@apex588 Well it's my oppinion of cause (and I'm DM'ing in 3.5 for the record). To many feats makes weird combos that cancels out challenges in the game, also making some attacks flawless and without risk of missing. Also nobody remembers the feat text so everybody is constantly looking them up in the books. But the problem only occures when you allow feats from all books and all official wizards material, limit players to Player's Handbook and let them "apply" for the feats in other material
I play Saga Edition and am very happy with it. Jedi can have Force powers (free of a lot of prerequisites) and skills. I like the d20 Modern-esque "meta class" concept. You can create many different kinds of characters from those. And who in their right mind would play a Fringer in the previous version? If I have any real complaint it would be that the construction system for starships and vehicles is rather nebulous. Still, it's a shame Wizards no longer makes it.
I don't play rpgs any longer and I can sit and watch this guy talk about them all day. I'm glad I don't live near you because my life would leave me from spending too much time getting this guy's opinion. Your natural 20 when comes to gabbing about rpgs my friend.
Great review! I'm not into RPG, this would be my first, but I ordered this on Amazon ($65 used!) with some gift cards and I think it's going to be a -lot- of fun. I have previewed the book a bit, and this review pretty much hits the nail on the head. I have some of the miniatures, which is encouraged in this book but not necessary (although the miniatures maps I think will be nice to have). Thanks so much Kurt!
@darthbane53 yes i ran a short campaign just using the core book. The down side is that you don't have that much to play with when it come to pre-gen encounters. I just make them by hand or on the fly.
I played D6 once, a long time ago, and I didn't like its rules, which felt a bit abstract and just not so "Star Warsy". Saga really makes you feel like you're in the Star Wars universe. I do agree that the rules can be too authoritative in that they explain exactly what to do in every conceivable situation, but on the other hand, it's so easy to just ignore what you don't need and focus on the tons of great stuff you do like. I think Saga is the best SWRPG so far.
@maxrockes In my opinion, you should go to ebay or amazon and concentrate your fund on the old style west end games D6 Star Wars game. It was widely popular, simplistic and put the power of the game into the hands of the GM and Players, NOT the rules. Then again, thats just an opinion.
@soiledshortz That could be good for D&D though, since they can concentrate on making the 4th Edtion work this time hehe... not that I care though particularly.
I've always been skeptical of SAGA until this point, but after the last session I played, admittedly with beginners, and 3 encounters took 2 hours, I'm thinking of going for something more streamlined....
I liked the way D6 handled Force powers but I can agree that it doesn't emulate the prequel trilogy style of Force use quite so well. Then again, I prefer the "classic trilogy" approach to Jedi and Force powers so it's not so much of an issue for my purposes.
Saga Edition started strong but with the saturation of feats and talents that every single subsequent sourcebook have released, it's becoming a bloated mess.
Just a question from a rather confused newcomer to this game. Where do I put the melee and ranged attack bonuses on the character sheet? Please answer.
I have always promoted my interest in the D6 Star Wars books and system because of its simplicity and lack of super anal rules. I believe you will have an excellent time playing this if you take the time to do so. Remember....the gamemaster rules.....the books are more of a guideline.....you can actually as a gamemaster modify the rules to you and your groups liking. DONT restricted yourself to the print. Its the story and the party that make the difference.......NOT the rules.
You will also need to make copies of the character sheets at the back of any Star Wars core rule book. Oh yeah and some paper. I plan on putting an ACTUAL Star Wars RPG filmed and put on YouTube soon so I can display how I run my adventures.....maybe to help others decide how they want to run theirs.
So all we need is the book? I just went on a feild trip to a mall and I was looking around and saw a store called Games Workshop. It has Warhammer, LOTR and Warhammer 40k. I played warhammer with a friend and a guy helped us learn to play. I later ask another friend at school about it and asked because I am a huge fan of star wars if I wanted to play a star was RPG game (Which is the book you are holding) I was ready to play right then. So He said he would buy the book get some friends then I.
Okay....go on ebay website and bid on (Star Wars RPG West End games)....this will get you the core rule book. Then you must obtain at least 10 six sided dice. Then as you need different books you can go to ebay and obtain the galaxy guide books, ships books and so on. You will have a BLAST playing. Good luck and may the RPG force be with you.
I agree with SirWilliam here. It is IMPOSSIBLE to play a space fantasy adventure roleplaying game without thinkging of Star Wars. I think It should be all alone in the system settings (like the D6) also just an opinion. Its not as hard as you'd like think to aquire the D6 Star Wars books. Ebay will provide EVERYTHING you need to play, that is if you cant find it in an old book or gaming store. Either way, D6, D20 , no matter..if you have a good GM Star Wars is a blast.
I don't think you'd gain anything by waiting; I very much doubt Wizards is going to replace Saga Edition in the near future (they have a release schedule plotted out for it for some time ahead), and I don't think any other publisher would get the licence either. Saga is the best d20SW by far, so it's either that or d6 IMHO. Both have good and bad points, but d6 is long out of print and hard to get a good collection going for.
Im sorry I just dont believe Star Wars should have EVER went D20.......in my opinion it should have stayed D6 (just an opinion, no offense)......I LOVE the D20 system..........but like the movies Star Wars (in my opinion) should been in a class all its own.
4e is also d20 (d20+ability+skills+modifiers). What are you talking about? And it is not surprising that 4e took alot of stuff from SWSE since it came out... like 6 months before and pretty much the same people worked on it.
Why so much focus on the rules, they are all overly crunchy feeding the illusion that the GM isn't making critical decisions in the "shared simulation" anyway. Any GM worth their salt can determine (with a simple mechanic and a character sheet) reasonable outcomes for any conceivable action. The story and characters are where the fun (and the challenge) comes, who cares what the mechanic is. Simulating a world is not possible with printed rules, so the system is not important the GM is.
And so? Change it, it's your game... Bring it in, if it enhances your game, if not, leave it out. Or play in an era where there is no canon to think about. A few thousand years before the films, there are millenia with no canon source. Or go after the legacy era, or between EpIII and EpIV, there is much room.
Or you could even change everything, why not have your party destroy the Deathstar and kill the emperor...
This review is spot-on to how I feel about Saga. One of my players is a hardcore fan of the Revised Edition, but after afew sessions, I've turned him into a Saga fan.
