No, it wasn't an accident. It was the result of bad management and ignorance. Mother elephants first spend years tending their infant brothers and sisters, under the tutelage of their mothers, aunties and elder sisters long before they ever come into season themselves. This elephant obviously never had that advantage and whose fault is that? Not the elephants but the zoo management..
In an ideal world there would be no elephants held captive in zoos. Live elephants would be replaced by advanced, interactive, virtual reality elephant exhibits, where people learn why elephants shouldn't be kept in confinement. Multimedia theaters and web cameras would allow the public to view documentary films, and to follow wild elephants in their natural environment.
It's no accident that elephants have a shorter lifespan in captivity (on avg. 40 years) than in the wild (60-70).
Captive eles have a higher rate of arthritis, foot disease, weight problems, TB, neurotic behavior, infanticide, stil lbirth, miscarriages than their wild counterparts.
The simple fact is eles are socially/physically complex creatures that don't belong in zoos.
If you <3 eles, support projects that conserve them in their native habitats. e.g sheldrickwildlifetrust. org
Its sad that this happened, and it was an accident, but had the elephant got to grow up in a real herd in the wild, she would have known how to handle a baby from being around her mom, grandma, aunts and cousins. this is why people protest zoos. they never intended for this to happen, and were probably genuinely heartbroken, but the elephant learn how to take care of a baby in captivity without the support of her herd.
Man, this was BORING. I could have looked up the 3 blurry pictures 1000x faster on google without having to sit through 2 & a half boring-ass minutes of text and sappy sad music! Youtube is supposed to be VIDEOS, not shitty, low-res picture slide shows. *YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWN* thumbs down!!
Are you always this stupid? That elephant couldn't give a shit about how much money her human keepers spent on getting her pregnant. She was nervous and the mental and physical problems of life in captivity were clearly brought upon her by human beings so yes, our greed and selfishness was responsible for this baby's death.
Esp. given, that elephant experts like Joyce Poole and scientific research says captivity is WRONG for emotionally complex creatures like elephants.
The fact that Asali's in captivity may be responsible for her nervousness which led to the accident. Shame on the zoo for spending $15000 on impregnating a single elephant when that money could have wisely been given to an anti-poaching unit for a game reserve in Africa or Asia where elephants breed on their own and socialize each other into being great elephant mothers.
The zoo is selfishly securing its own future by breeding wild animals which can breed on their own.
This video has gotta be the most ridiculous video we'v seen. It's supposed to be a VIDEO but u get maybe 8 -9 pictures the rest is in writing and should be on a site where it is the norm to write a blog. Why this guy ever added it is beyond me
I think the mother elephant killed her baby to save her from a life of suffering in a tiny cage and used for entertainment and profits by another species.
it was an accident.. and to act as if you know it all, because of what you had heard shows you to be an idito and obviously have bad blood with the zoo.. so respect the loss and move on.. it was an accident..
I really don't have bad blood with them. This is just how it is. Did or did not the expert say that he had never heard of an elephant killing a baby by accident?
@Poneutria If you are from TN why would anyone approve of elephants in zoos? When you have the beautiful elephant sanctuary. Also this video says they are trying to increase the captive population. lol this is ridiculous as zoos never release their ele's back to the wild so why would they do that except for profit. This zoo sounds upset they couldn't ensalve another elephant for human entertainment.
Are you really this ignorant? The zoo's own expert said he had heard of a baby being killed by its mother on purpose, but never by accident. I worked there. They have no room and are neurotic. She killed the baby. They will never let you know that because of the way that place works, but that is what happened.
No video of the killing so nobody cares.

It was a voluntary elephantslaughter.
Poneutria's point seems quite reasonable though.
