  • i knew bozzio could play some music without that exaggerated kit.

  • Zappa may well have wrote the black page drum score to test terry bozo's ability but if he gave it to dirk verbeuren , dirk would say "well that's my cock busy so what do ya want me to do with my hands"

  • @scottwork1 Maybe it's just me, but Verbeurens playing mainly consists of simple blast beats played at great speed.. That style has nothing to do with this really, so it's kinda hard to judge by that, since we haven't really heard Verbeuren play this style(probably because he doesn't do it quite as good as this).. He is a master of death metal though.

  • @scottwork1 Amusing if not factual

  • @spillage66 I thought it was a mistake too but I actually really liked the way it sounded... almost as if he was swinging it or something. Seemed to me like a great idea that was formed by a little mistake.

  • Where can I get a recording of The Black Page 1 and 2? And how long are they?

  • Ooooops!!!! 1:57, he makes a fuck up on the bass pedal! :o Excellent, apart from that "human" part.

  • @Spillage66 Nope, not a mistake, check it out...

  • @maxwellbutton It is indeed a mistake, but it's at 1:58, and there's a lag on the second bass pedal beat. Human error. Many things could cause this, from posture, balance, to tiredness...it's being human. :)

  • I talk alot of hit about Terry Bozzio however I compeltey respect the man. There has never been a clip I've seen ofhim were he is not putting everything he has into his playing and music. Yes, the long rolls on toms and 32nd note patterns have become a bit predictable in his solo work however he plays every note with every ounce of energy he has. The instrument would not be evolved without his influence.

  • this is a vey accomplished and well rehearsed band

  • the ultimate drum song...

  • Cocaine is a hell of a drug.

  • @DyingSID666 Yup it is but what does it have to do with Terry Bozzio?

  • best of the world

  • animosity's version is doper

  • love this ...

  • I hate when the top comments are answering another comment !

  • @DJLeh7959 it's not hard to get the meaning from the context. it's a reply that lets you know that someone was downing the video or saying that so-and-so did it better...

  • No way! Love it. And the camera does him justice.

  • can bozzio get normal crash cymbals

  • @space78511

with the chinese cymbals you can easyer play after notes the crahes vibrates more and makes unwanted sounds, they are more for brakes or rythm. don't get me wrong though because this is more of an perfectionists way of looking at it. Terry is one of the best in the world and he would not be able to play Zappa without being a perfectionist.

    Use Dax!!!

  • thumbs up if you think that terry plays better on a smaller kit(like this one) than his larger kit(that he uses now)...

  • @VictorSimplePlan10 fuck you bitch. joey is fucked up gay. i kill you

  • @coubensis suck my dick motherfucker do you wanna kill me then come over here!

  • @VictorSimplePlan10 If you're not trolling, I genuinely feel sorry for you, believing that!

  • @VictorSimplePlan10 No, Terry is more skilled

  • @VictorSimplePlan10 LOL you're a funny fucking noobface.

  • Nicely played! Accurate and also very musical!

  • Bozzio!

  • you suck

  • Craft, energy, dedication, musicality, wow!!

  • JackOfThePack, you're right,Frank had the "Vibes" player doing percussion, like tympanies, cymbals, and wood blocks. For awhile it was Ruth Underwood,(that sounds like a name Frank might make up),then Ed Mann, there again.

  • unreal...just....unreal drumming....and to think my children like Hanna Montana....sigh...don't know what to do anymore....

  • its not Vishnú, its not Chuck Norris... it's Terry Bozzio...

  • A splash on the snare ?...right on !

  • Mum: "were is all my cooking-gear gone to?''

Kid: I dont know, ask terry

  • i enjoyed that bozzio played with "small kit" ! ha ha!

  • I was at this concert and there was indeed another drummer, Terry was just the guest for part of the show-- the other drummer was Joe Travers.

  • At 1:50 you can easily hear a ride cymbal bell as well that Bozzio is not playing. I haven't seen the show (sadly), but it's not unlikely that they have a second percussionist. Frank Zappa often had.

  • Isn't this The Black Page #2?

  • Uhhhhhh it's him playing

  • Damn hes got an amazing grip on groooove!!!

  • At 1:51 you also hear a ride cymbal yet hes playing no ride.

  • Cripes... Joe Travers is on stage as the main drummer.

  • Hey people please don't talk nonsense !

This is Terry Bozzio and he plays the drums without ''track'' ok ???

And yes there is another drumer,BOZZIO is special guest here.just buy the dvd and you see him with his monster kit what he is capable of doing !

  • Insane!

  • Zappa Zappa ZepZ[0]r rulxort !!!

  • Bozzio is a fucking good drummer!

  • @worldcitizenforever You obviously havnt heard a day in the life

  • @sauronhall

And I suppose your drumming idol is Travis Barker. Correct?

  • @007simleking

Dude. Bozzio was clearly one of Portnoy's influences. Shut the fuck up, and learn some respect.

  • @HevvyMettlRokkr BOTH are two of the worst drummers. end.

  • @HevvyMettlRokkr He also cites Lars Ulrich as one of his influences, and we know Lars sucks. Now on the more serious side, Terry is better drummer, but Mike is better musician. That is said because Terry can do things no human can, but done without feelings, like a machine.

  • @AlexLococo wow!! terry bozzio a machine? what a strange machine you know! he simply..plays..with FZ, with vai, with uk, with his wife, with wackerman..a fantastic musician..please, read his curriculum..one of the 3 drummer able to play the black page..strong..powerful..sharp..he does play with heart, but his one beats on a 19/36 score..not "boo-boom" :-)

  • @jonesthecat00 Yeah, but most songs aren't actually composed by him. When he attempts to play jazz, I only hear complex time signatures, but nothing that sounds actually good. Complex doesn't surprise me if I'm not going to actually enjoy the music as music; he makes music math: not cool.

  • @AlexLococo If you watched Adventure time, you would know that math and cool are synonyms.

  • @SubwayStar7 You, sir, made the only valid argument ever.

  • ZPZ uses two Drummers

Bozzio Kills all of them :P

  • Happy Birthday, Terry! Yes, it's today, 27-12-1950. It's been an incredible and interesting 60 years, and here's to the next 60 years!

  • Happy Birthday, Terry! Yes, it's today, 27-12. It's been an incredible and interesting 60 years, and here's to the next 60 years!

  • Yes. There is another percussionist. Watch Zappa Plays Zapp: The Black Page #1 & #2 It shows them both.

  • there were 2 drummers for this concert, TB was a guest for this song...

  • There are two drummers in the Zappa Plays Zappa concerts. The other drummer (and main guy) is Joe Travers. Travers is playing behind Bozzio to his right on a drum riser and is laying a foundation groove while Bozzio solo's.

  • No man he's got two arms you can't see doing the impossible shit! Haha

  • so kingy boy, u can do better huh?? i think not , keep dreamin'

  • That was a Powerful display of skill. Shame on you meanies. It was Excellent in the Front Row Pal!~ Tune was Here!

  • King Sethos,

    Terry would never cheat.

Zappa called him "my two drummers".

At 00:14 look at the right side of the screen where a cymbal is moving.

And just after that you hear snare back beat,

while Terry's hands are over the floor tom.

So maybe it's a drum duet really.

(Sorry if I sent you two messages!)

  • My drum sticks weep for their fallen comrades every time they see Bozzio hittin all his right side up Chinas

  • good drummer, yep. I just saw the Carl Palmer trio (he's a pretty good drummer)... i think Bozzio is more interesting...

  • Desde cucamonga para usted!!!

  • dzik

  • terry is the best!!!!!!!!

  • Just wanted to say. . Brilliant ! - but couldn't - so I've typed it instead. Bozzio is the dogs bollocks. Shame he ended up in Korn.

  • you want 2 months to learn to play in time in this 2 minutes!

    wow! what a music!

  • Listen to Bozzio play on Korn's song I will protect you! Awesome!

  • he's a great drummer

  • wow Bozzio's got a small kit for this concert!

  • @rozeem6 you know, I saw him live with his huge drum kit, with holdsworth and levin and it was fucking disappointing and I'm a great fan of Holdsworth and Bozzio... they really played the whole time a fucking intro, and Bozzio used less elements than here...

    This is awesome however!

  • @rozeem6 it look like naked, without the complete set...

  • Don Moye wirh the Art Ensemble of Chicago, wipes this. Not to mention Tim Daisy with the Vandermark 5. Or anything Steve McCall did with Air trio.

  • Neil Peart's a good rock drummer, but compared to Bozzio, he's one dimensional. Terry can play anything.

  • if your gonna knock it,,,,,play it and post it....i dont think so

  • I'm not saying he sucks on this take. He only looks a bit tired, that's all.

  • To compare Bozzio to Buddy Rich or Neil Peart is like comparing Babe Ruth to Mickey Mantle or Willie Mays. Bozzio is clearly one of the best to ever walk the planet!

  • @grandpied one moment.....i agree with neil peart, but buddy rich is 100 times better than bozzio.

  • @NiggaWhatChannel Buddy Rich was definitely the Babe Ruth of the bunch and what it's all about — hitting home runs. Chick Webb, during his short life, was certainly a force to reckon with and was a major influence on Buddy. In fact without Chick there may not have been a Buddy as we know him. I'd have to agree Buddy was the best drummer of all-times just as Arnold Schwarzenegger was the best bodybuilder.

  • @grandpied Well put! The best at there chosen profession!

  • he's a good player

but i have yet to come across anything i like by him

  • Terry Bozzio.......obviously one hell of a player or Zappa wouldn't have hired him ! Few can play those charts.....

  • Bella la prospettiva..

  • terry bozzio sucks... no crashes.. come on?... and not even close of having the best technique either.. there are much better drummers out there

  • @juliosaca I agree that there are better drummers out there than bozzio. However, bozzio is so unique. Example: Mike Mangini is an outstandingly good drummer (and one of my favorites) with perfect technique but he plays like a robot. Bozzio gives the drums a voice. Plus you have to give respect to anyone who plays Zappa on any instrument.

  • terry bozzio sucks

  • @juliosaca quantify that statement?

  • @smackythefrog23 while bozzio is clearly amazing i would say neil peart mike portnoy and buddy ric hare better "drummers" by that i mean bozzio plays his drum kit like a piano not a classic drum kit

  • @xXBmWGtR3Xx Are you high brother? Look at the live vid of Missing Persons doing US Drag! Terry Can and will smoke Neil Pert and send him off in a cart over the hills! You heard it here first!

  • @rocknrollhoocheecoo nah guy peart all the way but im biased cuz im canadian

  • Uhhhh.....is he playing with another drummer or a drum track??? I mean, really. Look VERY closely at about 1:31 in, WHO IS PLAYING THE QUICK drum roll on the snare? It's not him.

  • @KingSethos he was playing as guest drummer with zappa plays zappa, alongside the band's normal (and also awesome) drummer Joe Travers.

  • @KingSethos yeah he is playing with another drummer, at 0:24 he misses four snare hits then comes back to hit them right after. and plus at 0:16 if u look in the right hand corner you can see some cymbals hit on beat one.

  • @KingSethos He's playing with Dweezil's drummer for the Zappa Plays Zappa shows. Brilliant combo. Saw them live.

  • @KingSethos Yes, there was another drummer on stage, and also a percussionist. The percussionist played that part. If you ever have a chance to see ZPZ, GO! Bozzio won't likely be there, but you never know....

  • @KingSethos at think he has another snare...but i see what you mean

  • @KingSethos The Mothers and other Zappa support bands usually included a percussionist, Ruth Underwood being one of them, who in addition to tuned mallet percussion, would also play drum snares and toms. Definitely no drum track here. There is simply no way to play sync to a drum track of the dreaded BLACK PAGE, IMO.

  • @KingSethos

It's not the only point where you hear and "extra" drum notes or phrases.

But at 00:14 look at the right side of the screen where a cymbal is moving.

And just after that, you hear snare back beat while Terry's hands are over the floor tom.

    Maybe it's a duet really.

  • @KingSethos

y, and look at 1:20, he stops playing on the hi hat but u can still hear it ...

  • @KingSethos Joe Travis is playing the other drum track

  • @KingSethos he's playing with another drummer... if you even bothered watching the full video -_-

  • @KingSethos Joe Travers. This is clearly from the ZPZ tour.

  • @KingSethos Billy Hulting is the percussionist w/ ZPZ. They are occasionally known to hit drums with sticks. Sometimes while the drummer is playing.

  • @KingSethos Maybe you should actually watch the video and see the other guy...

  • @KingSethos Yes, I think Terry is playing with another drummer. If you watch closely at the edge of the screen on the right, another drum kit is barely visible and they both make a crash hit together at 0:14.

  • @KingSethos There is a percussionist in the band. This member often plays a number of instruments including bells, chimes, concert snare rolls, even duck noises.

He was used to fill in backing rhythms or effects back when we did not have samplers or loop tracks.

  • @KingSethos There is a percussionist in the band. This member often plays a number of instruments including bells, chimes, concert snare rolls, even duck noises.

He was used to fill in backing rhythms or effects back when we did not have samplers or loop tracks.

But that said Bozzio is a fuckin beast.

  • @KingSethos i was at that show, there was a second drummer

  • @KingSethos in the dvd of zappa plays zappa theres another drummer who is the main drummer for the band. terry is just a guest drummer. i think thats who.

either that or he plays it with his right hand on the drum you can't see. he's pretty fast with rolls with one hand. but i think thats a tom

  • @KingSethos There's another drummer in the band. TB is only a guest on this and another song or two.

  • its Joe Travers, the regular drummer for Zappa Plays Zappa@KingSethos

  • @KingSethos The other drummer?

  • @KingSethos hey man, youve got good eyes! never woud have spotted that!! wats goin on? surely they aint "cheatin?"Are you a drummer, guess you are.well spotted.

  • @KingSethos there are up to 3 drummers i believe..

  • @KingSethos Yes, it's the official ZPZ drummer. Joe Travers. Great drummer.

  • @KingSethos He's playing with other 2 or 3 drummers

  • @KingSethos at the very beginning you can see a cymbal move on another set, but you can't see the player so i don't know who it could be.

  • @KingSethos There's more than one drummer.

  • @KingSethos There's another drummer and a percussionist on stage. Search for Zappa Plays Zappa Black Page and you can see the full set-up.

  • @KingSethos is the other drummer who tours with dweezle playing along with

  • @KingSethos Bozzio plays with 2 snare drums pretty much all the time.

  • @KingSethos there were two drummers for these shows. (first zpz tour in '06) saw the halloween show in nyc. bozzio only did a few numbers as a guest artist, along with vai.

  • @KingSethos He actually plays that with a special pedal attached to his ass

  • @KingSethos duble bounce buddy, he loosens up his grip on a single hit and it sounds like two.

  • @KingSethos It could be lag between the video and the audio, but you could be right as well.

  • @KingSethos

    has to be Joe Travers

  • Just for people who can't believe it's in 4/4, just tap the tempo he taps on the hi hat around 0:16 with your foot, it'll feel odd at times but you'll notice it returns to a 4/4 feel later in the song and many of the bass + cymbal hit accents land on 1 of various bars :>

  • The Black Page was written specifically for Terry Bozzio- Zappa wrote it, put it in front if TB at a rehearsal and said "Play that Bozzio!"-- Terry took it home and learned it in a few days-- he said that he took it bar by bar and it took him a few practice sessions to get it-- the rest is history!!!!

The whole piece is in 4/4, and as stated in some if these posts, it's the odd rhythmic groupings that make it sound so "not" in 4/4-

  • that was definately great.

  • can someone tell me why black page is considered drummer's nightmares???

  • @cchhiittoo 1) For starters, it's in a simple meter but the polyrhythms are all across the map. You have to simultaneously keep rock-steady time and play five-rhythms, seven-rhythms, all at once.

    2) It's all written out in full. The thing about FZ's music is there is very little left for the performer to add. Aside from choosing exactly which tom or cymbal to use, Terry is doing EXACTLY to the note what FZ indicated. There is no chance.

  • @Qermaq thank you for the anwer!!

  • @cchhiittoo It's the sheer statistical density of the piece. It's called "The Black Page" because of the amount notes on the manuscript. Time must be kept while playing numerous patterns and rudimentation. Classical percussionists are able to perform this piece in ensemble but to ask a drummer to do it on a kit is a tall order, and regardless of what you read in the comments on You Tube, there are few kit drummers that can approach it. It's a bitch to learn and perform.

  • Marco minneman would be an amazing drummer for zappa because his timing is phenominal and he has an awesome style.

  • @guitardeathcoredrums Im with you.

  • I mean, really, who is dumb enough to say this guy sucks?

  • The rev was playing this at the age of 10.

If you dont know who he is, he was the drummer for Avenged Sevenfold before he passed away in 2009.

He won best drummer of the year that year ahead of every single drummer in the world. =)

  • @SuperQuickscoper Terry Bozzio is a musician. The "Rev" was a waste of breath and the world is better for him rotting in the ground. Get out.

  • @godlovesninjas whoa a little harsh, hate his idiot fans, he wasn't that terrible of a drummer, and thats pretty disrespectful to a dead person it's sad that he is dead. I see your point, but with a little more humanism behind it.

  • @SuperQuickscoper Sorry man the rev was one of my main influences when i started drumming because he had an EPIC style which was easily notifiable as his own but compared to these guys he was pritty average.

    RIP Rev.

  • @SuperQuickscoper Get the fuck out of here. Ahead of every single drummer in the world, because he won a "best drummer of the year contest?" Not to disrespect the dead, but seriously. There are MANY more drummers who are (and I say this from playing style) better than Rev. Im not saying the Rev couldnt play, but I can name many drummers that deserve "the best drummer in the world" title for a year over the Rev.

  • @SuperQuickscoper You're comparing the Rev to Terry Bozzio!?!? Shut the fuck up!!!! ROFLMAO You don't even understand how stupid you just made yourself look!!!! LMAO Wow talk about ignorance!!!! Mike Portnoy is going to be a blessing to that band.... That's what mainstream music does to you, it get you caught up in a world of ignorance.

  • Bozzio . . . a true master!!

  • ANY drummer with a brain about what he does must respect this...AMAZING stuff peoplez.

  • I WANT HIS BRAIN

  • ....i'm burning my drumsticks..

  • genius testiculus

  • Muito Cruel....

  • Frank Zappa was a genius...he knew how to pull his band too different and new heights and challenge them and he did just that with the Black Page.

  • lol look at the little cymbal above his right knee itsh shoooooo cooooote XD

    only kidding

i think zappa made this song/piece just to piss off any drummer, so much coordination, brilliant

  • Anyone who says Bozzio sucks is not a musician and never has been a musician. He is playing multiple notes in time with the other musicians--do you know how hard that is? He's not off on his own doing a bullshit drum solo where timing doesn't matter. If he was off in the slightest, it would show and suck. And to be doing it at his age, Jesus, Mary and Joseph! You may not like his style, but the skill level is obvious to a real musician.

  • @guyfihi The Black Page...a drum solo "where timing doen't matter" !!!???

Man...Seriously go get a thing to do but stop making statements about Music & Musicians...

    Good Night AssHole !!

  • Hard to get this better

  • Does anybody know what venue this was filmed at?

  • the Black Page was written by FZ specifically for Terry Bozzio- story is Zappa gave it to Terry and said "Play that Bozzio!"- Terry took it home and learned it in a few practice sessions, came back to Zappa and played it for him -

    the rest is history...

Check out this Bozzio inspired drum solo-

search "Drum Solo in 3 Movements"

  • Pretty good job Terry, you're getting there:)

  • @kuhchicken LOL

  • cool

  • great jam great drumming berkley what ever

  • I guess this is like an acquired taste of music cause I can't feel like a good vibration at all :S, I prefer totally the classic technique of buddy rich, or the contemporary technique of thomas lang or tony royster jr., it's more like a virtuoso and effective technique,no intension of offending someone, but this sounds a little like a drug n alcohol week with a midi controller and a host sequencer.

  • @andrewdrummer That's exactly what it is, acquired. Music is what it is and all it can do is to be the exact interpretation it was intended to be. If it's meaning is lost to a listener's inability to feel it it still hasn't lost anything.

Just because an infected lung can't breathe doesn't negate the purpose of oxygen.

Music is written from the standpoint of the creator not the listener and

vise versa. It resonates or it doesn't. Not liking it doesn't make you wrong.

    Peace

  • fauxing INCREDIBLE

  • ripped

  • worldcitizenforever - there is no best drummer. There are good and there are bad drummers, terry and ringo are both good drummers for there genre. no questions asked, end of discussion. you have a good one, mate!

  • Wow - the BLACK page. Yeah, man. it is so, like....hard. You know what's hard? Try playing try playing the bass drum part from Stravinsky's Rite Of Spring. Then tell us about hard.
