (or more like big expectations like "I wanna be an astronaut/cowboy/super model/actor/ect") and when those expectations are not fulfilled, one's self-esteem lowers. Am I correct?
Heh... I really liked the pastor's logic (from about 2:35-2:59) where he talks about Jesus' richness yet how he was poor, and how that means that we as poor people need to become rich.
Props for having the foresight to intelligently defend Christian faith in the face of today's climate, rather than simply dismiss it as crap. Very human explanation as to the guts of why people find virtue a humbling faith.
I'm really glad you enjoyed it, some of his insights can really be life-changing if taken to heart. I'll be posting the other two parts of this series soon.
"Jesus became poor so we can be rich on earth"

That pastor cannot possibly believe what he says. His premise fell apart with 2 questions from Alain. His head couldn't be that far up his behind.

Christianity and United States are going to the same path of the Roman Empire and their Polytheism, to the ground and memories of a history book.
