I talk alot of hit about Terry Bozzio however I compeltey respect the man. There has never been a clip I've seen ofhim were he is not putting everything he has into his playing and music. Yes, the long rolls on toms and 32nd note patterns have become a bit predictable in his solo work however he plays every note with every ounce of energy he has. The instrument would not be evolved without his influence.
@DJLeh7959 it's not hard to get the meaning from the context. it's a reply that lets you know that someone was downing the video or saying that so-and-so did it better...
with the chinese cymbals you can easyer play after notes the crahes vibrates more and makes unwanted sounds, they are more for brakes or rythm. don't get me wrong though because this is more of an perfectionists way of looking at it. Terry is one of the best in the world and he would not be able to play Zappa without being a perfectionist.
JackOfThePack, you're right,Frank had the "Vibes" player doing percussion, like tympanies, cymbals, and wood blocks. For awhile it was Ruth Underwood,(that sounds like a name Frank might make up),then Ed Mann, there again.
At 1:50 you can easily hear a ride cymbal bell as well that Bozzio is not playing. I haven't seen the show (sadly), but it's not unlikely that they have a second percussionist. Frank Zappa often had.
@HevvyMettlRokkr He also cites Lars Ulrich as one of his influences, and we know Lars sucks. Now on the more serious side, Terry is better drummer, but Mike is better musician. That is said because Terry can do things no human can, but done without feelings, like a machine.
@AlexLococo wow!! terry bozzio a machine? what a strange machine you know! he simply..plays..with FZ, with vai, with uk, with his wife, with wackerman..a fantastic musician..please, read his curriculum..one of the 3 drummer able to play the black page..strong..powerful..sharp..he does play with heart, but his one beats on a 19/36 score..not "boo-boom" :-)
@jonesthecat00 Yeah, but most songs aren't actually composed by him. When he attempts to play jazz, I only hear complex time signatures, but nothing that sounds actually good. Complex doesn't surprise me if I'm not going to actually enjoy the music as music; he makes music math: not cool.

@KingSethos in the dvd of zappa plays zappa theres another drummer who is the main drummer for the band. terry is just a guest drummer. i think thats who.
either that or he plays it with his right hand on the drum you can't see. he's pretty fast with rolls with one hand. but i think thats a tom
@KingSethos hey man, youve got good eyes! never woud have spotted that!! wats goin on? surely they aint "cheatin?"Are you a drummer, guess you are.well spotted.
@KingSethos there were two drummers for these shows. (first zpz tour in '06) saw the halloween show in nyc. bozzio only did a few numbers as a guest artist, along with vai.
Just for people who can't believe it's in 4/4, just tap the tempo he taps on the hi hat around 0:16 with your foot, it'll feel odd at times but you'll notice it returns to a 4/4 feel later in the song and many of the bass + cymbal hit accents land on 1 of various bars :>
The Black Page was written specifically for Terry Bozzio- Zappa wrote it, put it in front if TB at a rehearsal and said "Play that Bozzio!"-- Terry took it home and learned it in a few days-- he said that he took it bar by bar and it took him a few practice sessions to get it-- the rest is history!!!!
The whole piece is in 4/4, and as stated in some if these posts, it's the odd rhythmic groupings that make it sound so "not" in 4/4-
@cchhiittoo 1) For starters, it's in a simple meter but the polyrhythms are all across the map. You have to simultaneously keep rock-steady time and play five-rhythms, seven-rhythms, all at once.
2) It's all written out in full. The thing about FZ's music is there is very little left for the performer to add. Aside from choosing exactly which tom or cymbal to use, Terry is doing EXACTLY to the note what FZ indicated. There is no chance.
@cchhiittoo It's the sheer statistical density of the piece. It's called "The Black Page" because of the amount notes on the manuscript. Time must be kept while playing numerous patterns and rudimentation. Classical percussionists are able to perform this piece in ensemble but to ask a drummer to do it on a kit is a tall order, and regardless of what you read in the comments on You Tube, there are few kit drummers that can approach it. It's a bitch to learn and perform.
@godlovesninjas whoa a little harsh, hate his idiot fans, he wasn't that terrible of a drummer, and thats pretty disrespectful to a dead person it's sad that he is dead. I see your point, but with a little more humanism behind it.
@SuperQuickscoper Sorry man the rev was one of my main influences when i started drumming because he had an EPIC style which was easily notifiable as his own but compared to these guys he was pritty average.
@SuperQuickscoper Get the fuck out of here. Ahead of every single drummer in the world, because he won a "best drummer of the year contest?" Not to disrespect the dead, but seriously. There are MANY more drummers who are (and I say this from playing style) better than Rev. Im not saying the Rev couldnt play, but I can name many drummers that deserve "the best drummer in the world" title for a year over the Rev.
@SuperQuickscoper You're comparing the Rev to Terry Bozzio!?!? Shut the fuck up!!!! ROFLMAO You don't even understand how stupid you just made yourself look!!!! LMAO Wow talk about ignorance!!!! Mike Portnoy is going to be a blessing to that band.... That's what mainstream music does to you, it get you caught up in a world of ignorance.
Anyone who says Bozzio sucks is not a musician and never has been a musician. He is playing multiple notes in time with the other musicians--do you know how hard that is? He's not off on his own doing a bullshit drum solo where timing doesn't matter. If he was off in the slightest, it would show and suck. And to be doing it at his age, Jesus, Mary and Joseph! You may not like his style, but the skill level is obvious to a real musician.
the Black Page was written by FZ specifically for Terry Bozzio- story is Zappa gave it to Terry and said "Play that Bozzio!"- Terry took it home and learned it in a few practice sessions, came back to Zappa and played it for him -
I guess this is like an acquired taste of music cause I can't feel like a good vibration at all :S, I prefer totally the classic technique of buddy rich, or the contemporary technique of thomas lang or tony royster jr., it's more like a virtuoso and effective technique,no intension of offending someone, but this sounds a little like a drug n alcohol week with a midi controller and a host sequencer.
@andrewdrummer That's exactly what it is, acquired. Music is what it is and all it can do is to be the exact interpretation it was intended to be. If it's meaning is lost to a listener's inability to feel it it still hasn't lost anything.
Just because an infected lung can't breathe doesn't negate the purpose of oxygen.
Music is written from the standpoint of the creator not the listener and
vise versa. It resonates or it doesn't. Not liking it doesn't make you wrong.
worldcitizenforever - there is no best drummer. There are good and there are bad drummers, terry and ringo are both good drummers for there genre. no questions asked, end of discussion. you have a good one, mate!
Wow - the BLACK page. Yeah, man. it is so, like....hard. You know what's hard? Try playing try playing the bass drum part from Stravinsky's Rite Of Spring. Then tell us about hard.
i knew bozzio could play some music without that exaggerated kit.

@KingSethos There is a percussionist in the band. This member often plays a number of instruments including bells, chimes, concert snare rolls, even duck noises.
He was used to fill in backing rhythms or effects back when we did not have samplers or loop tracks.
But that said Bozzio is a fuckin beast.

Just for people who can't believe it's in 4/4, just tap the tempo he taps on the hi hat around 0:16 with your foot, it'll feel odd at times but you'll notice it returns to a 4/4 feel later in the song and many of the bass + cymbal hit accents land on 1 of various bars :>
ryder187mac 1 year ago
The Black Page was written specifically for Terry Bozzio- Zappa wrote it, put it in front if TB at a rehearsal and said "Play that Bozzio!"-- Terry took it home and learned it in a few days-- he said that he took it bar by bar and it took him a few practice sessions to get it-- the rest is history!!!!
The whole piece is in 4/4, and as stated in some if these posts, it's the odd rhythmic groupings that make it sound so "not" in 4/4-
davelewitt 1 year ago
that was definately great.

can someone tell me why black page is considered drummer's nightmares???
cchhiittoo 1 year ago
@cchhiittoo 1) For starters, it's in a simple meter but the polyrhythms are all across the map. You have to simultaneously keep rock-steady time and play five-rhythms, seven-rhythms, all at once.
2) It's all written out in full. The thing about FZ's music is there is very little left for the performer to add. Aside from choosing exactly which tom or cymbal to use, Terry is doing EXACTLY to the note what FZ indicated. There is no chance.
Qermaq 1 year ago
@Qermaq thank you for the anwer!!
cchhiittoo 1 year ago
@cchhiittoo It's the sheer statistical density of the piece. It's called "The Black Page" because of the amount notes on the manuscript. Time must be kept while playing numerous patterns and rudimentation. Classical percussionists are able to perform this piece in ensemble but to ask a drummer to do it on a kit is a tall order, and regardless of what you read in the comments on You Tube, there are few kit drummers that can approach it. It's a bitch to learn and perform.

Marco minneman would be an amazing drummer for zappa because his timing is phenominal and he has an awesome style.

The rev was playing this at the age of 10.
If you dont know who he is, he was the drummer for Avenged Sevenfold before he passed away in 2009.
He won best drummer of the year that year ahead of every single drummer in the world. =)
SuperQuickscoper 1 year ago
@SuperQuickscoper Terry Bozzio is a musician. The "Rev" was a waste of breath and the world is better for him rotting in the ground. Get out.
godlovesninjas 1 year ago
@godlovesninjas whoa a little harsh, hate his idiot fans, he wasn't that terrible of a drummer, and thats pretty disrespectful to a dead person it's sad that he is dead. I see your point, but with a little more humanism behind it.
arobdrummer 1 year ago 2
@SuperQuickscoper Sorry man the rev was one of my main influences when i started drumming because he had an EPIC style which was easily notifiable as his own but compared to these guys he was pritty average.
RIP Rev.
guitardeathcoredrums 1 year ago
@SuperQuickscoper Get the fuck out of here. Ahead of every single drummer in the world, because he won a "best drummer of the year contest?" Not to disrespect the dead, but seriously. There are MANY more drummers who are (and I say this from playing style) better than Rev. Im not saying the Rev couldnt play, but I can name many drummers that deserve "the best drummer in the world" title for a year over the Rev.
ilikehockey13 1 year ago
@SuperQuickscoper You're comparing the Rev to Terry Bozzio!?!? Shut the fuck up!!!! ROFLMAO You don't even understand how stupid you just made yourself look!!!! LMAO Wow talk about ignorance!!!! Mike Portnoy is going to be a blessing to that band.... That's what mainstream music does to you, it get you caught up in a world of ignorance.

crazyedd123 1 year ago
Anyone who says Bozzio sucks is not a musician and never has been a musician. He is playing multiple notes in time with the other musicians--do you know how hard that is? He's not off on his own doing a bullshit drum solo where timing doesn't matter. If he was off in the slightest, it would show and suck. And to be doing it at his age, Jesus, Mary and Joseph! You may not like his style, but the skill level is obvious to a real musician.

I guess this is like an acquired taste of music cause I can't feel like a good vibration at all :S, I prefer totally the classic technique of buddy rich, or the contemporary technique of thomas lang or tony royster jr., it's more like a virtuoso and effective technique,no intension of offending someone, but this sounds a little like a drug n alcohol week with a midi controller and a host sequencer.
andrewdrummer 1 year ago
@andrewdrummer That's exactly what it is, acquired. Music is what it is and all it can do is to be the exact interpretation it was intended to be. If it's meaning is lost to a listener's inability to feel it it still hasn't lost anything.
Just because an infected lung can't breathe doesn't negate the purpose of oxygen.
Music is written from the standpoint of the creator not the listener and
vise versa. It resonates or it doesn't. Not liking it doesn't make you wrong.
Peace
